Preamp: EAR 912 Tube Control Center includes a great RIAA and SUTs. Poweramps: EAR 549 Monos 200W

A stupid question to ask someone about their rare and expensive kit, but what are the 549s like? I know/knew someone who had a pair for sale for about the price of these 519s but the 3 degrees of separation between me and him seems to be broken.. should I try harder or let it go?

Always fancied trying some out but then perhaps the extra power is at the expense of finesse compared to say 519s? I did ask an ebay seller for his opinion some time after he sold a pair but he thought they were quite boring...
