Please help me choose a turntable.

Evening all.

I am after some assistance. I have recently come into some Records and would like to purchase a record player either new or second hand.

So my budget is just over 200£. I do like good sound quality so any bog standard deck must be out I guess. Do I opt for the budget end with the likes of Project, or do I head down the direct drive route which really appeals to me from simplicity. The obvious choise but out of my budget is the 1210. Are the Stanton copies any good?

Ease of use and minimal maintenance are important to me.

If anyone has any thing for sale i would be interested if it was the right deck for me?

Grasshopper you have realised at last that all music is not digital drool and that vinyl sonic's rule the roost. Others will try to tell you otherwise but consider this? Vinyl will/has outdone cd's in longevity terms. Thats a given.

There are many budget decks that will fit the bill but the trick is to get a true audiophile deck secondhand for the price of a second hand one.

If anyone on this forum as anything to do with it you will end up with a technics deck...:eyebrows::):eyebrows::)

thanks for the input,,, you are right I need a guiding hand. I have considered the Technics on the bay but they are just out of budget at the moment and I would be concerned buying a deck that might haave been thown about a bit.

You don't want 'Thrown about a bit' deck that's for sure.
There are many entry level decks worth considering. amongst them are the project 1, the Linn axis, Rega and the Dual. Even a Thorens may be possible on your budget.

Check out ebay and local shops, there are some great bargains to be had.

What's wrong with a Rega RP1? Utterly reliable, decent warranty if you do need assistance, very, Very long lived with cheap parts as necessary and with fantastic residuals after a few years (old Rega's in dire need of a service fetch far more than they cost when new...). OK, their wall-support at £100 is a bit of a price-joke now, but they're good turntables with no sonic mush going on in the mid bass as so many of their competition are and were prone to, including many 1970's direct drives. Some call this latter "warmth," but I tend to regard this as colouration myself. The RP1 claims to significantly better the previous P2 as well.
