Borrowed this CD from my local library yesterday:

This was done on the Water Lily label, which prides itself for offering unprocessed sound for the discriminating listeners.

I was pleasantly surprised that the performances were not too quiet sounding (usually, these esoteric 'audiophile' recordings tend to be ridiculously quiet). Secondly, was pleasantly surprised by the sweetness of Dr. Subramaniam's violin sound. His violin on this recording sounds incredibly liquid, without even a hint of harshness or piercing transients.

But Larry's guitar(s) are another story -- his acoustic guitars sound very muffled, blurry, unexciting. Why is that? Where is the pretty much unavoidable sparkle that every quality acoustic guitar brings to the performance?

It's almost as if the guitar was post-processed in order to get tamed (even though the linear notes claim that no post-processing was applied to the faithfully captured live performances). Or, Larry chose to play guitars with well worn, almost dead strings?
