Missions 753

Hi all,

I have some original mission 753,, how much are these worth today??

I haven't a clue these days, because all sorts of crappy tat goes for huge amounts, yet there are still ignored "sleepers" out there if you know your stuff and are patient.

A ton to a couple of hundred the pair possibly?

Probably only about £200 to £250 tops for a mint pair. My 752's I've seen for £150 and they are better than the more complex 753.

In all honesty anything is only worth what someone else is willing to pay ;)

If i remember right these have 4 bass/mids & a tweeter & i wouldn't be interested unless they were about £200 as i'd only sell them on, no interest here! Others that may well want to upgrade may well pay more :)

trouble is, ebays sale price seems to vary so much,, i dont want to get stiched up !!

I sold my excellent condition pair on ebay for £210 a few months ago. I'd have been happy with anything over £150. My buyer did say that his maximum bid was £275.

The 752 had the tweeter set a bit strongly (a Mission characteristic for so many of their models), but the Aerogel bass unit was good (I believe Audax are making them again?), albeit in a box the absolute maximum size the driver should be used in I was told.

righto keith, thats helpfull, i would of thought around £160-200 was a good price, although im not really up to date on selling on ebay, is it reccommened to say,, start them off at about £120 and let it run without a reserve??

For a metal dome the tweeter is well behaved (sloping baffle probably helps). In fact by modern standards 752's are on the warm side. Easy to live with which is why I have had mine for 16 years. Decent bass extension for a skinny cabinet with 2 drivers. The 753's were more forward sounding from memory.

The original metal tweeters were a bit bright, I've replaced mine with some silk Monitor Audio ones (peerless I believe), and they are much nicer to live with.

Which is precisely what mission did with the subsequent 'Freedom' version, opinions are divided, with some people preferring the old original 'brighter' ones. I much prefer the silk ones myself, probably depends on ones other kit

They do require a large room, as they are at their best about 2 to 3 meters away from the listening position (probably due to the multiple drivers), and the reflex system seems to kick in properly when given a bit of volume. They are also extremely 'fast' and handle percussion particularly well.

Like all of these small footprint floorstanders they are a bit of a lifestyle compromise, but compared to many these days the cabinets are reassuringly sturdy.

As most people state about £200 to £250 seems to be the going rate

I believe the dome was "metallised" from memory (but could be wrong), which would indicate a form of metal paint or plating on a different material. The treble could be a bit "waspish," but if you sat a few metres away from them (enabling the drivers to integrate with the room reflections), they could be involving. The shape had appeal as well and this sold them to many and influenced a lot of todays squeakers in my opinion. our London "Concert Room" was one of the main venues for listening to proto-types I seem to remember..

It was proving to be the hardest component of all to choose, so as a stopgap I got a pair of 752 Freedoms (second hand, naturally) for £150. They weren't the best at any single aspect of performance, but as all-rounders they felt the most consistent to me. Three years on and I've still not got round to starting my search again. With a 401 front end and Exposure amps they discover their bass.

£200 is a likely used price but that considerably undervalues them in terms of performance.

Pete as you say at £150 the 752's are a phenomenal bargain, I nearly bought a pair off ebay until I realised I had nowhere to put them (not much use having floor standers upstairs), sanity kicked in eventually :lol:

I do recall annoying the hell out of the Hi-Fi dealer I bought my 753's from, as it took me about 5 hours to choose between them and the 752s, I think either are great value for money...

Mission 751s were also nice speakers. Did the 751s work well with Audiolab amps?
