Windows 7 Tips and tricks

I like Windows 7 and keep finding useful ways to use it.

If you find something useful in Windows 7 that might be interesting post it.

1. Sticky notes

These are like traditional 'post it' notes but on your computer screen rather than bits of yellow paper stuck all over the place :)

To find Windows Sticky notes, click the windows 'start' logo at the bottom left and in the search box type 'Sticky' , at the top of the list ' Sticky Notes ' should appear, click it and away you go.

Sticky notes are saved when you switch off your PC, you dont lose them.

When you have notes on your screen there is a sticky note logo in the bar at the bottom of the screen, click this to toggle the notes from 'displayed' to 'hidden'

i particularly like the snipping tool Mark, it allows you to to cut out anything, an image, text whatever from what's on your screen and then save it as a .jpg file , very handy.

One of the things I find really useful is Windows 7 'God Mode' which creates a shortcut to all the Windows configuration tools - brilliant.


Windows 7 users are all abuzz about the OS and its GodMode. If you haven't heard of it, GodMode is a feature that was revealed by CNet's Microsoft Correspondent, Ina Fried. GodMode is a folder that brings together a long list of customization settings allowing you to change all your settings from one place. Neat huh? It's very easy to enable and damn useful if you tweak things around a lot.

It's easy to make a Task Bar icon for a favourite website. Go to the website as usual in IE. Then grab the tab and drag it to your Task Bar - et voila, an instant pinned link to that website.

(Faster Start Times) In login,I hate the log in so if you don't want it, go to main user accounts,click change password,enter your old password then under new password leave it blank and reboot, vallah no more login.

Go to the start menu and type into the little box msconfig then click on msconfig when it appears, then go to the start up and uncheck everything but your security software and your OPS and boom your start up will scream,then go to the boot tab and change the time out to 03 seconds.

My win 7 32bit is fully functional with in 43 seconds of pressing the power button on a slow 4 year old laptop.

In Internet Explorer, go to Manage add-ons and turn off everything you don't need (but leave Shockwave Flash Object if you want Flash) and your browsing will be much faster.

I like that if you havea few windows open and you want to just see one grab it it on the top bar and shake the mouse and everything else goes down to the task bar and if you want them back do it again !

Also, hover the mouse in the lower-right corner and everything goes transparent.

I've just had to adopt Windows 7 for work and I don't really like it so far, mainly due to the PITA of learning where everything's gone. It seems like it's intuitive but on a different wavelength to me :lol:

Text and icons are too small and can't be changed, blah, blah, blah - Oh, just get on with it Steve :doh:

It's so simple finding things compared to XP etc, there is a search box, bottom left :)

For example type ' network' in the search box and it will show you where the various network settings are.

type ' printer' in the search box and you see all the printer setting locations etc

It's so easy to use :)

No need for Start>Control panel>System> and all that old fashioned stuff in XP

Useful tip :) Search for 'Text Size' to find where to change the text size :eyebrows:
