Oh how I'd love this. But it's a bit too far. If I recall, this model didn't use belts. All the motors are I believe direct-drive – as befits a true pro machine. Oh well.

Very nice, Howard. I considered one of these before plumping for a Technics RS1500, which has similar 2 track record / switchable 2 / 4 track playback. Both the Otari MX5050 BII and Technics RS1500 are the machines that Tape Project plumped for as their recommended machines for those with 'Prosumer' wallets  ;)

Thanks Nick. I believe I have the original sales brochure for the RS-1500. I can scan and send you (and anyone else on AoS) a copy if that would be helpful. I'm using a Tascam 32-2B and a 4-track Teac 7300. Still looking for a UK 7300-2T. Some hope.

I bought these 'cos I'm thinking of being an exhibitor at one or shows and people really love these ancient but fine-sounding machines. We'll see

Regards

Howard

A copy of the Sales brochure for the 1500 would be fab, Howard! Thank you.

If you're thinking of a machine as a source for demos you should consider a Nagra IV-S. Very portable and they sound fantastic (I have one). I bought mine to Scalford earlier in the year and was very pleased at how it sounded. For real fidelity you need a 2-track source if you're stuck with ¼" tape.

Okay, will do. Might take a week to find. I better have your email address. I'll make these PDF via a good scanner.

Re the Nagra, funnily enough I'm thinking of it. Pride of ownership and all that, to the extent that if it worked it would be a bonus! And of course, they usually do.

A little closer to home was this:

Otari MTR-12 - £340 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Otari-MTR-12-1-4-2-Track-Analog-Master-Recorder-MTR-10-/230626989669?pt=UK_Consumer_VintageAudio_RL&hash=item35b2709665) :stalks:

Thats the size of reel-to-reel I'd go for! For £340... - I really need to trawl through these studio catagories more often..

A Gearslutz thread rates the machine as better than the MX5050 - I wonder if it has similar drive.

As an aside, I recently discovered that the direct drive on my Studer A721 cassette deck is pretty much the same motor as my Pink Triangle Annversary turntable..

Are there any r2r motors used on turntables?

Those heads look identical to the heads in my RT-909.. I wonder if they are the same?
