I just heard a version of Route 66 on the radio in the car and I liked the voice on it. Male singer. Then I thought "I recognise that voice". "Yes, it sounds like Peter Cox from Go West but not his type of music" I thought.

Then it finished and the presenter said "that was John Mayer and Route 66". I've got a couple of John Mayer cd's and I recall thinking at the time I got them that he sounded remarkable like Peter Cox, who has a great pop/soul voice by the way.

Anyway, just thought I'd share that and start a new thread where you could perhaps discuss something you've just heard......

...doesn't the 'what are you listening to right now' thread cover that ? :)

Yeah, you're probably right, but I thought this could be more of a "I just heard" rather than "I just listened to" kinda thing. There's a difference imo.

I 'spose it only applies if you're listening to the radio, or out in a restaurant or store or something. Nevermind.

I agree with you Lee - a great idea for a thread - i.e. a piece of new music you hear unaware what it is (could be TV, film, as well) but grabs your attention.

This is how I discovered The Bees - I was in HMV and there was this amazing chillout album playing - so of course I asked at the checkout what it was, and duly left with Sunshine Hit Me in my grubby little mitts, and couldn't wait to play it. Now, don't get me wrong - this album is great (and I've subsequently bought all their releases) but I'm damned sure it wasn't what was playing in the shop!

I think you are right there Alex, I love The Bees, but I wouldn't describe them as chill-out

A few years ago, when I was working in Manchester, my walk through town to the station took me past Decoy Records - a small independent record shop that specialised in jazz, blues and folk (sadly no longer in business). Pretty much every time I went in to buy a specific album, I'd walk out with something else as well on the strength of what was playing in the shop at the time.

I've bought my fair share of stuff from them too - it's a shame that they've gone.
The staff there had encyclopaedic knowledge about the artists and recordings/labels too. :(

OK, Acoustic Alchemy, Natural Elements. The original theme tune to 'Gardeners World'. I just love their music and was completely devastated when Nick Webb died. I recently also had a conversation with Tristran, their original drummer. It's such a small World.

I heard a tune on Gilles petersons show the other night that made my ears prick up but it took me a few nights to work out what it was. I caught his name as subtract but found out it was spelled SBTRKT so a little confusion. He remixes other peoples stuff but has his own album just out this week which i managed to get on vinyl at FOPP tonight. Turned out to be one of my better buys.

I heard a lovely song at the end of an episode of Hawaii 5-0 I think it was. Not listed in the credits and the only thing I could gather was that it might be called Leave to See.

Googled it, and found out it's Leave to See by Trent Dabbs from an album called Southerner. Nice stuff.

BTW, don't you just hate it when you hear a piece of music on a tv show, or an advert with no clue as to what it is? Like when you hear a song on the radio and you stay in the car waiting for the presenter to name the artist and song. Then the track ends and they say nothing!

Don't forget Shazzam, MusicID or similar apps for iphone/smart phones, which do a brilliant job IME.
