I demo'd one against my new REGA dac at the weekend.
It was very good on USB from my MacBook but to my ears was nowhere near as good on spdif from my CD XT se or Wadia 170i so I returned it.
Steve
thats interesting!
the rega is on my shortlist.
or should i say "long"list.
trouble is , ya cant try them all at the same time.

You can. Buy one that's refundable and ask Keith @ Purite Audio for a loaner :¬) That's exactly what I'm doing! Should have the Young tomorrow.

Don't give up on the HD800 just yet. I have been perfecting a digital headphone amp circuit for my own collection of headphones, including the HD800, for some time now and the prototype regularly brings some uncontrollable big grins to my face from time to time. Hopefully I can have it on the market in the autumn.

Sorry oldson, I've only just seen this. I find them very aggressive to the point where they are uncomfortable to my ears at anything but very low volumes. The GS UL, with the PSU-1 power supply, doesn't seem to help matters as I've had better results using a Logic 3 valve hybrid with the phones connected directly to the speaker outputs. I also found that a pair of chord chameleon interconnects were especially bad with the GS while a pair of blue angels sounded better.
Stan has offered to let me listen to his new DAC which may well be a solution. Should know some time next week.
Regards
Colin

So how are the demo's going?
I'll write a report soon, not got the time atm! In short, the NuForce HDP is simply amazing value for money.

Interesting. I'll certainly dig deeper into this amp this weekend. I never heard of it before.
I am curious how it performs compared to the Caiman/Gator.

They look great, and sound phenomenal :¬)
£750 from HiFiSound.co.uk (special offer, usually £799).
They have just released updated drivers (known as Revision 2) which add treble clarity/accuracy (not frequency) and a larger soundstage.
Simon (HiFiSound) has a loan program for them too, so you can try before you buy, you just pay for the delivery. Worth a pop if you have some spare cash and are a serious headphone listener.

now you have started something!
my mrs may be after you now;)
i have owned 2 open cans in the past. hd600 and ATh-ad2000.
thought both were really good but prefered the denons over both.
i am aware that the lcd2s are probably much better so may give them a try!

I was auditioning both the 600s and 650s at the same time (I preferred the 650s, found the 600s treble a bit harsh) which made my 595s seem like Apple iPod buds.
Then the LCD-2s arrived, and they did the same to the 600/650. Miles apart!
The newer revision has even tighter bass :¬)
*grin*

will give them a trial.
but only after i have sold my stagedac, or returned the young!
i found the treble could be harsh on the 600s and the ATs too.
the denons ticked all the boxes for me.
soundstage was the only area that the others won.
isolation out-weighed that for me, so the lcds have their work cut out to beat the denons.

Enjoy the loan :eyebrows:
received the young today:)
firstly i would like to thank Keith(@purite) for his patience.
i did badger him quite a bit .
first impressions
the dac looks and feels, as expected, a quality bit of kit.
the psu is a "throw away item",for me.
have only tried a few tracks, flacs ripped from cd, via foobar using coax.
i cant say its any better or worse than my stagedac, at the moment.
which is a good sign, as my stagedac has had many hours of use and the young is , of course, fresh out of the box.
watch this space
ok i have my first query regarding the young.
if i go into the spdif advanced settings(win 7) i have options on output going upto "24 bit 192 khz".
if i select this option and then go to youtube and play a video.....
1) with stagedac connected , i get an error message and no sound.
2) with young connected, everything plays ,and the young display shows "192"
what is going on??????
this is digital coax connection, in both cases.:scratch::scratch:

Nice one Simon,
Give it a couple of days, I thought mine opened up a bit over a few hours. The treble performance is very good, very smooth for digital!
It will respond very well to a PSU upgrade & I find mine shows a good amount of difference in I/C's & I've never been a fan of the VDH I/C's, so perhaps if you've got something else give it a try. I'm getting good results with a silver I/C & a AuAg I/C.
I don't know your StageDac but it will be nice to hear what you think.

I'm struggling to understand what you're asking here, can you rephrase your questions.
Are you using the Yound driver into the stagedac? that may be why you have no sound there.
You've probably got the Young set to upsample to 192 that's why it's being displayed on the Dac.

Simon,
Sorry mate, forget that last post. I've just used my Young into my 2nd system using s/pdif with no young drivers. Different system so hard to make a comparison, but works fine.
Simon,
Try downloading & using the Young drivers, They are for the Hi-Face part of the Young & I believe are used whichever input you use, not just USB.
the hi-face is usb to spdif conversion, isnt it?

ok no worries.
gonna try usb later anyway, so have installed the driver.
still cant understand why the young displays 192, for youtube playback.
surely windows must be upsampling the signal?!?!

maybe it displays the data rate? 192kbps?

i didnt think the data rate could be this high from youtube!?

just realised my stagedac was set to max oversampling, when turned off i get sound.
so windows must be upsampling the signal too
my history of dacs started out with the "zero dac", i upgraded to the MF V-dac from their with considerable improvement.
the v-dac was then replaced by the Meier Stagedac, again with considerable improvement. (to my ears)
currently i am comparing the stagedac to the young.
i cannot tell them apart.
been at it all weekend.
maybe a speaker set-up would be more revealing?

or they could just sound the same...
or they could just sound the same...
maybe.
either way my wallet is looking smug:lol:
will give it a couple more days
sent the young back today.
could not justify the spend as it sounded identical (to me) as the dac i already own.
