cheap MC cart for Jelco 750D

Hi.

I have bought a Heed Questar MC phono stage and I would want to use a MC cartridge with my Jelco 750D.

My budget is limited to 180$.

I hesitate between the Audio Technica AT-F3 and the Denon DL-103.

I would get a DL103 and re-body it with a Aluminium body available on UK Ebay for about £40 sometimes less. There is a least one long thread on AOS on the DL103.

How does the DL-103 sound like? I listen many rock and electronic music.
I have already 2 Audio Technica MM carts (AT7V and AT-440) and i really like the sound.

I haven't run mine for a while but it does have a excellent mid range. If you ask around the various forums you can usually get a low hours one for around £75 which where mine came from. I might give mine a spin later on this week although I do love the Lyra Argo my current main cartridge.

The 103 is a good match to the jelco 750, but needs some woek before it gives its best. Without this work, the supposed limitations of its admittedly superb conical tip are more evident than they should be.

The high output DL110 or 160 would be better all-rounders without all the faff - up to you ;)

I like the AT moving coils, but even I found the AT-F3 a bit vicious and raw in the treble if truth be told. The "5" is about as raw as I can take, and this needs an arm like a Rega RB series to tame it.

:hmm: I've had a couple of 103 ... latterly in one of those nice blue alu bodies off ebay (UK) - has no-one else found them rather unforgiving of well-used records ... ?

could well be I wasn't setting them right I guess.

Hi, I have found that total mass at the Headshell should be about 32 GRAMS, I Have increased weight at the Counterweight with Adhesive Lead strips from ebay all very cheap

Popped my Alu bodied DL103 on today, set my Dyanvector P75 to MM and running the Dl103 through my Cinemag SUT. In short forgot how good the DL103 can be, perhaps a little less depth than the Lyra Argo but all things considered not much in it. Ludovico I would certainly recommend you give it a try.

I use a DL110, and am very happy with it, it's particularly good at playing older worn vinyl, and is excellent value IMHO ;)

I need a low output MC cart (to use with my Heed questar MC phonostage).

many have found the 110 sounds better into a standoard MC input - punchier yet with no more distortion as the lower impedance cuts the output down..

Interesting... The input impedance of the Heed Questar MC phonostage is 100ohm, the gain is 64dB. Do you think it can work?

Others have tried it and love the results, even me I think, although it was a long time ago (this pickup has been around for decades now).
