Don't know if I'm allowed to post this, but this was posted by "aa a" on the yahoo Quad thread. looks like "trade attitude" is alive and kicking in the US as well as it was here in the past..
"Spent all afternoon at the show, thought a follow-up report would be of interest. Took my 'demo' CDs to the show. Imagine my surprise when a number of exhibitors refused to play them!
The room with the small TADs was not playing any music when I entered. I asked when the staff when they would begin a demo, was ignored. I noticed some staff were fiddling with a belt/idler drive t'table, so I walked over and enquired if they could play some of my CDs, got a gruff "we don't play Cds" response and left. I don't know how they expect visitors to judge speakers without listening to familiar material. Utterly unprofessional. No comments on the TADs' sound.
Steinway-Lyngdorf were next to the Linkwitz room. The system on demo comprised small two-way passive satellites, two woofers cabinets each with 2 x 25cm drivers, and a stack of electronics comprising power amps and controller. Imagine my surprise when a request to put on my CDs was refused point blank. Lyngdorf's underling, I wish I had recorded his name, made a remark to the effect that earlier in the day someone had brought in music that was not good. I did ask what that had to do with my request, but did not get a response. At this point it was clear that further back and forth banter with said underling was not worth the bother and let Lyngdorf do his demo. First track was a drum kit played at deafening levels, I requested that the level be lowered, request was refused. At the end of this passage the underling looked at me and says this is how a live drum kit sounds. Of course it doesn't, but it was pointless to argue.At the end of the demo I asked Lyngdorf a few questions about the system, asked again if he would mind playing my CDs and left after my request was denied.
Towards the end of the show I ran into an acquaintance whom I had not seen in several years. He told me that when he and his friends came out of the Linkwitz room, Lyngdorf's underling came out of the demo room and asked them to move away as they were making too much noise! I wonder who Lyngdorf's target market is?
Went to the Orion demo again, my earlier impressions were confirmed, this speaker is indeed the real deal, the best sound I heard at the show. In my last report I called it a very fine speaker, perhaps outstanding speaker would be a better description.
In the past, MBL speakers have always caught my attention. This time around I was not happy with the sound, they sounded thin and the treble stood out. Room, setup, whatever it was they have sounded better in the past.
Listened to the small Joseph Audio 2-ways in two different rooms and liked what I heard. However, the Josephs are $ 7k, perhaps not the best value for money.
Also heard the Meridians, Revels and KEFs. Alas, the demos were sub-par, so no comments on the sound. The Meridian DSP speakers sure can play loud.
At the end of the show Chesky were clearing out their remaining stocks of CD/SACD/DVDs at $10 apeice. I bought a few.
That's about it. It was a surprisingly small show and attendance was not particularly heavy.
