Used to play bass in a band. Not a bad guitarist either. Rhythm mainly, the desire to be a lead guitarist left me during my teens. But bass is my instrument :)

i bought a guitar 6 years ago.. i learnt about 10 cords but still stuggle to get a tune...
my daughter is a wiz with the piano, violin etc..

thats what i normally compare my hi fi to..

alway amazes me that not every one likes lowthers.. as to me they sound so real when well implemented

I agree, Steve. The problem is not many people can handle genuine realistic sound with hi-fi and prefer something that sounds 'nicer'. The dynamic impact of real instruments is quite shocking and almost impossible for conventional drive units on speakers to reproduce, so what you end up with is a more palatable, rounded-off, rendition of the sound.

Playing a musical instrument I guess introduces you to how real instruments ACTUALLY sound, and it's not the type of sound people imagine or what most hi-fi systems reproduce!

I used to be 1st flute in a good youth orchestra but the skills have passed me by although after half an hours practice I can start to do it again. I love early (medieval) music and every now and then get my recorders (descant, treble and tenor) out to play a bit, purely you'll understand for private and personal pleasure only ;)

It's a nice instrument to play, running costs in terms of reeds, re corking etc can be a bit steep but it's worth it.

I been playig for years and used to go to a lot of concerts around 100 a year at least; so my reference point has always been live music and agree most Hifi very far removed from this

I wish I could play the guitar. I played the cello badly when I was a kid but never got into it because it wasn't an instrument that featured in music I liked. In recent years I've got into bluegrass, flat-picking and country guitar... when I find more time to fit such endeavours in I'd love to be able to learn and play a bit for my own pleasure...

For me its was learning to play Django tunes and playing with friends that opened things up a bit, just go for it if you have the time it changed for me how I appreciate music

I play the keyboard, piano, slight touch of the guitar and a little drums. I prefer the challenge of recording and mastering rather than the playing itself though.

I think my interest in recording and archiving stuff is driven by an acceptance that while I love music, I can't play it. I guess I'm trying to capture and preserve the creative element. You're lucky to have both!

I play the trumpet, the guitar and the piano.
I sometimes grab my percussion, my mandolin, one of my 6 flutes but that doesn't realy sound that good.
Trumpet is my main instrument even though I played guitar since the early 70's and the horn only the last 5 years.
Piano is mainly played to understand pieces and to interpritate into other instruments.

I also do mastering and did since the late 70's.
The mastering started with a radio broadcasting technician job where I was put on location to do master recordings of Live & Studio events.
Today I only do it for fun in agreements with musicians not to use material comercial and not to share material.

When I do a master recording I use R2R as main recorder for the quality and digital 24/96 as back up for the security.

Cheers, although I rarely merge the two sides (hi-fi and studio). Coincidentally I got into hi-fi the same year as I taught myself to play the keyboard, 1987 - I was only eleven. :) The two elements grew side by side although my preference shifted from one to the other intermittently depending on which was most prominent in my social life. I started writing music with my best mate Andrew when we were 12 and we were recording from a couple of years later (we gigged at school :)).

Almost twenty years later and we still collaborate from time to time, but it's largely a rare affair. However next week we're off to Andrew's cousins place in deepest Norfolk to drink heavily and get some music down. What'll actually happen is we'll get seriously fecked on ale, play about half a dozen bars each and then watch some Family Guy. :lol:
