Hi everyone, my name is George. I think you'll find I'm more green than your average entry level turntable enthusiast, I literally had my first encounter with one yesterday. I was cleaning out my a tool shed in my backyard when I came across a Technics SL 1500 that my recently deceased father purchased back in '75. It was in a pretty sorry state, tied up in a trash bag, and buried under a pile of rat-eaten drop cloths. Needless to say I was pretty excited to try the thing out. After I went inside and googled the model number I realized I'd found a little bit more than an obsolete curiosity from ages long gone. :)
As I said before, up until this point I've really had no experience with the more technical side of audio equipment. Don't get me wrong, music has been a huge part of my life since I was a little kid, and it's one of my purer passions, but I was never a "gear head". I certainly appreciate sound quality, but I've never really wandered outside the digital realm. I download music from the internet, store it digitally, and listen to it on my computer through a m-audio 2496 sound card which outputs to a stereo (Sharp brand, I don't like it and intend to replace it). Occasionally I listen with a pair of Shure HD 280s.
The gear that I HAVEN'T been using (but intend to clean up and put to use with the help of the fine fellows in this forum ;)) is as follows: A SL 1500 in need of restoration, a Sony DE845 stereo reciever, and two very handsome looking speaker cabinets, about 3'x1'x1'. I haven't taken a close look at the latter but I'm very excited to get them up and running. This is all part of an entertainment system that has been sitting in my living room being neglected for about ten years now. I know they're all high quality pieces, but they need some love and attention before they can really shine.
I've been giving myself a crash course in the anatomy of turntables over the past 24 hours by lurking various fora, ehow articles (useless...) and blogs. But I got the sense that if I was going to do the deed correctly I would need specialized advice from people who actually know what they're talking about, and this forum seems to be the one with the highest concentration of reasonable, friendly, and helpful brainpower.
Oh, and my musical taste. I really hate trying to wrap up my entire set of musical preferences into one easy-to-digest phrase, because I've got a pretty eclectic library, but I can try. I mostly enjoy rock and roll, psychedelia, metal, progressive, folk, blues, and jazz from 60s and 70s, as well as some contemporary stuff.
I think that covers everything!
