Attitude to work

I would like to know your perception of the working world. Personally I love it and would hate to give it up. I guess I am lucky that every day is different and I work from home. Dont get me wrong, I have bad days and sometimes get stressed out but generally speaking its ok and often fun.
So is work something you have to do or is it enjoyable? Lets have your views.

I had 4 or 5 months being self employed in 2009 and loved it. Sadly the way the company got paid for my services by the government was pulled and the job ceased to exist. They, very kindly offered me a job, and I am still here now.

I feel that it is hard to trust employers. They want a lot from you, but couldn't give a toss about you the person.

I hate it but can't do without it. The one i'm in now (Even though people seem to take their hats off to me doing what i do) i detest it & am so desperate to get out of it.This week is crunch time & considering walking before the weekend.

I hate standard jobs woking for a rate of pay, work hard or slow you still get the same rate of pay per hour hence come out with the same measly wage packet at the end of the month 160 hours of your life wasted, getting no where in your life but to pay the same old bills, rationing yourself to spending money like a kid.. Where as being self employed, you work hard get more have better things in life.

Nine years ago I was a high flyer, travelled an awful lot on business, stressed to hell juggling being a single parent and being at the beck and call of my employer and thoroughly miserable.

Now I do something that I enjoy, I'm proud of the infrastructure I've built, I earn half what I earned back then and I am far, far happier. Work keeps my brain active and I am proof, if needed, that job satisfaction is worth a lot more than money.

I had a conversation last week with a recruitment agency and they asked what salary level I was expecting. I told them I would be happy for £40k a year doing a job I enjoy and £150k a year working for another arsehole. Made perfect sense to me, but the pumped up idiot at the end of the phone didn't get that philosophy :scratch:

I have been blessed throughout my working life to have had jobs that I loved doing (though there was the odd bad day here and there) Not all of those employers have been great to work for or with, some terrible and some a joy. Some I thought were friends, those being the ones who 'shafted me right royally'....yeah you who are reading this now (probably) you know who you are.

Nearly three years ago I thought that that was that, I was stuffed in my early 40's with no future, jobs are not easy to get and I failed miserably to find one until one found me :)

Anyway I am in a great job now I love, working in a bookshop which allows me to do other things I also love doing but don't earn anything for doing (my choice).

I have a great work life balance now and enjoy my current life. I am on much less money than I was but I have adjusted to that and just have to work round it.

I love what I do I actully get opportunity to make a difference in peoples lives but their are times when it can also really wind me up with the level of expecations it can put on people
For me having a sense of purpose/meaning is something I value and have done my best to create

Its a rare one that loves their work these days. When I started work, I hated time off for any reason but at the end of my working life the opposite was true. Unfortunately I dont think its going to get any better.

I've been self employed for nearly 23 years, i'm just trying to ride out this recession, managed it with the last one not so sure about this one, its getting harder and harder to get a decent rate from the jobs i'm doing as i have to keep cutting the prices to get and keep the work and what with the fuel prices :doh: :(, i seem to be earning less now than i was 10 years ago and i know i'm not alone, at least the money is garanteed from my mostly local authority clients

If i came into money then yes i would give it up tommorow for the stress relief alone without all the aches and pains, but to change my job i don't know really what i would do, being the boss has it's merits if you don't mind the hours it's certainly not 9-5 with your money garanteed in the bank each and every month.

I can't really complain about work as i don't. But the last couple of jobs i had i was severely taken the p*ss out of wages wise & to top the lot i was working with a load of pricks. A couple of people were ok but most i wouldn't have given the time of day :rolleyes:

For me, working from home has changed everything for the better. I mostly do the evening meal as my wife works hard and puts up with my limited cooking skills. I dont leave in the morning until the rush hour traffic has died down but I start doing reports and things from 7.30am.
If you have the opportunity to work from home then do it!

In the current climate, whether I like my job or not (I do, mostly) is largely irrelevant to me - I'm just bloody grateful to have one - I reckon finding another at my current package would be nigh on impossible, and even finding one earning half what I do now would be a challenge. Like waking up each morning and realising I and my loved ones are still here, I thank my lucky stars every day for what I have.

I hate my job, well I hate the parts that I cant control and "micro" management that is forced on me in my current role.

I manage a team of 20 and I have say I really dont like half of them.

Some of them I think I will be friends with for years to come.

I had an interview last week and I did so badly at it as I was so set on getting out of my current job I couldnt perform well in it.

I come home from work and I'm counting the hours down till I have to go back in and I wake up thinking what shite am I going to have to put with today ?

I love Friday nights thats the best night of the week, we get home we have a nice tea and we can relax watching our programmes together (Castle/Criminal Minds/Fringe/House) and we relax.
Come sunday night and the dreed is there.

I used to work for Ferranti years ago and loved my job and the people I worked with were great and treated you with respect but that seems to have gone. Your a position not a person anymore and you can be replaced.

My pet hate is the term 'Human Resources':steam:
So what hapened to 'Personnel' It seems that employees are now just a resource to be used and abused and then discarded when no longer of use. No more thought of than any other 'resource'.

If there is one thing I don't miss its petty office squabbles and cliques. I have been dragged into many disputes in past jobs and had to hand out my fair share of bollickings.

Now I only have the cat to shout at.

We have just finished out first full year as an ltd ...
Loved every minute of it (Even dealing with David Brook ;) ) we have turned over enough money for me to have earned a wage that has been enough to support (just about) my self and for the last 6 months Hannah without to much worry (just after Xmas and the begining April things got hairy, but we had enough money in the company to support it ... We get new clients moat weeks now ... Admitedly a lot through an agency ... But a lo off our own back! Despite the ressesion the company apears to still be growing... It's very stressful, very hard work, but actually I find it only makes me work better! I love it, and feel so greatful to be in a position to do what I love and spend every day learning new skills in web design and development ... And with the forum (although it doesn't make any money) I'm learning and improving my photography seemingly quite quickly too!

Nope, still do a day a week in the shop Martin ... To be honest it's becoming more and more of a pain in the ass ... I usually have to make up for the lost hours ... But I just can't let go... It's just an enjoyable thing to do a day a week ... I'll have to pack it in soon I suppose ... the perks of having a direct conection to the trade are quite a sticking point too ;)

You shouldn't feel inadequate ... This is a factor that seems to put people off photography forums ... I can assure you we are all very welcoming and happy to help should you need it! ... It's really a great way to learn and get to grips with kit and what you want to achieve etc ... I learn new stuff on there most days ... Besides, some one of our members joined his only camera was an iPhone ... We have beginners to pros ... No one is judged, just helped to learn more and get better! And if for nothing else, we have Photographers from oz, south Africa, the west coast of USA, Germany ... All over so there is lot of interesting and inspiring photography to look at!

I have worked for 2 companies since 1974. First one clothed, fed and housed me, all I had to do was train to kill people and get an apprenticeship and fix stuff that was designed to kill people for 9 years along with overseas holidays one lasting 3 years.

2nd job was basically the same without the food, clothes and housing and less money initially for the company that built the stuff I worked on in the 1st job. Still with them and working on stuff that is designed to save lives now, so it's all good.

The work is interesting as it's development and cutting edge stuff is always a challenge. Money is not great but I'm comfortable. A big plus I got away from the UK and emigrated to Oz.

Well done Hamish and Good luck in the future, i would love to get into photography a bit more but as always its time and too many hobbies on the go already so i just tend to point and shoot on Auto with a selection of different lenses
