Firefox 4

I just had a prompt to update Firefox to V3 XXXX which i duly did & having updated i was taken to a page where i could download Firefox V4 :scratch:

A bit dumb but what the heck :lol: It promised increased browser speed, they are in no way kidding - it's like lightning!

No idea why the heck Firefox V4 wasn't mentioned though but what the hell :eyebrows:

Best upgrade in a good while :cool:

I used Firefox 4 for Mac OSX for maybe 6 months (I installed the Beta as soon as it came out) but I've found it's become sluggish / entry into text boxes very slow of late, so I went back to Chrome, and now to Safari, which is excellent, way better than the Safari of old, and it had ad-blocker extensions as well (the lack-of being the reason I ditched Safari in the first place).

Firefox for Windows / Firefox on your machine maybe a lot better than on mine, I was well pleased when I first started using it. Maybe it was all those extensions I was using :doh:

Well Nick even though we changed servers recently it hadn't really improved things speed wise a good 70% of the time for me, in fact a lot seemed slower tbh :rolleyes:

However, now things are really flying :eyebrows: Page loading is very fast indeed, ok, so i'm not sure how the site is behaving right now as i haven't seen it slow. If this is anything to go by & i'm assuming things are average then this is very very fast indeed :)

Took me a while to find a few odds & sods that i wanted though but all there now :cool:

The new server is very quick, I'm glad you're getting the full affect of the upgrade now! Just goes to show what a difference a browser can make too.

Aye, windoze XP Pro (SP2) here, i refused to install SP3 when i heard lots of problems.

Mark, it may be worth considering putting SP3 on now, as Microsoft no longer supports SP2, whereas SP3 will be supported until April 2014. Any bugs that were there have been ironed out a long time ago. It really could be time now as you are quite vulnerable with SP2?

If you think about doing it, maybe create an Image first with something like Acronis, just in case it goes funky, but I personally wouldn't be comfortable running SP2 anymore..... just a thought :scratch:

Don't forget that Firefox can send information about your location and IP address to Google. To disable this:


* In the URL bar, type about:config
* Type geo.enabled
* Double click on the geo.enabled preference
* Location-Aware Browsing is now disabled

I find that Internet Explorer 9 64-bit is the fastest and nicest browser of them all, closely followed by Google Chrome.

Safari on the iPad is not bad, either. Opera on my HTC phone is decidedly odd but does its best.

In all honesty, it has one superb function: as a magazine reader using Zinio, it's superb. I now get all my mags delivered electronically and I do like using the iPad to read them.

I'd really like one, for surfing, reading and as a media controller - a bit too pricy for me at the moment though, given it's not yet a laptop replacement. Safari on OSX is also very good, I guess with Windows it may come with more bloat though.

The iPad has its place, and for certain things it's excellent. It will never be (in its current form) a laptop replacement, though. For a start, it's handling of network folders and documents is pants, even with support apps to help it along. Also, you need another computer with iTunes (spit) to just get it going out of the box!

Forgot to say - PS Audio are doing some seriously nice stuff using iPhone and iPad as a media controller. All their own software and mighty impressive.

Cheers Tim, i will give it some serious thought :) It's nice to only get that damn microsoft malicious software removal tool & only once a month (it get's thrown out). I should be pretty well protected as i have inbuilt protection from the router, but i know where you are coming from ;)

Typed in the first line & got a new window asking me if i knew what i was doing :scratch: :eyebrows: Hit the "yes i'll be carefull" & then went down the huge list until i found geo.enabled which was set to true, double clicked it & it's now set to false...

Mark, that's dangerous. A router's protection (even with NATting and a firewall) will not protect you from malicious software, especially when delivered either as e-mail or a carefully crafted web page. You need proper up to date anti-virus software, and the MS malicious software removal tool does no harm and has saved many a computer.

Since you are using XP you are even more at risk as it is way more exposed than Windows 7. Just worried for you, mate.
