Speakers for a Yarland FV34B?

Hi everyone,

I have recently purchased a lovely 40W per Channel Push Pull valve Amp.
It's the Yarland FV34B using 4 x EL34B reviewed by Ken Kessler in HFN last December. I actually managed to buy the review unit, and its really, really nice. But I feel my 11 years old Proac Studio 150 are lagging behind...
So I was wondering if you had any suggestions to complement the amplifier with a good pair of floorstanders?
My room is about 4.5 m x 4.2 m.
The rest of the system is Gyro + Tecnoarm + Dynavector Karat 17d3 = Whest PS20. ICs are silver litz. Speaker cable is QED Xt400.

I have around 1K to play with...
I have had a stream of Proacs in the past but always linked to SS amps like Cyrus etc...
So I guess sensitivity wasn't an issue then...
I would like to get a little bit more bass definition and larger soundstage if poss...

Yes indeed I got it from Chulan in Kingston, and I can say that he is an absolute gentleman.
Tannoy Cheviots... nice. I guess they will move a lot more air in my room than my small 5in drivers...
Thanks, I will keep an eye on these. The only worry I have is that I am not familiar with these speakers and I can't really tell if they are in good nick or not!

40w is a lot with a valve amp, that will drive most speakers that aren't a nasty load. How do you feel about DIY, either your own or someone else's? The reason I ask is that open baffle or full range box speakers are great with valve amps. For soundstaging, you can't do much better than a full range driver, unless you go electrostatic. If you wen't for an OB, you could have twin 15" bass drivers per side, which will give you deep, open and tight bass. WAF becomes a factor with these though, so if that's a problem, a full range driver in a box speaker would be a great choice. A friend on here builds beautiful speakers using full range drivers, have a chat if you're interested. It's what I'd do in your shoes, unless you are happy to make your own. His name is Colin and he's called Toppsy on here. Have a look at this thread for an example of his work-

My GF is very understanding, so I believe she would be fine with big boxes like that. She always say that the sound should be bigger... So there you are.
I am more than happy to go the DIY route. And some of the stuff I have seen on AOS is awesome...

I didn't build them, but the 8" full range drivers at the top are Visaton B200's, which are about £200 a pair. The bass drivers are Eminence Alphas, which are about £50 each. All you need then is a couple of bits of wood for the baffles. They sound fantastic, and I'd say surpass anything else commercial at several times the cost. Steve (Aquapihrana) is the man that built them.

Far and away the best bang for your buck speaker wise IMHO.

I drive them actively with a Behringer DCX2496. 4th order, crossed at 200Hz.

You just buy the active crossover for about £250. It's plug and play.

Yes, but then you'd need two amps to drive the speakers.

Francois, it would be easy to have a crossover made, so the speakers could be used in the conventional way. Steve lives in Ireland now, so if it's not easy for him to make you a pair, I'm sure Colin would be happy to make them for you. His woodwork is superb.

I think you are right Ali, the best is to have the Xover done in a traditional way.
I have got to say that Colin's speakers looked amazing.

You're welcome. If you do go down this route, you'll have far better speakers than going down the commercial path with your budget IMHO.

Yep. I've had 3 variants in recent years, all good but I think parts quality may have suffered in the later ones the earlier one (KK reviewed) was best.
