You know it allways makes me laugh, when people write the ''c word'' or c**t because no matter how you describe it you allways say the word in your head,so what's the difference

when the wam re-opens, hopefully quite soon, will it be an over 18's this time round?

Even way back, though, some folks with chips on their shoulders and a deliberate 'message' they wanted to get across got short shrift on the Wigwam. ... no names need be mentioned ... . And quite right too, imo. They were a pain in the arse just looking to make trouble.

Jerry, is that absolutely necessary? We all know whom you're referring to. Repeating past history certainly doesn't help matters; nor indeed does it have any relevance to the current situation on Wigwam.

Therefore, in the interests of maintaining harmony on this thread, I'd be obliged if you removed those remarks - cheers!

Tom, your reply to Jerry has been removed, as it was simply inflaming the situation.

Richard, your last post has also been removed for the same reason. When you report a post, kindly allow us to deal with the situation (as I have just done) without fighting back yourself. Remember what we agreed!

Hi Alfie,

I don't believe I have been protesting to much at all! I just seemed to be a single member fighting from the opposite corner! Perhaps if anything, I was protesting to well....

Lol... It's got nothing to do with that, dude.

What I was referring to was your overuse of exclamation marks (count how many were used in your main post earlier I was referring to), which made it look like you were shouting and losing your rag, and that what you were writing was more of a rant, than you calmly, but robustly, expressing your legitimate opinion.

Therefore, you may wish to use less exclamation marks when making your point in future!!!!!!!!!!!! (note the deliberate overuse of those bad boys) ;)

As to the TOLERANCE AND RESPECT bit I guess what will be will be! There is to be some changes I believe on the Wam, but after seeing who some of the newly appointed Mods are I expect very little change towards the ethos as it is now! IMO that is a good thing, as it's what makes the Wam different to here & I like the choice!

Fair enough, but Sodders appointed as a mod? Good grief!

That's akin to appointing Colonel Gaddafi as an ambassador for peace in the Middle East!! ;)

And let's not forget that this is the chap too who, completely unprovoked, recently referred to AoS members as "halfwits" (or was it "quarter-wits"?) - hilarious as it was at the time!

Oh dear Frank, I can see the C**t word being just as a big a part of the Wam as ever, now Sodders is one of the new Mods. It's only a word though & was freely used in victorian times, It's a modern repulsion some have against it.

Are you married, Alfie, or do you have a female partner? If so, I'd be curious to know her views on the justifiable use of the word 'cunt' in everyday dialogue.....

I hope there is a change to how new members are treated & I think some of the new mods will help in this way, but I fear the new members will want to see what's in the private section & there the Wam will be the Wam!

Yes indeed, but here's the million Dollar question.........

Why can't the Wam forum have the same ethos and vibe as does the Scalford Hall 'Pie Show', where everyone, no matter their views on hi-fi, is welcomed with open arms and meets up and has a good time, in the true spirit of camaraderie, without hardly a bad word being exchanged??

Why is the vibe on the forum so very different, certainly at least to those who don't share the natives desire to indulge in pubescent and offensive, sorry, 'humorous', behaviour?

I'd like you to give some serious consideration to the glaring dichotomy that exists, as I've outlined above - why that is so, and most importantly, what can be done about it.

I am genuinely interested in helping Wigwam become a friendlier place, as I do think that it has something important, and clearly popular, to offer to the UK audio community :)

Ah the famous Sodders (aka Earl of Sodbury). I have fond  memories of him. I posted about on line sales and how ebay was cornering a big share of the market (posted over four years ago), to be attacked as is ritual with new members posting about something of real interest. It morphed into the *new* industry as I see it including me recommending forums organising Bake-Off Shows  to be subject to the ritual on-line gang rape. After a few posts Sodders appears saying "sorry I am late joining in this thread dealing with this idiot (or words to that effect) as I was over the local golf course shagging a middle aged lorry driver", well all the gang fell about laughing thinking it was hilarious. Where I was just scratching my head and was convinced for about two years he really was gay along with half the rest of them as they talk about it so much. I also remember thinking Bake-Off's were gay events as well as audio events due to all the homosexual banter about staying the night. BUT now I am given to understand it is all part of the humour.

How many other people take them seriously, and also what part of the forum are we supposed to take seriously.

Richard,

I think that's the problem with 'in jokes' on forums, which only the regulars will appreciate and relate to.

It's the same here with me when I refer to 'shlipping into a wee frock', or whatever - I'm not REALLY doing it (well, at least only on a Sunday :eyebrows:) - it is simply something I enjoy laughing at with those who I know also find it funny!

That aside, I do understand where you're coming from, but can we please concentrate less on past events on Wigwam involving you, and more on the present situation, and how we can help matters.

For instance, what's your view on the question I asked Alfie? Why is Wigwam, the forum, so different in its outlook and vibe from Wigwam in its bake-off format, such as at Scalford Hall?

Yeah, I'm one of those nice placid types, too! :eyebrows:

Yup - capital letters denote shouting (and aggression) on 'message boards', as does the excessive use of exclamation marks. The trick is to use them sparingly, when you really want to emphasise something!!!! (Just like that).

Anyway could you please explain how to split quotes to answer each section separately it makes more sense that way

Just simply ensure that the text you wish to quote is enclosed within ["quote"]["/quote"], minus the actual quotation marks - simples!

I'm very thick-skinned (you get that way in my business), so I've always taken the HFWW "style" with a hefty dose of salt. There are some very knowledgeable people on there, and I've gained useful intel. I avoid the typical objectivist/subjectivist "cable wars" conversations there because, frankly, you're never going to change entrenched opinions so why bother? I've met some great folk from the site when buying/selling, and at Scalford: I'm happy to see it continue. I can't be arsed worrying about the keyboard warriors - that's just a trait of (most) forums. I refuse to take them too seriously - it's only hifi 'n' stuff.

I like pfm and this place too, and indeed, quite a few on here are happy to spend time in the other forums too. What I like most is that each of the three have very individual characteristics; they can all be good fun in different ways - and I've met a lot a positively charming people in the process.

Marco

Good post, Theo! :)

Just to pick up on something Tony L has written on the concurrent thread on pfm:

I don't think it's at all appropriate for us to dissect matters on WigWam here, I've found some of the content elsewhere on the web decidedly tacky to be honest, and I'd certainly like to keep pfm far above that level. As far as I'm concerned some of pfm's friends (most of whom are members here anyway) hit a rocky patch and we did what we could to help them though it.

That's exactly how I see it too, and we've certainly done what we could to help, by having provided a contact point for exiled Wammers (just as pfm did), whilst the PM facility on Wigwam was inaccessible, when James temporarily pulled the plug.

I'm not sure if Tony is referring to comments here or not, regarding his "tacky" remark....

However, I don't see any harm in identifying potential areas of concern on Wigwam, and offering constructive and well-intended advice on how perhaps to solve problems, with the view of preventing them happening again in future.

I don't believe in unnecessary censorship, so people should be free to express themselves and discuss things, providing that in doing so, their motive complies with the sentiments expressed above.

Aside from a few inflammatory remarks, which I've removed, that is certainly what's been happening here :)

Marco.

Because Chestergroup picked up the idea from my posts and emailed the main forum owners to see if they wanted to be involved, only Wigwam were interested. But Chestergroup knowing perfectly well what that forum was like laid down a set of rules. Because of that I came in as trade to sponsor it 2nd year because Chestergroup were going to pull out if trade didn't get involved (the only one apart from records and accessories in the hall) because I felt responsible having run the idea in the first place. So *under instruction* everyone played the game in a professional manner, this seems to have rubbed off on the event. If they had thought up the idea and organised it themselves from the start can you imagine what a dissing fest it would have turned into. It may be called the Wam Show now but the Chestergroup influence from the first two is still there. We will see how long it lasts.

Marco

Interesting answer, Richard. I suspect that there is an element of truth in that, although I think you're being rather unfair on the effort James and the Wigwam mods and members have put into making this year's show such a success.

If things were genuinely as bad as you say, I'd have seen evidence of this myself when I was at Scalford Hall in March. However, nothing could be further from the truth - the vibe was fantastic, and as friendly as a very friendly thing, so kudos where kudos is due!

Personally, I think it's more to do with certain regulars using the forum as their own personal playground and therapy centre, rather than for its intended purpose, because they can get away with such bravado behind a keyboard, yet acting as normal human beings (their true selves) in 'real life'.

If they could act the same way towards each other on the forum, as they do at Scalford Hall, then 90% of the challenges currently facing Wigwam would be wiped out in an instant.

As you said ...

Thank goodness you weren't referring to what I wrote!

I do agree, hence why I said what I did. However, he's entitled to his opinion, however much you may disagree with it.

Having said that though, this is starting to get a little out of control, and become more about current personalities here and airing old grudges, as opposed to the subject that should be under discussion, therefore I'm afraid that I will have to ask that we now get back on-topic, otherwise any further remarks like that will be deleted from this post onwards.

Sodders is a very intelligent character, very well read & has written some of the most eloquent & some of the most disturbing posts I've ever read! (note 1 exclamation mark). Again he's a very nice guy in real life, still strongly opinionated though. I think he will make a great Mod, in the spirit of the Wam, but his vocabulary I suspect will be very colourful.

EDIT: Seems I jumped the gun & Sodders is not doing a moderating role, still, I think in a way he would be very good! IMO.

Are you married, Alfie, or do you have a female partner? If so, I'd be curious to know her views on the justifiable use of the word 'cunt' in everyday dialogue.....

No, I'm not married, as an atheist I don't believe in marriage. I do though share my life with a very special & beautiful lady called Sally. I have 3 children from a previous relationship & am also step father to Sallys 2 children. Sally works very hard & has worked her way to the top of her chosen profession & now manages several large concerns. We both do not swear around the younger children. I thought I'd ask her her thoughts on the matter & she asked to read some of the thread. Her reply is you're a bunch of "sanctimonious, self righteous cunts" so that's your answer there! She also asked me if any of you had heard of the feminist 'cunt art' movement & suggested you read these sites & others similar
http://marcysheiner.tripod.com/DinnerParty.htm
http://www.matthewhunt.com/cunt/reappropriation.html
I also asked if she thought it ok to use on an HiFi forum, she replied it depends on context & the acceptance of the forum.

My Ex the mother of my children claimed not to like the word, but used it greatly while we were having sex though.

I am genuinely interested in helping Wigwam become a friendlier place, as I do think that it has something important, and clearly popular, to offer to the UK audio community :)

Marco.

I suggest that most Wammers are normal polite human beings that know how to behave publicly! As seen at Scalford or at bake-offs, but some choose to use profanity in the guidelines of the forum in question! where they feel safe & happy to do so. It is simply their choice & it does not change the people they are in my eye's. They are only words & words to be used! Just perhaps they are entitled to TOLERANCE AND RESPECT too, in that some tolerance should be shown to the language they choose to use & respect of their choice to use it.

I don't believe anything needs to be done about it! It is the choice of the forum AUP & the membership. I suspect the new AUP & mods will try harder to keep the swearing in the Pubilic bar, car park & members area, but we will have to wait & see.

The wam already is a friendly place it just has a different outlook & way of running than AoS or different again PFM. The Wam as far as I can tell doesn't want to be another HiFi forum, It wants to be the Wam & i'm not sure you can change it to use your personal set of morals. I think alot of its attraction is the freedom of speech & the way it's run, that isn't for everybody but then again it's not a democracy is it!

Has as been mentioned through this thread each forum has a different appeal & that's a good thing IMO, people simply choose where they spend their time! No wrongs & no rights just personal choice!

Are you married, Alfie, or do you have a female partner? If so, I'd be curious to know her views on the justifiable use of the word 'cunt' in everyday dialogue.....

Not really relevent to the demise or otherwise of HFWW, but in answer to your question - my former wife (who was a bit of a feminist) was quite happy to use the word as a simple, albeit coarse, word for that part of her anatomy. Used strictly within that context I have no problems. It is of course the use of the word as a term of abuse that is totally unjustified. Deeply, deeply offensive when applied to women; illogical when applied to men.

So, yes I agree it has no place on an open forum, but I would like to say that I find the supposed censorship of other expletives rediculous. No amount of dyslexia or letter substitution will dilute the impact of these words. We are all adults here and know perfectly well what is being written. To those who feel they want to use these words - don't compound your sins of ignorance or insult with one of cowardice: tell it like it is, or don't say it at all!

I have to confess I have actually exposed the gentle readership of AoS to an unexpergated exposure of the word in question: when I quoted the lyrics of a certain song. I don't believe in censorship, but I don't do these things without thought. With the song in question, the use of the word was ambigious, but pertinent.

I don't expect, or indeed hope, that AoS will become flooded with obscenities or profanities. But if we have to have a "If under the age of 18, proceed no further" type rubric on the forum, then perhaps we have gone too far and have become too PC.

Regards

Marco

Indeed, Barry, and that is precisely what I was getting at.

I have no problem with its use in the context you are referring to, although the females I've known, past and present, would be more likely to refer to that part of their anatomy as simply a 'fanny', as they'd feel that 'cunt' has overtones which are demeaning and rather too offensive for use in any context.

YMMV :)

Perhaps so, I don't know, as I wasn't party to the events you're referring to. However, despite that, Richard, you quite clearly have a grudge towards Wigwam, it's members and its management team, and that quite simply cannot be allowed to raise its head here.

Marco.

I have said this many times in the past when these accusations have come up and it seems people just have agendas to ignore it, so I will repeat again. I love the idea of the Bake-Off Show, how can I not when I originally proposed it. I admire Chestergroup for taking the financial risk for two years in running it and in the end just about broke even - BUT they would not have broken with out my £500 sponsorship in the 2nd year (which deserves at least four exclamation marks)!!!! Would I seriously have done this if I didn't want the event to survive?

I admire James for agreeing to get involved when other forums, notably PFM turned their noses up to it. The first year was a rollicking success though I didn't go. 2nd year Chestergroup were umming and ahhing about it as they lost money 1st year so invited trade, I was the only one to agree and sign up to it, but Chestergroup did it anyway, but decided because the trade weren't interested that they were pulling out of the 3rd year. I seemed to know about this long before anyone at Wigwam was willing to admit to it, as I chat sometimes about the industry to Justin. So I said in my forum that Wigwam had to get their finger out and organise it themselves or it would die as Chestergroup were pulling out. I even offered to continue sponsorship if it was needed.

So this year has been a success, well brilliant I am very pleased, as the concept continues. I congratulate Wigwam and its organisers that after all the faff it was worthwhile. And I hope it continues for many years, and it should if they continue the same way.

My final point is that Scalford is not and will not be unique, they do not own the rights to user shows, nobody does. As far as I am concerned the more the merrier and the more different areas covered the better, and if anyone organising one in the future wishes me to sponsor it they only have to ask and put in a business plan and have at least one major forum behind them to support it.

That is my position now and has been since the idea first came up nearly 5 years ago.

I spent a little time reading this http://www.matthewhunt.com/cunt/reappropriation.html that Sally pointed out to me! Not just the Reappropriation page but all the pages. It's very interesting stuff!

Be careful with my Ex as I've mentioned somewhere before, on splitting up she took great pleasure in trashing my HiFi & smashing & selling the vast majority of my record collection! Oh how I wished she had just cut one arm off my suits!.. A woman scorned & all that....

Now if the members of WW want to bombard each other with fruity colourful language it doesn't bother me from now on, because I can rest in the knowledge that Marco and the mods are not going to let this forum be like that.

As for the bullying and humiliating, I can rest easy that will also be under control too on this forum, so they can do what they like on WW.

Nobody yet has mentioned why the WW is being cited for libel from more than one quarter I am led to believe and as for Google's "inappropriate content" threat to withdraw, the mind boggles what that could be, given the track record of the wammers. Maybe somebody in the industry has finally taken offence at their product being constantly unjustifiably labelled as "shit" and a dozen other less than complimentary remarks which is all too common on the forum.

I did actually (half heartedly I might add) tell James once that if certain individuals didn't desist from targeting me with their vitriol, then a summons would be in the post citing him as being responsible. It really did shake him for a moment I think, but I did send him a PM a short while later saying it was a warning bell ringing rather than hauling his arse into court. He did take the miscreants to task and it did stop, so he can do it.

Forget the language, forget the bullying, because they generally only affect private individuals, so methinks it could be an external threat in the future that WW needs to watch out for. We could of course speculate from here to eternity what that might be, but that is one scenario that cannot be ruled out either.

YMMV :)

Marco.

We could have a thread for alternative words to describe a ladies nether regions. My favourite is 'Growler'.:)

No, I'm not married, as an atheist I don't believe in marriage.

Hi Alfie, this has me scratching my head

I should explain: I'm an atheist too, but I've been married twice.

You are right to  Martin. As a marriage is civil. Perhaps I should take more care to explain things, but it wasn't really integeral to what I was trying to say. I probably added to much of my personal life to that post anyway

Indeed, Frank, and it's something I'll be tackling later in my response to Alfie.

The fact is, the 'boisterous' behaviour (let's be polite and call it that) by the 'natives' on Wigwam are obviously causing a MAJOR problem for James, both in terms of threats of litigation, and the personal stress he's been under, so quite frankly I'm appalled at the selfishness shown by some of their members, and their attitude of 'The Wam will be the Wam'.

Who exactly is paying for them to have that privilege? And I'm not talking about just in monetary terms! Well, IMO, if The Wam continues to be the Wam, sooner rather than later, there will be no Wam!! What then??

I think more consideration is needed into sympathising with why James felt so perturbed by the situation that he had to CLOSE the forum in order to escape from dealing with all the crap.

If people genuinely care about Wigwam (and James), then that situation CANNOT be allowed to happen again, and so something RADICAL must be done now to ensure that is the case.

It's a classic situation of putting your own selfish needs before the genuine best interests of the forum, and the guy who has the headaches and puts his neck on the block, to provide the community that they seemingly can't live without.

Well WW is now fully open and a new AUP will be in force shortly. In full the changes to the AUP are

There will be a new AUP in force by the end of the week.

in short, it will say:

If you libel anyone it's on your head and you agree to indemnify the forum against any damages arising.

If you libel or slander anyone on the forums you will have your posts deleted and your posting rights removed for a period of 24hrs, if you do it twice, you will not be welcome back.

If you want access to the sweary, more WIGWAMMY old school Pub Car park and otehr soon to be hidden areas you will have to prove a few things:
1. That you are not a whiny thin skinned litigious prick.

So no change at all really, the pack are still free to roam and kill at will. To be honest I had hoped for a bit more.

I don't usually have the opportunity or access to comment on many threads early on, but a couple of things occur to me -

Someone I know coaches a kids' football team who play in a county league every weekend. He spends ages coordinating the parents and kids, running training sessions, engaging with the league and turning up in all weathers in strange places every Sunday for the matches. In return he seems to get grief from the parents of his team over everything he does (eg decisions on selection, playing position, tactics, travel arrangements) and from the opposing team and their entourage. He does it for the love of it and it's a good thing that people like him do.

Secondly, it's only rock 'n' roll, as I think someone may once have said.

Off topic, but as I understand it, when you call someone a berk, it is actually short for some cockney rhyming slang; the full phrase being Berkshire Hunt.

Marco, can you do us all a great bit favour and slap a padlock on this one, or better still shred the entire wretched thing?

Mmmm... I appreciate where you're coming from, Frank, but a padlock is unnecessary at this stage, and something we're loathe to use, unless under exceptional circumstances.

On second thoughts, Alfie, no offence, but I think that enough has been said, so dude, let's leave it there :)

There's no need to lock the thread, though (I hate locking threads), so let's just let it die a natural death, and end things on a positive note, by reading the words of gratitude being extended to AoS (and pfm) by Wammers:

http://www.hifiwigwam.com/showthread.php?57170-Pfm

No worries, guys. It's important that all the UK audio forums always try to help each other. We wish Wigwam and its members all the best, and hope that the future of your community is a bright one!

Play nice(ish), you cnuts (typo intended), and try and give James a quiet life!! :eyebrows:

Anyway, see all yooz daftees next year at Scalford!

As a neutral observer the words Toys and Pram come to mind. In my view never was a possibility of Wam closing. Reading the new AUP and list of moderators I note this is followed by the announcement that the Forum is being registered as a Limited Company. Smacks of a commercial money making exercise rather than a hobby/service on the part of the owner. Lets put it this way he had no real intention of letting go of this baby. Also posted earlier of owning 'rights' to the Scalford show. Hardly lines up with the idea of a co-operative of hi-fi enthusiasts coming together.

Or just an excuse for folk with too much time on their hands to continually "Bitch slap" each other?:ner:

A word in support of James for a change.

The limited liability is just that - to limit his liability to the capital of the company, which can be kept at virtually nil. So they cannot go for his personal assets like his house.

But the forum can be closed by a successful libel case, and it depends on if he is culpable personally in the libel as he could still be sued as an individual, he should avoid naming anyone as the responsible publisher in the forum as they can be gone for individually as well, Ltd company or not.

Also with no win no fee lawyers constantly punting for business, running a forum is a risky business. But it should always be remembered the publisher of a libel (forum owner and interestingly responsible mods) is only liable after the fact i.e. the individual who made the post in the first place.

Thanks for your comment Richard. It did occur to me after making the post that this may have something to do with the libel threat. Would have made more sense to do this earlier or on setting up the forum. I just think forums would be better set up as a club or possibly a charity for those suffering from Hi-Fi obsessive behavior. :lolsign:

Hi Pete,

Thanks for bringing that to our attention. However, I don't think that hosting a running commentary on what's happening on Wigwam, now that the site has reopened, is something that is liable to be of benefit to AoS, so please, let's just leave the guys on Wigwam now to get on with it :)

Yep, it was a big mistake giving infant schools pc's and internet access.

Just before it fully re-opened, they opened up the classifieds and asked for wammers. It stated if you didn't like the wam you could *'@! off! Says it all really. How to turn an interesting place of discussion, debate and solidarity into a juvenille playground. I've given up with forums, too many heroes and wanna be's who couldn't cut it in the real world.
