"Pink Floyd and EMI Music, announce a comprehensive release schedule, to be launched on September 26, 2011, encompassing CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs. Super-deluxe box sets will contain alternate takes, unreleased tracks and restored live concert screen films including in the Dark Side Box a live recording of the legendary The Dark Side Of The Moon performance at Wembley in 1974.

In addition to remastered CDs (called The Discovery Series) and the Immersion (CD / DVD / Blu-ray) box sets will be a series of Experience Editions coupling one classic album with a further disc of related content from that album. Storm Thorgerson has overseen the visual design, including new booklets for all the CDs, new artwork for the box sets and menus for the DVD content. Photographer Jill Furmanovsky, has edited books of original unseen photographs.

Pink Floyd collaborators have been in charge of digital remastering to the highest audio and audiovisual standards. Pink Floyd film archivist Lana Topham has supervised the painstaking restoration of many historic films from Pink Floyd's classic era, included in the Immersion box sets for The Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here. First to be available on 26 September 2011 will be: Expanded deluxe and special edition versions of The Dark Side Of The Moon, in a 6-disc Immersion box set and Experience 2-disc versions, as well as a collectors' vinyl LP and various digital formats. Plus 14 studio albums, digitally remastered will be available separately or as a box set.

On 7 November 2011, Phase 2 of the releases will include: Wish You Were Here Immersion 5-disc and Experience 2-disc editions, both of which will include bonus material from the band's 1974 Wembley dates, including a 20-minute tour de force live rendition of Shine On You Crazy Diamond, as well as a unique recording of Wish You Were Here featuring the legendary jazz violinist, Stephane Grappelli. A collectors' vinyl LP will also be available, as will various digital formats. Released simultaneously will be A Foot In The Door - The Best Of Pink Floyd, a collection of their most well known songs, contained on one album for the first time.

The long-awaited 5.1 version of Wish You Were Here, mixed by James Guthrie, will also be released in parallel via independent label Acoustic Sounds. The Wall, will be afforded the same exhaustive treatment on February 27, 2012, with deluxe packages including a 7-disc Immersion set and a 3-disc Experience edition. A collectors' vinyl LP will also be available. "

I pre-ordered my 'Immersion' Box Set versions of 'Dark Side' and 'Wish You Were Here' this morning. A bit pricey, but they are finally a decent effort at bringing some new stuff to longtime collectors, and 5 or 6 discs ain't bad. Some of the stuff hasn't even been bootlegged yet

Dark Side http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004ZNARH4
Wish You Were Here http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004ZNAUVW

I am so hoping that they will do a 'More' Immersion set. I would love to have a few discs of outtakes from those sessions!

There are cheaper editions - two discers with a live set with each recorded by the Beeb thats well worth hearing.

Thanks for the heads up. More expensive than I would have hoped, however!

Will keep an eye for the cheaper versions Nick mentioned.

DSOTM, WYWH and Pulse will be in the basket :¬)

6 cds plus a box cost to manufacture about £6.00 sale price £96.00 - thats not milking a cow that is an industrial sized dairy operation. Of course they have the cost of recording and producing the album to make back before they see a profit - oh! wait a minute...

Absolutely agree...this is a 'Kraft' style operation

The record company know that the Pink Floyd audience are always going to shell out, and are exploiting this.

I shall have no qualms in copying these, I've already paid for both the albums and CD's... ;)

12-05-2011, 08:59
Well as a long-time Floydian I very much doubt I will be sucked into the £96.00 boxset!! I already have 6 DSOTM's including the original Black Triangle Japan pressing and the MFSL - so this IMO is not worth the extra wonga they are charging

A cynic might say this is a real push to try and put DSOTM ahead of Thriller as the all time best selling album, as well as milking that cash cow - I wonder what the remaining band members make of it all? This smacks of Roger's profiteering to me as opposed to something DG would support.

(however I have been known to do U-Turns )

James Guthrie - isn't he the one who slaughtered DSOTM last time???????

What the fugg is wrong with the excellent Doug Sax remasters? Oh, I know, the Shine-On box set is twenty years old and they want to extract more dosh from gullible punters. Out takes are there because they weren't judged good enough for original release. I thought Doug still had all the analogue originals, certainly of DSOTM.. if he has, then all the new tinkering of original material will be of his transfers.

Having listened well to the beatles' remasters, i'm really not sure the final product is quite what the original team wanted back in the 60's. All this tinkering - and in the analogue domain as well where losses are inevitable - hmmmmm.......

MartinT
27-05-2011, 07:10
James Guthrie - isn't he the one who slaughtered DSOTM last time???????

If you mean the EMI DSOTM SACD then I don't understand. It is by far the best mastering of the album that I know, and I include the Mobile Fidelity LP in that assessment.

The SA-CD two channel layer sounded thick, clogged and "rubbery" to me and I can say this because I remember how clear and crystaline the Dolby A master-tape copy we had sounded. Those clock bells were hit by metal hammers you know, not velvet covered rubber... Despite coming supposedly from the Doug Sax digital masters, I prefer the 1993 issue... despite different CD issues of these having different hum levels

I always liked the slightly dead sound of the drums on 'Animals' - it'll be interesting to hear the new remaster as I always thought these were intentional - they seemed to be very much in keeping with the theme of the album.

I need to order 'More' again if the remasters this time are worth having!

If you haven't already, make sure you check out Floyd's official YouTube Channel. They are streaming the full 1974 Wembley Dark Side Of The Moon set, accompanied by a lot of the original concert projections and films (plus some abstract / new animations that fill the gaps when the focus would have been on the band). It's highly enjoyable if you've ever wondered what went on the projector back then (some of it has never been reused, AFAIK).

I did, plays perfect, no pops etc, the quality of the album pressings is a real eye opener, 9 copies, all 1st press, but a number of blemishes in the actual vinyl.

I now have 1 perfect copy and 1 back up, all the others have pressing faults, not scratches etc, just minor blemishes in the vinyl, maybe I am being too fussy.

I will also have a few of the PF reissue vinyl, just to save my originals for my pension

Don't assume all reissues are good. In most cases a mint original is best. Back to Black, MOV etc are a mixed bag often using poorer digital sources with the odd hidden gem. Stick to Warner USA, Speakers Corner, Pure Pleasure, Mo-Fi, Analogue productions and Boxstar for quality.

This thread makes me feel so much better .... :) .. whoever asked if we needed another Floyd re-issue haha! ... I have only the Immersions set, a very battered CD bought 2nd hand ... and an old non first press dodgy vinyl which I will be looking at very closely now to see if I deserve to treat myself to the new vinyl .... Roll on the 40th anniversary ... hehe ..

Oh .. and I just bought THIS (http://www.stratcat.biz/4035.shtml) ..... to stick into my Fender strat ...

Ooh, very nice. Now you just need to spend a lifetime learning to play in his gorgeous style ;)

The Wall on decent vinyl should be interesting. My original vinyl is TML pressed and sounds good because of it. The later EMI cuts weren't quite as crisp and well defined I thought.

Mine's TML too and sounds good.

Got my copy earlier in the week. Excellent pressing. Haven't heard any other vinyl versions but this does sound fantastic, easily better than the CD's I have (1993 Sax remaster, 2003 SACD).

Sorry to drag this thread back up, I was going to start a new thread, but thought I'd ask all you :)

Which pink floyd Vinyl should I buy? I'm after..........

DSOTM
Meddle
The wall
Wish you were here
Animals
Momentary lapse
Division bell

Problem is, there's so many versions of each album out there, which ones should sound best?
Please bear in mind I don't want to be spending £100's on each one.

How many do you want? Difficult call if you only want to buy one.

Of those listed, I can recommend:

DSOTM
Meddle
Wish You Were Here.

'Animals' is so-so and only really for completists, IMO. 'The Wall' was very much a concept album, which only worked when performed live with the stage theatrics (again IMO).

'Momentary Lapse ...' and 'The Division Bell' were the Floyd, post Waters, and again IMO were the Floyd just "turning the handle". :(

Not sure if this helps - but you did ask.

Since i refuse to buy 2nd hand Vinyl i wish they would re-issue the below on the black stuff:

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
A Saucerful of Secrets
More
Ummagumma
Atom Heart Mother
Meddle
Obscured by Clouds

However i think ive seen a new issue of 'Obscured By Clouds' somewhere :)

No, I think you misunderstood. It's not what albums should I buy, but which versions (remastered, original, Japanese.....etc) of the ones listed should I buy.
There's loads of different versions of each of the albums listed.

Oh sorry! Can't help you there, save to say that all Japanese pressings (either vinyl or CD) seem to be of the highest quality.

If you are talking CD's then in my experience remasters are always better than original issues.

However the cynic in me thinks that EMI are really 'milking' the Floyd cow as much as they can with all the reissues.

Only vinyl, F307 might have it right, I'm probably best with new vinyl, it doesn't matter how good the recording is, it's no good if it's scratched or crackly.

No! Animals is the best of the middle-period Floyd records IMHO - Charade you are, Barry! ;)

I was somewhat sceptical re the recent remasters but I think they are about the best I have heard to date, but I have not heard all the versions out there. I guess Japanese versions of the current releases would possibly be the best but again this is a bit of a guess.

I certainly thought that the Japanese versions of the King Crimson remasters, that I got from Andre awhile back were fantastic; as where the High Quality CDs too....

Looks like there isn't a Japanese remastered version, although I could be wrong, all the releases say they're either imported from the UK or US.

DSOTM ordered off an Amazon seller, price isn't too bad. The seller's making a fortune off me, but he's so bloody cheap. I mentioned his Ebay shop on another thread http://theartofsound.net/forum/showpost.php?p=328816&postcount=331

Of special mention, though, are two previous Dark Side of the Moons:

1) The 30th Anniversary EMI SACD - quite outstanding mastering and the best reproduction I've yet heard from the SACD layer. Knocks previous Mo-Fi LPs into a cocked hat.

2) The Alan Parsons quadraphonic mix on DVD-A, notable for its different sound compared with the SACD but equally interesting. Available only on the torrents.

Hi Martin

I have the EMI SACD and I agree it is very good but unlike you I have not compared it to anything else.

Not heard the Alan Parsons version. I don't do downloads and I was not going to spend £100 to hear it by buying the Dark Side box set; shame as I would love to hear it.

You recently bought the SACD of Wish You Were Here, how does it fair compared to other versions?

MartinT

I think the SACD of WYWH is all I could have hoped for, again with excellent mastering. The bass in Welcome to the Machine is particularly impressive. My early CD is very poor by comparison.

I would like an SACD of Animals and then I'd be content.
