On Combo Records of Santa Monica Boulevard is Motorhead Baby by Chuck Higgins and his Mellotones, the flip to Pachuko Hop. Back in ’52, this was splittin’ the ether, blasting out of the border stations and on up the Pacific Coast. Chuck is blowin’ the horn. The shouter is one John Jacob Watson Jnr., 17 years old at the time, and still a few licks away from becoming Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson. Followers of Frank Vincent Zappa will be aware of the influence of this song and these two musicians on the Mothers.

My mid-fifties Philips radiogram and my 1960 Pye G63 stereogram.
Pure muscle.

Wonderful! Seeing that turntable and arm/cartridge reminded me of the Philips radiogram my parents had in the 1950's and mid '60s. Yes, it too had that 'twist-action' cartridge head, able to play 78s (N) as well as 'micro-groove' records at 33 1/3 rpm (M).

My first introduction to records! Happy memories.

If I was a singles collector, that one would be on my list of must have records along with Danny and the Memories - 'Can't Help Loving That Girl of Mine'

Ah yes - Danny and the Memories - the beginnings of Crazy Horse.

I'm glad it stirred good memories Barry. I'm just tuning it in to The Organist Entertains now. A programme that always sounds good through its dusty valves and single paper cone.
