View Full Version : Decent mains cable for DIY?

Gazjam

Trying out a linear PSU for the Caiman soon, but its got screw connections for bare wire Mains in and power out - no sockets.

Anyone suggest a good mains cable to hook it up with?
Thinking Belden 19364 or Lapp Oflex CY, something like that.

Only need a short length, might as well hook it up with something good eh? :)

Belden 19364 is good stuff for not much dosh and more flexable than the CY stuff , i like it .

Why not PM Mark Grant & ask him if he'll sell you some of his DSP2.5 screened mains cable if you need to have an earth connection. If you don't need an earth then the 1mm^2 stuff used on the figure of 8 type leads would be fine.

Don't ask & you certainly won't get ;)

Nice one. Got your Supra digital coaxial cable yet? :eyebrows:

If not, get yer arse in gear, daftee, (as you will shocked and stunned at how ridiculously good it is) for the money! ;)

I look forward to your review of the Supra, should it materialise, in Strokes of Genius... :eyebrows:

Which cable is this?

Marco
18-05-2011, 12:34
This one, Ali:

http://www.supracables.co.uk/digitalaudiocables/trico-digital.html

It's what I use between my CD transport and DAC (albeit fitted with WBT NextGen-0110 Ag RCAs). Unfortunately my Sony CDP and DAC don't have BNC connectors, but that situation may change shortly.

In stock form, the Supra costs around £45, and laughably outperforms digital interconnects I've used at TEN times that price!

Then when you fit it with WBT plugs, you enter a different league again.... ;)

Marco.

Gazjam
18-05-2011, 16:10
an oldie but a goodie...

get it here? (Magic length of 1.5m) :)

Actually Im not sure anything under £50 is classed as wanky Marco...think it kicks in after that.
Being an ex Nordost/Audioquest sheep (now Belden/Mark Grant) anything above £45 is borderline "twatty"... ;)

The Trico hits the sweet spot - another VFM classic Im sure. :)

Nice to hear, if you ask nicely you'll often get what you want :)

I'm very happy with the DSP2.5 i bought off of Mark, something tells me it must be part of what is now totally eliminating any pops or clicks that i used to get on my system. Even with a dedicated mains spur it didn't cure it, now it's as silent as a windless desert :eyebrows:

absolutely Mark.

Its nice to be nice and have to thank Mark G. for helping me out.
He even prepared the cable ends for me, knowing what I intend to do with it.

All part of the friendly AOS way of doing things I'd say. :)

I sell quite a bit of lo-rad mains cable and think supra cables are very good, watch this space for some thought on the digital cable. The sword is supposed to be quite good as well I have heard from customers.

Hey, all the Supra fans are coming out of the woodwork - I thought that I was all alone! :)

For me, their cables are excellent, and based on solid engineering principles, and not 'foo', like so many other cable manufacturers.....

Just been listening with the Supra in place for the last hour, I'm impressed, very seamless presentation across the frequency range, great detail but not harsh at all, very smooth. Me likes so far!

Marco
03-06-2011, 23:21
Nice one, Ali. I thought you'd like it. For me, it's just stupidly cheap for the performance on offer (and by that I mean it appears to add very little of its own signature), but I guess that's 'audiophile cable' lunatic pricing for you! :mental:

Get used to it, let it 'burn in' or whatever, then if you want, I've got some spare WBT 0110Cu plugs you can borrow. And if you like the effect, I'll do you a deal.

Trust me, the WBTs move the Supra from being merely very good, to exceptional! ;)

I'm not sure which big heid your talking aboot Marco...knowing the reputation for your "tastes" I'll respectfully leave it there... :)

on a serious note..
looking forward to hooking it up...

Got a set of WBT-01 10Cu plugs as well, but want to run the cable "stock" for a while as I want to just listen to the thing AND I've never soldered up a cable before and dont want to make a cock out of it before I know what I'm doing!

Lifes too short and I'm done faffing about with cables..already have my "fit n forget" interconnects/mains cable and speaker cable..just the digital cable to go.

Some cable DIY tips/links nearer the time would be great?

That's my policy too, dude. The Supra should sound great as-is. The WBTs, simply let more info through, and are the icing on the cake.

Pop a thread in the DIY room, when you're going to do the job, and folks will no doubt help. Or PM Mark Grant, who did mine, and he'll keep you right!

:)

actually...
no idea.
HifiCables out of stock getting it back in (they say) next week, been nearly two weeks already.
Shame really, as they are the cheapest place to buy, but dont want to be waiting much more than I already have.

Is stock scarce all of a sudden?
might just pull the plug on this one...

Mark Grant
08-07-2011, 16:43
Is it a mains cable or Trico you are waiting for ?

If it was a 1.5 metre Trico there not on the distributors price list now, only 1m, 2m, and 4m and Bulk cable.
Might be a special order from Supra.

Gazjam
08-07-2011, 17:00
Thanks Mark,

its the 1.5m Trico cable I ordered.
No eta though...

I ordered the 1.5m cable as its the "magic length" according to some, reflections n all that stuff.
I thought, why not? :)

Also, it gets borderline twatty price-wise (for me)when you go in to the 2m length.

Mark Grant
08-07-2011, 17:12
Maybe best to phone and ask as the 1.5 metre where taken off the July trade price list which might make ordering more stock difficult.

If you have some decent connectors maybe make your own if you're handy with a soldering iron and have some heat shrink etc , the cable is a very reasonable price.

Gazjam
08-07-2011, 18:31
Mark,
I have a couple of WBT nextgen connectors I could use?

Not an expert DIY'er, but if I can solder components in my Dac I can solder a cable!
Any ideas where the cable can be bought, just as a contingency?

Thanks.

Mark Grant

Not too difficult to terminate if you are good with a stanley knife and side cutters. You would need a bit of heat shrink to make it a tight fit into WBT nextgen.

MCRU
08-07-2011, 18:46
Maybe Mark has bought all the available trico cable and no one else has any left? Who said 1.5 metres is best anyway, surely not Marco, what does he know!

Its OK being the cheapest price but if you have no stock??? I am using one now instead of an atlas optical and it beats it hands down but the supra connectors are not that good so maybe they need to look into that themselves.

now why didn't I think of checking that Site.... ;) :)

Actually I've no idea how to put one together, never done it!
Loads of stuff online though I'm sure.
Any potential gotcha's with the braid or anything?

Don't want to start a "barnie", but what do we think here of the whole 1.5m is best thing?
I could get away with a 1m length no problem if it sounds the same?

Marco
08-07-2011, 19:12
Hi Gaz,

Personally, not to put too fine a point on it, I think it's a load of bollocks. So my advice is to worry not, buy a 1m length, and be happy!

And trust me, that will be case when you spin some tunes with the Trico in place ;)
