It would seem that the Coles unit in the left hand speaker of my DM2's is u/s :eyebrows: If anyone has a single unit or even a pair for sale I would be very grateful...

Thanks...

Is it the 4001 same as in the Spendors, Dave?

Coles still make them - might be worth an email. http://www.coleselectroacoustics.com/driveunits.shtml

If not, there's a NOS pair on the bay for £68. (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Coles-4001G-16ohm-Spendor-BC1-SP1-NOS-PAIR-/330542367259?pt=UK_AudioVideoElectronics_HomeAudio HiFi_HiFiSpeakers&hash=item4cf5dc421b#ht_3274wt_905)

Yeah I noticed the NOS pair on ebay too Alex. I'm hoping someone has a spare single unit knocking around going for a little less than £68, but if all else fails I'll grab them from Willy's HiFi. Not sure which I need though, apparently there are 8ohm and 15ohm versions. I'll have to take one out to check when I'm feeling a bit better. I have been quite ill for the past couple of weeks and have been laid up in bed  On the plus side, it has meant I've been able to listen to a lot of stuff ;)

Cheers for the heads-up...

Yours is the so called 16 Ohm unit Coles 4001G, measures 23 Ohms DC resistance.

Same in DM1, DM2, DM2a, DM3, Spendor BC1, BC2 etc.

S'cuse me fellas. I've probably got this wrong, but I thought I understood from the Yahoo Spendor forum that the Spendor version was different. maybe it's just that there is a "standard" version for other uses and a "high impedance" version for those used with the famous HF1300 "main" tweeter, which still sounds great despite it's (by modern standards) narrow bandwidth.

Conveniently, I have a pair of Spendor BC1's open at the moment, just checked the Coles in them, they say 16 Ohm on them , not 15 as I mentioned earlier.

In actual fact, that is just a label for them as the DC resistance is 23 Ohms, so their impedance will be even greater than this.

I believe that this is the same unit as in the B&W DM1, DM2, DM2a, DM3, DM4 etc. I have in the past interchanged them with no problems.

There are low impedance versions of the Coles, but I don't think they were ever used in the speakers mentioned.

Very early 4001G's were branded STC. I have some of these as well, seem identical to the Coles ones.

It is possible that Spendor 4001G's may have been selected, if so, this is now not important, far more important to have a good working unit than a blown or malfunctioning selected one.

Sensei,

I have a pair of of these units which I bought on Ebay - however I have never tested/tried them. I would not be asking for much (a lot less than £68!!) - please pm me if you are interested - I can also provide photos if wanted.
