I have my back ground set to black to show the problem better.
I have a thin blue line that runs down the exact center of my laptop screen.
When I adjust the lid slightly up or down it go's away and all is normal.
It looks much wider in the picture but it is one pixel wide (very thin)
Just moving the lid/screen makes the problem go away.
Any ideas?
There is usually a thin ribbon cable that connects the screen to the motherboard which has either flexed a break in itself due to opening and closing the unit, or there could be a 'dry' solder joint at either end, or the ribbon cable connects into a socket where corrosion has come between connector and ribbon cable.
It's a braver man that I am to crack the lid off one of these things and if it is a 'dry' solder joint you need eyes like a hawk, the nerves of steel and a soldering iron with a tip as fine as a human hair almost to get at it to resolder it.
My advice is to take it to a specialist who is foolhardy, I mean an expert on these things :lol:
I think you nailed it Frank, I had to open this thing up once before to replace the internal power socket.It was not fun putting it all back together.
I'll leave it till I get a new laptop.
It is most likely a bad ribbon cable like you said,they are very thin and the points of connection are so tiny.

You don't need a new laptop. Just do what I do. I use my laptop with an external keyboard and screen.
The laptop is 15.5 inch but the screen I use is 22 inch. Which looks much better. The full size keyboard is just easier on the fingers.
Good idea,but you do lose the potability that way.
Jeff, you can order replacement laptop screens on the internet, we do this all the time for students who break their screens. They come with replacement ribbon cables which will fix the problem. It's a fiddly job but if you take your time and do it carefully you can make the swap in about an hour.
Look for it to cost between $100-200, depending on model.

I already spent way to much on this thing.
New 640 gig Hard drive, 4 gigs of 800 mhz. Ram,A new 8 cell battery, a new Toshiba 120watt charger,windows 7 OPS 32bit ,new power jack and to menny trips to a IT to get all the software and drivers to work correctly.
Mabey not this month but what do you think of this as a replacement?

New products are higher priced for very small additional features. Wait for the sales and buy a previous generation - you will get a bargain that way. MSI make good laptops, as do Lenovo. Make sure you need a Core i5 as the battery life won't be as good. I think Core i3 processors are superb in laptops.

The build quality is fantastic at $350.00 and the win 7 windows performance index scores are pretty respectable too.
I added 8 gigs DDR3 but even in 64 bit I will never make full use of it though,so it's really faster than I need.
The possessor is very low wattage and I'm told it will run 4 hours on it's smallish battery even using video.
So far no complaints and for $350.00 unless something seriously go's wrong I wouldn't expect any.
Thought this would be interesting to our IT guys.

The cable may have a break in it and, by disturbing it, you may have made it make better contact. Alternatively, the connector may be making better contact with its socket now.

The new BIOS (firmware in the laptop) may be scanning the system more thoroughly before starting the boot sequence. Measure the time taken to see "Windows is Starting" on both machines.
Secondly, W7-64 does take slightly longer to boot and generally has more RAM to prepare (in your case, twice as much). It therefore takes longer to become ready. However, as you have seen, once ready it uses the memory cache much more effectively and stores more disk data in RAM, making subsequent operations faster.
Try running, say, Microsoft Word or Photoshop Elements immediately after boot-up. Then close it and run it again. See the difference? This time around, most if not all the files were already in memory cache.
I did some timings for you, Jeff, to help you compare.
1) Aging desktop PC running W7-64 with AMD FX-60 CPU, 4GB RAM
Time when BIOS starts Windows: 32s
Time when Windows ready: 70s
(therefore time for Windows to start: 38s)
2) New Lenovo E11 running W7-64 with i3 CPU, 4GB RAM, SSD
Time when BIOS starts Windows: 9s
Time when Windows ready: 30s
(therefore time for Windows to start: 21s)
My work machine is much faster still, but I will have to wait until Monday to measure it.

I use a laptop exclusively and have really liked my old Toshiba so I'm happy it's fixed (at least for now) The Hp is nice but I haven't warmed up to it in the same way.
I'm on the Toshiba now still.
Having been through this computer to fix the power jack,the screen replace the Hard drive to a 640gig. add the4 gigs of fasterDDR2 and windows 7,sorting out all the driver issues,the 8 cell battery and bigger charging cord after the change.In a weird way I'm not ready to put this thing down yet.

When this thing dose die I wonder if I'll be able to toss it out? I have used it every day for 4 years and the new one just feels weird and a little off.
It's like my car thing,I have personally always owned a manual stick shift and my first truck had a Hurst shift knob,I have used the same model shifter on every car I have owned since and feel odd shifting anything else. It just fits me. I've had both the standard black and white Ball knobs since 1982 and have the white one now.
Anyone else have odd behaviors like mine.

I got both due to the part number being different by one digit.
If I go to the trouble of taking this thing completely apart I am not going to have to stop for a few dollar cable.

My heart sank when I read this. Is your laptop an HP Pavilion DVx000 series? I can't tell as the page is no longer available. The failure rate for these is off the charts. We have a stack of them at our shop, 12 to 15 piled up, completely unfixable with toasted motherboards due to overheating and failed wave soldering; wireless card socket goes then things get progressively worse. There's been a lot of griping and talk of class action. Toshiba's on the other hand rarely come in for repair, unless someone's dropped it and busted the DC input jack.

Hopefully, you got a good one, Jeff. Even still, you might want to keep one of those cooling pads handy. HP has really stepped in some poop, lately and folks are noticing. It wasn't always like this. My older HP was dependable, albeit heavy and built like a tank! And, Seagate's used to be the "go to" brand of HDD's. Now, we don't stock anything but WD's. It's totally ridiculous; but, the only real advice I can give (after 20 yrs as a tech) to anyone, regarding PC's, is "get the best warranty you can and make them pay for it when it inevitably breaks".
Well I'll never know as I returned everything,it cost me $50.00 but after looking at HP's failure rate I belive I came out ahead.
The net is full of unhappy HP customers and I don't want to become one of them.
My Toshiba has been a good laptop and to be honest I was not doing well at making the transition anyway.
I know I am an odd duck,always have been, sometimes at my own demise because I have been brand loyal long after the brand has gone to Hell.
I used to only by Blaupunkt car audio then Alpine both are crap now imo.
I think my next laptop will be an MSI,looks like they are head to head with the best Lenovo Think pads.
Sad how once iconic quality can become Yugo like crap before you know it.
HP already went down the pan with printers (I will never buy HP again at work). It seems like their laptop division is following suit.

This time an HP Pavilion DV7 laptop. The note on it from one of the other techs says, "Dead Motherboard". Now, I have to call yet another person and tell them the money they spent just went down the toilet. I hate having to do that. :rolleyes:

What a nightmare for HP customers,Some people we knew had a little Indian market and 0nce or twice a week a mob would come through the door buying calling cards food ect...
Like a flash mob really, I was there once when they came.
It was a small store and would become completely overwhelmed.
These people where here from India for training from HP on a special work visa. HP trained a huge number and rented most of a large near by hotel to put them up. After training them we had huge lay offs here.
I once really hoped to work for them,in High school I was in there junior achievers program till my Mom wouldn't make the drive after work to take me anymore as a freshman with no ride no choice but other kids that got to finish it got jobs after high school.
And HP was the company to work for too.
I did really ok because I loved electronics,and they knew it.
I took it a little more serious than most of the kids.
I remember lusting after HP calculators when I was young, they were definitely the ones to have. I do have a HP 16C and it's a superb calculator, very well built and uses reverse notation so no-one I know can use it :)

My Mom has one made by HP for real-estate it looks like yours.
I have an HP scientific calculator it came with a book and it was given to me by someone who couldn't use it. I figured out just the basics and it dose have an = button.
How did you learn to use such a hard device?
I will never forget my first pocket calculator... It would only fit in your pocket if your pocket was 6X8x1 inches and could hold 5lbs.!
And it was very expensive,much like my first digital watch bright red digital display and all.
I ordered a web cam and its cable too today,it has never worked to my knowledge.
If I am going to be in there I may as well do it all.
I feel for you techs,going inside these laptops is like a very hard 3D jigsaw puzzle that can be broken very easily.
While I'm in there I'll clean out the fan lint,it was pretty clean inside last time.
I will try to take pictures as I go,it might be fun to document my headache.
It would help if I was actually good at this kind of thing,but the little plastic clips are sometimes hard to figure out.
Like the one to the web cam. I wanted to release it and plug it back in to try to get the web cam working but it didn't want to come unplugged,guess I'll be able to look at the plug on the replacement cable and figure out how to release it with out breakage.

My first rule is to try to do no harm.
LOL! It requires patience, a lot of coffee and, most importantly, the RIGHT TOOLS. This latter I can't emphasise enough, you need a really full set of small screwdrivers with all sizes of slot, posidrive and torx heads.

The VGA ribbon was not roughted correctly and pinched at the hinge.
The web cam cable was completely cut off at the screen!
Way to go Toshiba...
I also discovered a a small ribbon not plugged in and now my audio and video lights work! I never knew they where there!

Hey now,I did upgeade the power jack,replace 2 cables and upgrade from a 200 gig hard drive to a 640 gig. upgraded the RAM to 8oo mgz. 4 gig. and the battery and charger unite. not to mention the win. 7 upgrade and driver search to make that work and made all the programs work together flawlessly.
That should at least make me an honourary special idiot.
Since this is only my second computer ever!
And all with a smallish phillips head screw driver and my 20+ year old Swiss army knife!

Sometimes we use my Fender heavy guitar pics to work the chassis of some laptops apart (doesn't scratch them). Jewelers tools work wonders.
I'm not sure about Martin; but, maintaining my sanity is about making sure I'm not an IT guy at home! At "chez moi" it's about valves, vinyl and tape. Nowadays all I use my wife's laptop for is surfing. I gave my son my PC and at the moment, I couldn't be arsed about replacing my old laptop. BRING ON THE DANCING GIRLS!! Just joking. I meant, time to spin another record. :)
I enjoy my days at work - mostly. There are times, however, when I get tired of supporting family and friends as I am the 'IT guru' to them and get hauled in to fix dodgy PCs with tired drives, messy installations and problems galore.
The blue line came back today...

After giving things alot of thought,I am going to use it the way it is and resolve my self to live with the thin blue reminder of my abject failure to fix this craptop computer.
Regardless if it go's another day or year without getting much worse I'll replace it with a Lenovo Think Pad T420 when it dies,as I'm not putting any more time or money in this old POS.
I don't care about having the fastest computer or the cool guy video card,what I want is a bullet proof laptop with a 5 year extended warranty that even covers being stomped on by a frustrated mental midget with steel toed boots!
The T series think pad seems to be the bench mark for long life.
Anyone here use a laptop every day for over 5 years with little to no problems?

Sorry to hear that. We had such high hopes! What happens when you attach an external monitor? Is the blue line still there? If it is, it's not the screen. If not, it could still be the ribbon cable and/or connector.
Really though, LCD panels are a sinch to replace... ...especially considering what you've already done. ;) Still, I understand exactly where you're coming from. I think life would suck more if you still had that HP!
Have you looked at ASUS. They've made a lot of stuff other "folks" who used to put their name on them. As far as I know, they are the only manufacturer to offer I one year free accidental breakage warranty (pretty cool), in addition to the normal warranty. Might be worth looking into if you're eventually going to ditch what you've got and start fresh.
I'd recommend Biff's test with an external monitor to ensure that it's the laptop screen at fault, not the graphics chip. You could then order a replacement screen from eBay or whatever. You may as well, Jeff, you've done all the scary things now and you know what to do! If you so love that laptop then repair, not replace. I would do the same.
As for using the same laptop for five years, the answer is no. They do get tired and faults spring up; more to the point there is often something to stop them from being upgraded to the latest OS and I usually keep my family of laptops upgraded. Saying that, I have an old Tosh laptop upstairs which is more like six years old and I upgraded it to W7 without any problems. It did need a new HD, though, as the original one was so slow.

Yep, had a company IBM T42 for 6 years used and abused day in day out - was only replaced last year because we introduced new encryption software which was too much for the old processor. Guess what the company replaced it with - yep, HP... :doh:
My equally ancient music laptop T42 struggles a bit now with a 1TB external drive, but is still giving sterling service. And I know everyone else in the world hates them, but my Sony Vaio main laptop is 2.5 years old and hasn't missed a beat - with Vista! :eek:

We're going out tonight and I foolishly said I'd drive, :( shouldn't be a late one though so should be time to take some medicine when I get home. :)
I plugged into the 65 inch T.V. and (NO BLUE LINE).
It was awesome to C art of sound on such a big screen.
When I turned off the computer screen and just projected to the T.V. the image was really pretty clear but I think it's a little much for my video card to drive both with out it looking a little fuzzy around the edges.
Is it really worth now putting a new screen in this thing,I feel like I'm repeating my 1988 Ford Thunder Bird Turbo Coupe.
I have dumped alot of money in this craptop and I feel like maybe it would be better put into a new one.
I'll look for a good deal on a screen I guess,and a realtek microphone as it has died too.

The screen is matt finish anti glare,my screen shows every reflection and finger print being glossy so it will be a nice change.
I'll have the oldest functioning Toshiba Satellite A305D craptop in town after all this...

I had to tear the hole damned thing apart again.
I replaced the microphone, and upgraded to a newer web cam by the same company (chicony).
The new screen is mat finish,not glossy.
And it was no drop in replacement but I made it fit.
There where 2 extra tabs I had to break off,and the bottom came too far down to put the hinge cover back on so I had to trim it with a moto tool.
I used Deoxit for gold on all the gold pin cable connections.
Everything works correctly for the first time ever as even new the web cam never worked,but it all works now!

Well the Toshiba died tonight on AOS!
The video card seems to have died I don't even get a boot image.
Just a black screen,but you can see the back light is working.
I will use a monitor with a VGA cable to test it further.

Well,it went 3 more months since the last time I had to dig into it.
Some times things have just run their course.
I have logged alot of hours on that old girl so there is some sadness in seeing it dead for good.
I don't hold out much hope this time.
And if it's the bran new screen I just replaced I'll be even more upset.
The screen lights up a dim blackish blue so I doubt that's it.
An external monitor will tell you whether it's booting up ok, Jeff. If it does, then most likely you have a screen ribbon cable that isn't seated properly.
Since it went out while sitting undisturbed.
And I seated the ribbon cable 3 months ago very securely.
That leads me to believe it's the VPU chip.
It is booting as it gives the win 7 chime.
It's official.
