AOS is the friendliest of all the audio forums imo. I rarely post on any others and, in fact, I've made a conscious decision to limit my time on any internet forum/website whether it be audio or otherwise. I started to feel uncomfortable with the time I was spending on the web. Depending on who you're dealing with communicating with someone via a keyboard can often be impersonal and open to misinterpretation - a far cry from face to face conversation. It's always seemed obvious to me observing arguments and altercations that people often say things they wouldn't normally have the bottle to say to someone's face. Why do I get the feeling the vast majority of people who hang out on internet forums day in, day out are probably a bit lonely - the kind people who wouldn't say boo to a goose and were bullied at school.
Present company excluded of course! As a brilliant a resource it is for gaining knowledge and information, I just thinks its far healthier to dip in and out of anything that involves the internet.

I have to say though...that your comment above is a tad stirring too.
AOS is not perfect all of us make mistakes and some of us me included have been on the end of nasty posts on other forums. I don't post in those places any more as while I am personally happy to debate things I am not happy to be treated like a Witch and burnt at the stake or treated rudely. There is imho no defence for rudeness or self appointed guardians of the flat earth or round earth attacking people. Manners and politeness cost nothing and say a lot about those who conduct themselves with such and equally those who don't or can't.

Whilst I appreciate your kind sentiments (really I do), and am glad that you like it here, I must mention that we don't normally allow threads which in some way pour scorn on other forums, even if as I suspect, that wasn't strictly your intention.
Wigwam is Wigwam. It is very different from AoS, and as such, attracts a different sort of individual. The reason the main UK audio forums work (pfm, Wigwam and here), and are successful, is because all have their own established and individual identity, which appeals to certain types of people.
These days, I get on well with James, and the guys from the 'Wam who go to Scalford, so I really don't want that relationship spoiled by providing a vehicle here for people to slag off Wigwam.
I will leave the thread open for now, as I hate stifling discussion, or locking threads, but I would ask that all comments are well-intended and constructive, otherwise those which aren't will be removed and the thread locked.

you could argue that, on the more 'mature' forums (ok, that might be a contradiction in terms :lol:) the act of typing (i.e. time), with judicious use of smileys and an edit function, makes for more considered dialogues than is often the case in the 'real world'.
But that 'time' aspect is costly, it's true.

Not to brown nose as I really hate that sort of thing,but If they can put up with me and even welcome me here. Marco and his angels should be Canonized as Blessed Saints of Audio Chat.
I have been banned for life on one Audiokarma, A badge I proudly ware.
That site is humorless and sucks on so menny levels due to there supermoderators.

A couple of points guys, 1st off i'm not too impressed with the opening post of the thread, it's nice to be recognised for a job well done, but why do it by pointing out the shortfalls of other sites, you didn't even bother to say why you think the moderators here are so great, it isn't cricket in my eyes to point and wag fingers, just because you feel the moderators are doing a poor job elsewhere doesn't automatically mean that the moderators at the AoS are any better (i'm sure we are:eyebrows:) and to be honest other sites don't concern me, this one does.
Also other people from other forums come here and read our posts, threads like this one don't put us in a good light, and it's easy with a topic like this and in particular the way it was started to descend into nothing more than us criticising other sites and the people that are members there.
Finally i think that we do have some great guys at the helm here at the AoS, who aren't afraid to step in if a thread is getting a bit out of hand, to be honest though i don't think things ever really go that far here and it's the members who should be applauded for that, most of us here are able to debate points raised and chat in general, without offending other members, we keep it good humoured and an enjoyable site to visit. :)

How strange. Here's me thinking that WigWam find it acceptable for one member to call another member a C""T and that shows them in a poor light when in fact it's AoS that's apparently at fault for identifying the contrast. It's a logic that escapes me. Presumably you find the WigWam policy – in this specific instance - acceptable?

Personally no i don't, but to be honest howard i really don't give a monkeys what goes on at wigwam, it's what goes on here that concerns me, also why did you feel this thread needed to be started in the 1st instance by a single line of text and a link to thread on wigwam that had gone bad, seems to me you were more interested in getting members here to criticise the way things are at wigwam, rather than opening a genuine discussion on why this is a great site. It's because you singled out wigwam, which could make it look like you have an axe to grind with the guys over there that worries me:(

It seems to me that you don't have enough serious things to worry about if you feel that this matter really is worthy of "worry." Try doing what you and I are doing, right now, in Syria, Yemen, Ivory Coast and so on. I never take freedom of speech for granted. That's why I always respond rather than chucking my rattle out of the pram as others (and not you, incidentally) are prone to do. My challenging approach is a full time job. It's not something I slip on as and when. With me, what you hear, see and smell is the real me. I'm far from ubiquitous. Some like it, some don't and the rest are indifferent. And that's why, in answer to your question, I posted what I did and in the way I did. I make no apologies. Not even a little one!
The way I see all this is that it's only a hobby forum after all. A rather good one, but not a declaration of war. nor a war-zone For me, if your level of worry as indicated earlier was the extent of my worry then that would represent a level of contentment that I can barely envisage, let alone achieve.
Now then, what possible benefit could I generate to my benefit by worrying 'the guys' at Wigwam? And isn't that just a little politically incorrect? Are you certain that the entire forum is male? If there is a benefit, then it escapes me. And as I mentioned elsewhere, if I was interested in participating in, let alone winning some inconsequential popularity contest then I most certainly would NOT post on any forum.

Nice here though isn't it? Well, I think so. I feel comfortable at AoS, and I don't take that for granted.

Howard, I only like being called a C**T, on Thursday afternoons between 11:00am and 11:01am during a lunar eclipse on the 35th of the month; so, I understand how that could get under your skin. But, if I ignore "that guy" it's impossible for him to make me upset. If everyone ignores "that guy" he's got no other option but to see how far he can bury his head in his bum. Makes no difference to me. :)

Who give a shit what others get up to...I'm sure people talk about me behind my back but it dont worry me. I'm sure most of us do the same. Human nature I'm afraid.
Forums (all of them) tend to be like clubs, they do get cilquey, c'est la vie, and newer members do tend to feel ignored.
I have posted on a few in my time and make no judgements on the members or how they are run. If I dont like it, I dont have to stay. Some are down right rude, others just dont seem to want anyone from outside.
Someone wants to call me a cunt, I dont mind but I do mind if they get pissed when I reciprocate.
Theres always some asshole out there who wants to make your day worse than theirs. You only have 2 choices if you want to preserve your sanity, ignore them or leave. Life's too short....especially at my age......:cool:

Tim's got it nailed square on the head there, I reckon. It's thanks to the good folks who make up the congregation that make this such a great place. Funnily enough, it was Howard's blog & his talk of the friendly and non-confrontational nature of the folks on AoS that brought me here in the first place.

Come on, I went decimal in primary school. I'm happy being a 0.2 wit.

In my opinion, AoS is the most "un-cliquey" forum I have ever become a member of and it is THE only forum I know where new members are unconditionally welcomed apart from being asked to introduce themselves nicely and to reveal their real name. I firmly believe this request to use proper names reduces the risk of creating a "keyboard cowboy" mentality where it can be perceived that nobody is a real person only some text on a screen, so being disrespectful and abusive is therefore acceptable. Provided nobody loses sight that there is a real person behind that text with sensitivities then AoS will continue to be the excellent forum that it has become.

I agree Frank...thats why I am still here. However, as pointed out elsewhere, no forum is perfect. Pick what you consider best meets your needs and aspirations and ignore the rest.

Spot on, Ray. I think that should be included in Our Ethos! - With the emphasis being on "IGNORE the rest"...
It might remove the need for folk to announce, rather dramatically to all and sundry, in a somewhat attention-seeking way, why they're leaving a forum when they discover things about it which don't precisely match with their sensibilities ;)
