FFS!!!!
Busted yet another suspension spring on the car today - the FOURTH one this year alone :steam::steam::steam::steam::steam::steam::steam:
Our village is strewn with speed humps and the nearest town is similarly populated, so it's no wonder car suspensions takes the brunt of all this local council stupidity. I fail to see why people like me who observe the speed limits and am very alert in built up areas should end up with endless busted springs while the speeders that prompted these evil devices whizz across them regardless and never seem to damage their vehicles. Lorries, buses, vans and motorbikes tear through the village totally oblivious to the speed bumps, so what the heck was the point in installing them in the first place?
No, it's easier to make the innocent motorist suffer daily with these bastid things rather than put an officer with a radar gun to prosecute the speeders. Better still, take them to be crushed to teach them a real lesson :steam::steam:

Sorry to hear about your springs though, Frank. I totally agree. Speed bumps: invented for idiots, by idiots!!

i feel your pain, they are one of the most stupid, idiotic ideas ever, we have loads of them here too, as you say, they do nothing to prevent the guilty ones from speeding, they just cause misery, stress and inconvenience to the rest of us!:steam:
I remember a news story a few years back where a guy got so fed up that he took a JCB to them!

I am in agreement :steam: These humps are everywhere in towns and villages. With the pain in my back it can be a bloody nightmare. The people who thought of them/installed them should be put in stocks and p*****d over!!!!!!:steam::steam::steam:

I am quite surprised you are having so many problems, is there a design/weakness issue with your car, as we have lots of speed bumps here and so far no problems. I must say that if I am in a hurry I don't always take them slowly either. I do drive within the speed limits though.
I agree though that they are a stupid idea and do cause the emergency services a lot of grief.

by chance is your car a Saab 9-3 ?
I drive a Cadillac BLS which is based on and built in the same factory side by side with the 9-3 and it's just taken 2 months to get my front springs replaced !

Audi's and Mercs have also had problems with broken springs of late.

another annoying thing is if one breaks you have to replace two !
My car is a Volvo V40 and the other car was a Ford Fiesta which was the wife's, both of which allegedly have springs that are prone to breakage, although I think it is them bloody accountants at car manufacturers practising penny pinching to buy THE cheapest springs on the market - probably chinese which explains a lot.
Well, I'm never shy of being unpopular... :) Currently campaigning to get speed bumps set up in my lane - we have a primary school at the top of the hill, and I kid you not, some of the Subaru's and "Billied up" Peugeots etc. must be doing 70-80mph by the time they go past it... The only thing that is going to slow them down is speed bumps...

Frank I saw a program on TV a while back which says if your car is damaged as a result of a pot hole you can seek compensation from the council that is responsible for the road, seems to me this is a similar case, now i'm not suggesting that you would get them to cough up right away, but if plenty of people complain and you have a witnesses to corroborate where your spring broke they may in the future have to reimburse you, might be worth speaking to other people in your village to see if anyone else has had a similar problem, then have a word with a solicitor or citizens advice to see how you could proceed. At the end of the day it's not like this is the 1st spring you've broke, so something is obviously up with the road.
Why not buy after market springs?
And upgrade your struts and shocks.

Perhaps these total idiots with their flashy subs and pugs, etc., should go back to school and be educated about the dangers of speeding; humps or no humps. The universal problem: a few spoiling for the many.

The development that my house is in has speed ramps everywhere. I have to take them very slowly as my car is low-slung. My previous car used to bottom out on them - I regularly had to repair the underside. They are annoying but average speeds are pretty low, which at least makes the area safe.

i totaly understand where your coming from on this, however, there must be a better way to slow speeding idiots down more efectively and in keeping with the sensible, IMHO speed bumps are not the answer!

My Focus has got through a pair of front springs in its long life, a not uncommon thing apparently, and i've heard of 2000 era Fiesta's having similar issues..
I prefer speed cushions which are far gentler on car suspensions IMO. We have some nasty "sleeping policemen" on our supermarket route and if the two of us go together, I have to take the long way round to avoid them as my wife has a long standing back problem and the jolts upset her greatly.

Speed humps do not work.
they did try a few things near me,narrowing the road and put a few chicanes in that did work !

Chicanes don't work either; drivers only slow down to negociate the chicane then put their foot down until the next speed hump or chicane.
The only thing which seems to work is to replace the entire stretch of road with one having a near cobbled surface. That slows the buggers down (myself included)!

Goodbye speed hump!
It's a little known fact that the proliferation of the dreaded speed hump is down to red tape and cost, but that's all about to change, as the Government today (June 13) announces new measures to ease the life of local councils. The result could mean a lot less speed humps on the road, though more 20mph zones.
Until today it was necessary to get approval from the Department for Transport before erecting speed limit signs on either side of the road. Hence it was easier for councils to build speed bumps, which naturally brought the speed of traffic down.
The changes are part of the Traffic Signs Policy Review, which in effect reduces red tape and cost. It also aims to reduce the number of new road signs erected - from a cost and clutter perspective.
Councils may now paint the speed limit on the road instead of repeating the upright speed limit signs, though signs at the start and end of the zone are still required.
Norman Baker, Regional and Local Transport Minister, said:
"I want to end the era of top-down government by providing a radical devolution of power to local authorities and communities.
"If councils and local communities want to put in place 20 mph schemes on residential roads or use common-sense measures such as variable speed limits outside schools, then they should be able to do so without spending time and money satisfying unnecessary Whitehall diktats.
"These changes will reduce costs for councils wanting to use 20 mph schemes, allowing them to act faster in response to the needs of their local residents while still ensuring that drivers know what speed they should drive at."

Hate to gloat but my '87 Vauxhall Astra is still going strong in speed hump filled London and I don't remember it ever having new springs.. (maybe once long ago).
They probably just make springs like they used to..

Please not. Pseudo police officers paid for by tax payer's money who do nothing to clear up the crime rate, ponce around in their traffic cars all day and prey upon motorists who cannot even argue with them for fear of being taken back to the police station for some more abuse and bullying. I have nothing but contempt for them.

Apparently there are plenty of speed bumps in the area where I live but I can't say I've ever noticed any. Clearly the solution is to buy an air-sprung Range Rover.....:)

My last car, a Renault Megane, had to have one spring replaced and repairs to the rear suspension. A short while later the rear suspension failed again. The car was 11 years old and I decided it wasn't worth throwing any more money at it and scrapped it.
These days I slow down to an almost stop for any kind of hump and do my best to avoid potholes and unraised drain covers. It pi**es off other motorists but I can't afford for this car to be destroyed.
Our local Sainsburys installed those nasty rubber humps that were so severe people stopped shopping there. They were removed a month later :lol: They now have tarmac humps but I still have to drive over them at an almost stop. It definitely reduces the number of times I shop there.
