Nothing to do with me. I just spotted it, liked it and shared it!

It's huge. Got to give the designer credit for a massive build, despite the obvious SME style suspension.

Yep. Made by my uncle many years ago. Has made several versions of this and other decks. Has one for sale, at the moment. Not on Ebay. :cool:

No hernia. But has had heart problems.
I see that turntable went for £460 on Ebay.
My uncle has built another even better that's for sale, not on Ebay. They do come apart easily for transporting.
This will probably be the last. He had a heart attack a few weeks ago and has to take it easy now.

Thanks John, much appreciated. He's 79 in August. Lost my Aunt a few months ago.
I'm 60 in July and the thing I hate most about getting old is thar everyone I know is popping off. Its almost like they're queing up for it.
Anyway, it'll be a real shame when he goes. The talent he has for anything mechanical is amazing. A good eye for detail, he even stripped down and rebuilt a Pianola. Sold it to Michael Parkinson years ago.
He started me off in electronics when I was six. Got me to fit a cable harness to this motorbike he was rebuilding and let me switch on the lights.
Next thing was, I was building my first valve amp from a kit.
Pure magic to a seven year old. :cool:

Well, that bit works. But when I try to upload the pictures of my Uncle's turntables, the folder appears empty. Its not, though. Any ideas?
Btw, the pic above are some amps (Mullard 5-20) I liked so much, I'm building my own.
The other picture is of a prototype chassis which is my cousin's handywork.
All laser cut & etched. :cool:

One of a pair of Wharfedale "Airdale". Highly modified, of course. The last two manufactured. One was mahogany, the other walnut. Both reveneered. He's had them for years.

Two mid range in the top. The ribbon tweeter can just be seen. A 15" woofer in the bottom.

It seems that a certain Tony Bolton at HiFi World wants to do an article on my uncle's turntables. He's asked to see the photo's.
Well, I've got over 50 of them on photobucket. Some on here already, more to follow.
I wonder if he'd do an article on my Mallard 5-20 amps when they're finished. :cool:

Here's photocopy of an article many years ago. The picture and the little highlighted box (Silvernote) are of his first ever home made turntable which he probably sold for about £500. This may of course be a copy of the original but note the price it went for. :stalks::eek:
Healthwise, well, after a triple bypass and a pacemaker, he seems to be fine.

Regretfully, I don't have pictures of the Quad II amps that he renovated ( they looked original and brand new when finished) nor my favourites, the BBC AM8/6. There were many others. too. :cool:

Some exceptionally beautiful turntables on this thread and truly exceptional craftsmanship (I came close to winning the original eBay one), but I'm sorry - the SMrEga arm on this one is just plain WRONG!

Don't take this the wrong way, but why is the arm wrong. (I don't know any better)

I'm just not personally sure that the combination of SME knife-edge bearing housing and a Rega style armtube is the best way to go. The armtube would have to be VERY light in order not to overload the bearings mechanically which in turn would affect its rigidity.
Again, it's beautifully made but not the design route I would choose, personally - no offence meant!
Which deck is it that's for sale?

Seems a little odd to use so many GL75 bits to make a belt-drive turntable. I'd love to see his take on an idler drive.

This is the new turntable for sale. A true bargain at £300. Last one to be built. A true collector's turntable. Pick up arm will need wiring. :cool:

Tony Bolton did a very nice write up on my Uncle Richard's turntable, in particullar, The Beast, in HiFi World September 2011. At three pages long, its worth a read. :cool:

I don't want to appear rude but the above makes no sense to me; how delicate do you think a knife edge bearing is? There is absolutely zero chance of the bearing being overloaded by the mass of the arm. For a bearing to be overloaded to the point that it's mechanical structure is compromised it would have to be close to mechanical collapse - this is a very long way from occurring in this situation.

Its in Bristol. (Brislington area)
I can be contacted at weekends to arrange viewings, etc.
There's an article in the HiFi World magazine Sept 2011 about the Beast (another turntable) by Tony Bolton. He has more pictures.
Its VERY heavy so a courier would be expensive.
