Sony Nex Camera

Hi,

I am going to buy a new digital camera. Although an SLR appeals to me the size and weight does not, as it will be used mostly for when I travel.

Have looked at a Sony NEX 5 with pancake and short zoom lenses. Has anyone any experience with these cameras. Any info would be most welcome.

John, I recently bought myself a 'bridge' camera, to be precise a Panasonic Lumix FZ45 it is the best of both worlds but lightish and easier to use. I was going to go for a new digital slim line jobby but nowadays the new output of digitals don't have a view finder and relying on the LED screen for picture composing is annoying in bright sunlight. I've been on hols, within the UK, with mine and have no complaints so far, fingers crossed. Got mine from Amazon, good turnaround with delivery etc. I'm not a professional so I would seek additional advice on the subject, just saying how it is for me.

Before you buy from the Panasonic shop do check out Amazon, also I found that the Amazon, Jessops etc charged big bucks for the picture card, rechargeable battery etc which you have to take into account, also the cost of a carry case!!!

I think that the major manufacturers also have 'bridge' cameras in their portfolios so you do have choice.

For that on the spot photo shot most of us carry mobile (cell) phones with pretty good camera and video facilities.

By the way I no longer have to cart my video camera as well on hols because my Panny FZ45 does video with sound and I'm sure that the other makes will do this as well.

I'd stick with the first option ... The fz pannys like all hybrids have very small sensors similar in size to most compact cameras
Compacts and super zoom hybrids are ok, but the small sensors let then down when it comes to taking good photos ... They are definately jack of all trades, master of none type kit!

The Sony has a sensor the same size as most slr cameras ... Much bigger ... Bigger sensor, better picture quality!

If you want a panny ... Look at the "g series" modles!

Tomorrow will be in Poole, there is a Sony shop in the High St. I'll look in there as don't fancy the usual suspects, you know who they are, Jops, Crrys, etc. Thanks.

Have a look for an independent camera shop ... You have more chance of finding someone who knows what they are talking about ...

Hamish, I know what you mean. I've probably forgotten more about the technical side of photography than some of the sales staff in the usual suspects, you know who they are. Bunch of t*****s. I did look at a Sony in Jessops of Yeovil, and when I asked about manual modes and f.stops the sales person wondered wtf I was talking about :lolsign:
