Thinking about getting a new phone and the Desire is around my payg budget. Can anyone give me an idea on it's sound quality. If anyone cares to suggests better alternative feel free my budget is around £250 and Android is a must have so I can have another Sonos controller in the house.

I use mine for internet radio with Ultimate Ears triple fi 10's. Sounds fine to me. Good phone too.

Only ever used budget earphones with my HTC desire but it is good :)

I do like android phones.

A desire HD with the slightly larger screen might be better for a Sonos controller:

I have a standard HTC Desire, with a 32Gb card, a pair of Koss Portapro's, and a pair of Sennheiser CX300 Mk2s, depending on how portable I need to be.

I use Poweramp to play back FLAC, with gapless support, and the sound quality is excellent, it's worth the few pounds as it's way ahead of the free alternatives;

I also use SqueezeCommander to control my 3 squeezeboxes & server, which is excellent, particularly the data caching on the new version, not sure about the Sonos app though.

There is also a SqueezePlayer client for android too, although I have no use for this currently on my phone, but it does mean that a cheap android tablet with a USB out could become the future of Squeezebox players. Or even more useful when one can stream your collection from a hosted environment...It'll probably be a while before there's enough bandwidth for FLAC. :)

Oh and P.S. it's an excellent phone, very reliable & robust

Edit; FYI We had a bit of a thread earlier in the year about FLAC players for android phones, and also my troubles with fake sdhc cards, but at least I got the SDHC card migration strategy sorted out...

Cheers Mark. Yes, I think they are very good. From memory, even better than the Sennheiser HD580 precisions I used to have. I have a Glow Audio Amp One, a nice little EL84 SE amp, which I use as a headphone amp driven from my laptop as I now work away from home. Sounds great. I am also going to have a friend build some small full range speakers, so I'll have a nice sounding system that is small enough to cart around with me.

Thanks everyone. For the price the Desire seems to be the best choice a newer model say Desire 2 would be nice but having an iPad I cant justify the expense. I'll be using my sennheiser CX300's with it.

Whilst I use my iPad for Sonos having an extra controller would be nice and the Android app has some nice features apparently.

Stay away from the HD, as it's pretty much the same spec as the normal desire, except the larger screen is a terrible drain on the battery life...

I really like my CX300s for convenience, air/train travel (blocking out the background noise etc.), but for wandering about I found that the Koss Portapros offer a better sound and they're very good value @ £17 IMHO

Looks like the Desire S is a definite improvement, more RAM and on board storage, with a better GPU, better battery life, and the gingerbread OS as standard...

Falls a bit between 2 stools for me, too big for a phone, too small for a tablet...

Desire S for me I think, and an e-pad at a later date perhaps ;)

In the end I bought a Samsung Galaxy S2. Soundwise its better than my ipod Nanon 2nd gen. It plays FLAC without having to download another app, not that thats a chore as it takes seconds to download stuff to this phone via wifi. The screen really is a joy to behold. Ive lost hours playing with it :stalks:

Agreed am a huge Koss PortaPro fan. Fabulous 'meaty' sound with loads of energy.
