I see it as a good move to encourage good compliance with the latest security measures implemented in modern browsers. There's no reason to stick with an old browser these days, and its very easy to upgrade and carry over all your settings and bookmarks from your old version.

Not that worrying, MS have been pushing for people to stop using IE6 for years now.

...perhaps, but it won't be long before Chrome outstrips IE (of any variety) as the 'default' browser of choice.

MS are barely treading water at the moment...

Well, the headline is typical sensationalist journalism - it is only Google specific apps, not the actual Google search engine, so no great shakes for most people anyway.
