View Full Version : Windows 7 premium. Any good?
I only use a notebook these days and it comes with windows 7 starter but there is a upgrade to premium if you spend £40. Some say its as good as the much liked xp. I wouldnt know , iwent from windows 95 to vista!
Im not sure if i need it, i tend to use Google chrome because its faster but not everything syncs/works 100% if im not using explorer.
Anyone think its worth it.

If you dont see any extra features you need maybe keep it as it is.

Hi Colin, I'm not sure what the differences are between starter and premium, I'm using home premium 64 bit on my ASUS laptop, and XP SP3 on my desktop & other laptop.
Other than the 64 bit support I don't think there's a major advantage for the home user with windows 7 over XP. I prefer the look and feel of XP, perhaps I'm more used to it.
However if you're used to Vista you'll love Win 7, Vista was the biggest pile of dog does ever released.
I use Chrome in favour of IE too, but I don't think that has any baring on your selection

I dont use the laptop for home entertainment much now i have playstation and bravia internet and i think the laptop is only 32 bit. The aero system of multi windows navigation looks good but probably not worth £40.
I think i will stick with windows 7 starter. I just wish i could sync with windows messenger better. It doesnt seem to work :scratch:

That's the first thing I turned off, absolutely rubbish, grinds the GPU to a halt...a poor attempt to emulate Macs IMHO, for no functional gain :steam:
P.S. Turn off the 'transparency' for the windows too, pointless again

It's not sub standard, it's just that you can turn off these useless 'pretty' effects with Win 7, with apple you're stuck with the girlie interface, and the waste of resources that brings with it. ;)
It's infinitely better than Vista, your PC will run at twice the speed...almost as quickly as XP :lol:
7 is alot faster than vista and doesn't freeze up.
I cant complain to much about the standard version and i would like to use explorer, windows media and the rest of it but when it comes to search engines mozilla or chrome are much better
I've been using W7 Ulitmate for what seems like ages now on the desktop and 2 out of 3 laptops, the partner wont move to W7 from XP on her laptop
she doesnt like it !
I have noticed that on the laptop that did have XP on now W7 the battery lasts approx 1hr more then when it was on XP

Dont talk to me about batterys. Ive had this samsung a year and the battery is dead. A new one cost £50.
I've had to replace quite a few laptop batteries at work int he last 12 months.
I have a travel battery thats meant to last 9 hours it last 2 !
Some replacement batterys claim to last longer than others, i dont know if thats true or not.

Should have bought an Acer :eyebrows: The battery in my 6+ year old lappy is still good for well over an hour ;)

My ASUS UL30 will go for 7+ hours... :ner:
out of the 1000+ laptops I bought last year for work, only 2or 3 have had battery fails
When you search online for replacement battery there is no official website, its all dodgy looking sites. I dont want to go to Tottenham court road and pay the price of a new laptop.

If you post the make and model number someone will find a link to one, many of the ebay batteries are OK.
Many are not really UK sellers though, advertise as UK but post stuff from China.
We've had nothing but trouble with batteries and power packs from China,
they all over heat and burn what ever they are resting on.
Hi Mark, its a Samsung N130. What does mAH stand for by the way.
Found 7200mAH and 7800mAH, 6 cell and 9 cell and so

mAH = milliamp hours. 1000mAH = 1Amp hour ;)

I use W7 Ultimate X64 and have only good things to say about it. Battery power lasts longer than the Vista Business x86 I was using before. On top of that I can run graphics intensive packages at quite good speed compared to before.

It's a very poor GPU that can't handle aero, and in fact most of the useless graphics chipsets don't run in aero mode anyway. Those that can generally run well and W7 looks all the better for it.

Run CPU-Z (now called CPUID) on it. It's one of those utilities that I'm never without.

Correct...OR it could be caused by old graphics drivers.
The Win7 Mediaplayer accellerates playback of several video formats by exploiting the GPU. The same goes for IE9, Flash, ...
So unless the GPU is ancient; remember to update your graphics drivers and Flash

I have it totally pictured in my crazy head,It would open as a big circus tent, each ring would be a window,opening rings,pictures,music,videos would be side shows,Games included like create your own human oddity,kiss the bearded lady,freaky clowns to prompt you and help you navigate.It would be great for business presentations.Spread sheets and word transposed as tattoo's over a fat mans belly in 3D.

Surprise pop up monkeys.
Can you imagine the screen savers!
I would market it to the business community by offering a free cup of Starbucks coffee with each one sold.

Try running over 50 copy windows in parallel and see what happens as your performance progressively degrades (not something that occurs on XP), and who gives a flying whatnot as to what it looks like, it's what you can do with an OS that counts, and how performant it is doing it...all of course IMHO ;)

Running 50 copy windows is not a realistic test of a desktop OS. As for how it looks, I'm in the IT business and rolling out a nice looking OS like W7 delights my customers and gives us a little recognition for keeping ahead of the competition. Just today I upgraded a desktop PC with new graphics card supporting aero and a 22" widescreen monitor. The manager concerned loves it and will probably be a little more productive for being happier at work.
What's wrong with keeping the customer happy? It keeps me happy :)

I know it's a bit of a stress test...but it's something I do quite a lot when loading FLAC albums to my phone, from my NAS, drag and drop etc.
I noticed that with win 7 the whole operation progressively slowed down the more concurrent copies I requested, whereas with XP on a lower spec machine they just get queued up sequentially without any degradation in performance. I suspect the pinch point is the additional graphics requirements, but it could be something else, either way I'm not impressed.
As for 'prettyness' over robustness I'll have the latter any day, as I'm my only desktop customer...I'm not keen on 'form' over 'content', give the buggers green screens I say ;)

Oh agreed, there is nothing wrong with XP SP3 if you just want function. However, since W7 runs faster on the same modern hardware compared with XP, you can have your cake and eat it. Turn all the pretty features and aero off, and there you are!
