Welcome Erik,

Can't get the pics I'm afraid. Try uploading them to photobucket or similsr and then transfer them over to here.

I wait with bated breath :)

Hi Dave...

Strange if I press the link.(killerdac)... I get everything...the whole story including the pics...which in their turn have a link to a million of my building photo's...

Please check, if the mistake is on my part as I will go ahead and find different ways

Hi Erik, welcome to AoS :) Unfortunately going through multiple links like that probably won't work for 99.9% of members on here as we aren't members of the forums linked to ;)

What you need to do is follow the instructions here & load some to this site (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2) :)

It's dead easy honestly :eyebrows: All the best & i hope you enjoy your stay! I for one am interested as i do a good bit of DIY myself :)

They don't look small either :eyebrows:

Deeply impressed mate and believe me, I don’t impress easily.
I’ve seen endless totally pointless pics of peoples systems on here which give absolutely no indication of how the system sounds and a great deal more about the priority of looks.
This lot on the other hand; well who cares how it sounds, the fact you’ve built it puts you head and shoulders above the “look what my money bought” crew.

It all looks gorgeous Erik and for the first time on this forum I am actually envious, your skill and imo taste is outstanding :)

Yes I actully did, it is a scaled down version of the Avalon Sentinel.
Around 170 cm height. It took me 2 hours a day for 2 years to build it.
(I pretty much have built my own system over the years).

I use the Accuton Thiel units: Diamond Tweeter D-20, Ceramique C-79 in the top cabinet, Ceramique C-95 in the mid cabinet and Ceramique C-220 (2x) in the lower cabinet.

I am afraid the building link on the dutch forum is in dutch but my the day-to-day pictures (hundreds) are available to non forummers.:)

A definite +1 from me as well. I'm still at the bodging stage and really ought to get round to building a kit at some point. Even a Naim/Avondale style ZAP 250 using used bits would be a start ;)

Erik, when you've settled in, please would you be kind enough to explain each item in a bit more depth, what circuit topology you used and why, the rationale behind it all etc.

These are the xXx-heads (if you can see them :))
Most of the work is inside...
I used different sizes of layers and saw particular shapes....
The diamond tweeter got his own chamber.

Veneer in Birds-Eye Maple (mind you not bookmatched but ONE piece meaning a lot of veneer is used and selected to acquire this!!!!)

Leather Baffle with a Felt diffraction shield/frame into the surroundings (yes into instead of on-to, lot of extra work:))

Erik van Voorst
19-05-2011, 18:05
Around 10 layers of Rustin Oil handrubbed and polished after each layer to get the woodpattern "alive".

Cough  :stalks:

And may I ask what proportion of that was taken up by the crossover?

From the look of the units, you’ve gone to a lot of trouble to get them looking something special, such as the mother of pearl and finish, but I imagine the same basic design could be build at a lower cost if some finish and detail were sacrificed (?)

Erik van Voorst
19-05-2011, 19:23
Crossover 5000 euro's....believe it or not that was a steal....ahum....honestly

The mother of pearl was done in Malasia so that was only 250 dollar (a 1000 euro's in Holland so NO WAY)
Ebony is an outrage when you have to pay....but despite that I used it everywhere....mind you Neil Patel painted every part black on the 175.000 euro's Sentinel...

Welder

I’ve got that many questions it would probably be quicker for me to learn read Dutch and work my way through the site you link to ;)

By the way, what sort of music do you like to listen to on that wonderful system of yours?

Indeed I am so in awe of Erik's talents that I forgot to ask that question.

Just to echo the others here the love and attention to detail you have put into those speakers (what is the other gear like inside etc, based on the speakers no doubt fantastic) is amazing. I am envious of your talents and having a workshop to exercise them in.

I am sure the system sounds incredible.

I can only echo what everyone else has said, simply amazing. Given that it has taken approximately 1,500 hours of time, and I would expect a decent craftsman would charge at least £50 per hour, then we are looking at a pair of speakers around the 100,000 Euros mark I guess - they certainly look worth that given the attention to detail. Respect. :)

Thanks Guys..

In due time I will post my "other stuff" a bit more in detail...:)

To answer the music-question I have a lot (3000 original cd's) From the very start of cd invention I have been busy trying to get it to analogue level ....only the last few years I have that feeling that I have come a long way and succeeded...

Mind you it takes an over the top dac and over the top transport...years of building....
Lesson I have learned is that the cd contains an incredible amount of music eversince 1984 (or around) but the problem is not that it is limited (in a way yes) but most of the CD-PLAYERS are limited...so the real trouble is getting the music out of that silver source....:bulb:.

For us DIY-ers it can be done...:trust:

.the award for me is now 3000 wonderful pop, jazz and classical cd's....;)

Awesome stuff, as usual! What make are the (bigger) blue capacitors, shown, and what max voltage are they rated at (or available in)? I'm presuming that they are power supply caps? :)

Marco.

Erik van Voorst

The smaller ones Phillips HQ, the bigger ones Mallory and the 2 coca-cola cans SicSafco.

I honestly do not know the exact voltages and cap.... I will TRY to search for my notes :)

I assume you will find a hardtime buying them...I had them as NOS...

Marco
27-05-2011, 08:43
Thanks for that, Erik :)

Ah, I see, they're NOS..........

As I believe that electrolytic capacitors deteriorate with age (when used or not), how successful have you found using NOS ones to be, compared with high-quality new production equivalents?

Or perhaps you've not done the comparison?

The reason I ask, is that I'm soon to re-cap my valve power amp, and was looking for what options were available. I had thought of BHC Aerovox, but would be open to suggestions as to anything else that was excellent.

The capacitors (I would like electrolytic types) need to be rated at 550V minimum.

Marco.

P.S I think that the most suitable place for this thread is in the D.I.Y room, which is where it will now be moved.

Love the look of these cables.

Given the level of DIY we are dealing with here, and I presume you made all parts of these cables, I would love to hear your ideas on topics like burn in, is it of relevance, and how much affect it has on your equipement? Do you spend much time on power conditioning and the like?

What is your prime goal when developing your kit? You obviously love the process the asthetics and the materials.

You must be in a profession that calls for all this development know-how, can you let us mere mortals know know you do?

I am afraid I have an office deskjob like most people do....I am an accountmanager.

I work 4 days a week.

My hobby is wood- and metalwork every friday I am at it,..and my passion is music (4 hours a day in the evening) hence the audio-equipment is made by myself over the years....the commercial stuff despite their pricetag was not doing it for me...(and yes I have the lot...Krell, Audio Research, Wadia, Avalon etc)

I read a lot and try out a lot and slowly but shurely you know which direction you want to take it.

I made everything myself..this particular cable has a silver wire with ricepaper and silk a mesh screen and ricepaper and silk again finished with a sheath. The plug is a modified Silver Eichman with a Cocobolo encasing and brass strain relief...the ebony is a kind of cable-resonator instead of damping.

Elco's do deteriorate but "un-used" it takes a hell of a lot longer.

For instance I would change elco's after 10-15 years when they have been permanently on the grid (speaking from my own experience).

The exchange (say if you pick the same elco's) will result in a crispier "more alive" sound.

Mind you deterioration of an elco is a bit comparable with tubes.....you can change the item "any-time" it is a bit up to you and how "un-easy" you are with your sound.

I do not particularly "hunt" for NOS elco's since I believe that the newer ones are giving great sound as well. My personal favorites besides the unobtainable Blackgates are: Oscon, JJ, Elna and Jensen Silver Foil.

Maybe in your case the Jensen could be a lovely alternative.

The bigger Mallory was something like 20.000 uF/85V.

Hi Erik,

Thanks for that.

Yep, but how do you know exactly how old they are when you buy them? ;)

Perhaps there is a production date code one can refer to? If they're 15 years old, or more, before you use them (as some NOS components are), then they may well already be past their 'sell by date', as it were...

I'm very interested in this matter, because I'm a fan of using some NOS components, such as tubes (as generally I prefer their sonic presentation over modern varieties), but if they've not been used then, unlike electrolytic capacitors, there is little deterioration.

However, I'd be uncomfortable using NOS capacitors if I couldn't guarantee that they were performing to their original specification, because when a power supply cap (for example) goes pop, it can cause quite a bit of damage to the equipment.

I just wondered if it was something you'd considered? :)

Mind you deterioration of an elco is a bit comparable with tubes.....you can change the item "any-time" it is a bit up to you and how "un-easy" you are with your sound.

I agree. I have the tubes I use measured periodically on a tester, but don't obsess with swapping them every 'five minutes' for fear that they're wearing out. Tube deterioration, in my experience, sonically, is very subtle and happens over a long period of time, particularly with NOS examples, as the materials used are usually much better than current production varieties.

When I buy NOS tubes, I'll only do so when the seller has provided accurate test measurements (and the measurements are good), but of course it's still a risk.

Thanks for that, Erik. Do the Jensens go up to 550V? I'd be using these as power supply caps in a big Class A valve power amp

Amazing work :stalks::stalks::stalks: This isn't a criticism but you'd have got much better results by using a decent transport from a donor CD player that the cheap transport from the portable stereo.

A decent pro metal Philips mech with glass lensed laser would be vastly superior imo ;)

Can't fault the build though, never seen anything like it before :wow:

Erik van Voorst

I only did the electronics in the livingroom...I have a small private workshop....you can only process those materials with pro tools...sorry :)

I "only" use the Sanyo SPF Laser and the JVC chipset...it is the synergy of that PARTICULAR SET and is eg. found (hardly modified) in Lab47 stuff...

I bought about 10 the same boomboxes and went ahead (re)building and trying out...the standard small print is VERY trickey and poor quality..

All inspired in the beginning on the American DIY Shigaclone thread and Polish tread...I myself was a bit skeptical of that hype so I started to take it further and further and.........

I hate to say it but here you are very wrong....besides that fact that it is commercially also used in Lab47 very expensive PiTracer Flagship Transport...I found out myself how analog this Sanyo plastic stuff sounds with the JVC chip set...never ever heard that particular quality in the big boys transports to be bought only in the High-End stratosphere.......

Obviously all the other qualities of that Sanyo set where still vastly inferior compared with them .....but that "analog" sound got me hooked and it took us approx 1 year to build it to my liking......nearly completely built on our subjective "hearing"....hahahaha..

I (and often We) where able to listen to it during the build on a daily basis.....changing/adding/leaving out components...

I have built a mini PiTbull Transport version of this for my best audiofriend ..he sold his (very expensive !!!) Wadia Reference 16 for it....:)

No need to say that spares will never ever be a problem for me...hahahahaha

You do surprise me ;) I'm know Wadias are very good having heard a good few myself, i'd still not part with my Krell transport though, not even for a bakers dozen of them ;)

Don't worry, i have spare lasers for my Krell to  There are literally hundreds of machines out there with the same laser fitted (even if it's not the same metal mechanism), any CDM4 laser can be transplated to this metal CDM mech :)

I know I fell in love in the "early" days with the Krell Transport what a thing of beauty with its transparant platform...wow..

Anyway while building and searching you would be surprised how many expensive transports work around with the cheap Sanyo Laser and the cheap Mabuchi motor ( 1 dollar)...yesssss to be found in the TL Flagship from CEC (Lampinizator) and Wadia and and and......

There is a lot of "cheap" stuff (but performing well !!!) beneath the high end with high prices surface if you study Transport components....

Something tells me i'm not using the same transport Erik ;) What i'm using is the DT10, a very rare beast indeed. You won't even find mention of it on Krells website under older gear.

From what i can gather it was the most expensive transport they ever built. Not that i give a hoot as i payed £547 delivered :) Same as in the pic in my signature.

I tend to agree ;)

Can i ask you a question please Erik? What type of saw did you use to cut the rather intricate rounded edges on the wood that was used to house the midrange drivers in your big speakers?

I have a feeling that no jigsaw will have a blade narrow enough to do such tight turns, however i have seen some kind of odd saw that is used to make jigsaw puzzles out of solid wood or plywood & will be happy with very tight corners :)

I just can't remember the name of it though  Any help will be much appreciated ;)

E2A:- i think i have sussed it, looks to be a scroll saw :)

Scroll saw?

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/images/library/product/large/06/060112150.jpg

It's possible to get incredibly tight and accurate curves with one of these kiddies - much more precise than a jigsaw. They use a reciprocating blade (up & down like a jigsaw) rather than the single direction loop feed of a band saw. The blade is a little more like a wire with teeth than a conventional blade.

Erik van Voorst
19-06-2011, 08:41
To make the facetted edges I used a oldfashioned handsaw and after that
I milled (as in shaving) and lots of sandpaper taped on a wooden block
As final I glue an mdf panel in place under the right degree.(polarisation behaviour)

After getting the facets ready I used my first layer of veneer....a kind of very thin and tough "bakelite" to get a flat underground for my Birdseye-maple veneer.

BTW
By reading your question better I figured out that you mean the jigsawlike inner panels....
I did it exactly with the last pic of the electric scroll-saw.....around 15-30 minutes per panel...do the maths...!!
While sawing I stayed pretty much within to calculated lines I had drawn on each panel so I knew approx. the amount of liters (when devided by 2) of each mid-cabinet.

Reid Malenfant
19-06-2011, 14:55
Yes, that is what i was refering to Erik, the rounded edges of the interior of the midrange enlosures. Looks rather like a jigsaw puzzle ;)

Now i need a scroll saw  To go with my circular bench saw, jig saw etc etc :eyebrows:

Erik van Voorst
19-06-2011, 17:03
I bought a very cheap German one for that particular job...75-100 dollar
it worked okay !!!
I gues it took me about a good 40 hours to do all the puzzle-like cutting with it.
Do buy a bundle of thin blades...the break very easy ;)

If you want to go that way pay attention that you use different panels in thickness and wood...in order not to create a dominant resonance.
The panels I glued together (with a variation of soft and hard compound to glue with) varied in 12-22 mm thickness and I used e.g. Beech, Multiplex, Merantie, "Spaanderplaat", "Softwood" and sheets of Lead in between.
Beware in the end the Mid can only be lifted safely by 2-men.:eyebrows:

Beware in the end the Mid can only be lifted safely by 2-men.:eyebrows:
I'm quite used to that, my speakers are only just over a foot wide, about two foot tall & only 18 inches or so deep - yet they weigh in at over 168lbs (76Kg) each

Add in the stand & they total just over 102Kg..

Good point with the different thickness materials :) I have other ideas that should help things but i do like the puzzle pattern one so will go with that ;)

I must admit my audioset is probably one of the heaviest I even phoned the builder of my house in order for him to guarantee my floor construction :)

I only built for my hobby...as soon as it turns commercial it all will go very wrong and fun comes in on second place...;)

I did quite a rebuild to my house so very unlikely we will ever move.....(all "homebuild", kitchen, wine cellar, hometheater, garden etc) both are very happy with it...and besides that my living room is accoustically built/prepared for my 4 hours a day music....

Incredible.

I'm reading this through and I'm thinking, "Wow, that's a nice, compact looking sub enclosure". Then I study the specs and my jaw hits the floor when I notice that the piddly looking speaker in the base is actually a 15" unit

Jesus Erik, don't ever site that sub next to the Alps, you'll give them an inferiority complex :lolsign:

Hi Erik,

Amazing work, you must be very proud of your system!!

I am curious as to how you construct your cables with the rice paper and silk. Have you got any photos of how they are made?

I do a little DIY, but after seeing your pictures, I think I should retire my soldering iron. :)

Eric,
what a treat for us to be able to admire your system. It shows what we all want from our stuff. The ultimate.
And no doubt you will be an inspiration to many fellow geniuses on this forum to push themselves even further to get the best out of their builds.
No manufacturer could do this, could they? And that's what makes it so special.

Obviously awarding a piece of gear as a prize would be pretty pointless. Unless, perhaps, someone has an old Sanyo boombox buried in the closet. ;)

I've heard so many (especially manufacturers) say, "that's impossible". In reality, it's improbable, not impossible. The improbable doesn't matter to some folks. This work is a testimony to that.

At the moment I am busy testing with a Tube- rectification and stabelisation in my pre amp ARC ESP-6 RE.

For what it is worth I had a private shootout with a audiobuddy with a respected Kondo M7 and in the end it was a draw...maybe it gives you a bit of an idea.

I got inspired by Kondo so I am triggered again....this time to listen to tube rectification....first impression is a go ahead. Keep you informed:)

At the moment I have finalized my tuberectification...for my pre amp ARC ESP-6 Rugged Edition.
It is still on an experimental board but next week I will start building a "proper platform" for it... next to the external first power supply.

I am inspired by Kondo as you know but also by Josh Stippich (Electroluv) I am seriously thinking of giving it a Josh look...since nearly all the choosen parts are as a coincidence Organic.

I have picked everything by ear....regardless of price...it took me quite a while. *

Parmeko Transformer
Parmeko Choke (and yes it was sounding better than Audionote and Tango in my set-up)
Allen Bradley resistors
Yamamoto Tube Socket
Anhui Tongfeng Oil Filled Capacitor
Bybees
Mullard U52 ( bloody expensive )
Wiring (will be mainly a combination of solid Silver and OFC copper)

I had Jean Hiraga over to my place from France, in order to review and listen to my set.

I am in the March Edition I will get a copy soon and will try to translate ....if you excuse my French..:D

I am a bit proud since he normally reserves 5. Pages for doing sets ( he travels around the world for it ) and with me it took him 6. Pages....

So far i have only the front page...and translated...the goldsmith with the golden hands...ahum..promising

I know what you mean...and believe me the winners were clear winners as well.

Maybe I need to clarify it a bit.

The so called shoot out was done over a period of nearly 3 months with 2 days a week a listening session with two other audiobuddies.
The whole show was including a so called infamous blind testing...but always relaxed because only one person knew most of the time what he changed in the other room.
We tested Audionote, Tango, Obbligato, General Electric, ASC you name it.
All the stuff stayed in for at least a good burn in period.

I have all the luck of the world to have an audiobuddy who has a high end component shop...so as long as I don not trim the leads or solder I can make use of his supply.

The outcome surprised me as well and I would usually order Tamura, Tango, ASC straight from the internet ( you have no choice and rather safe to buy the best component outthere ).
However I cannot by the sheer name and reputation if a noname component outperforms in the total set up.

No need to tell you that I respected the values so there can be no influence in the that parameter area.

I just want to honestly share ....instead of going safe.

BTW if you look at eg the Parmeko Transformer and Choke materialwise...not to bad...using very old copperwire ( we all know its value in audio) and is sealed in oil....I guess buying NOS nowadays as new would also be a hefty pricetag.

The chinese cap is filled witht castor oil and sounded quite lively and emotional a virtue I am after.

Since all the components are evaluated and choosen for my tube rectification for the pre amp ARC ESP-6 Rugged Edition started the actual building of a second dedicated separated power supply "box".
It will be a Josh Stippich look (Electronluv) and mixed with my own style...

3mm copperboard...winning cap stripped from its plastic jacket and sanded and sprayed 4 times with alu look.

I use a Yamamoto solid teflon and out of a block ebony I fabricated a ring for it.
