View Full Version : Get yer Turntables out for the lads Competition
Right then, up until the end of the month (and maybe beyond), I am running a photography competition for all turntable owners, simply post the best picture you have or can take of your T/T in action, I will be deducting points for background mess such as bottles of aftershave and pots of tea or general clutter, feel free to edit your picture after shooting as it will be worth the effort. I am not asking permission to use the photos like last time so post away please, I would prefer see the turntable actually playing a record if possible.
Prizes as follows, the winner gets to choose his/her prize and so on down the pecking order:-
1. Blue Horizon Record Mat
2. 20 LP Inner Sleeves
3. Bottle of Record Cleaning Fluid
4. Gold Plated HDMI Cable 2 Metres
5. 2 Metres of Belden 19364 Mains Cable
6. Silver Plated UK Mains Plug
7. Isoclean Power 13 Amp Audio Grade Fuse
8. Martin Kaiser Silver Plated IEC Connector
9. 5 x De-Oxit Wipes
Get snapping guys and may the best picture win.

P.S How do you find the Oyaide weight with the MN platter?
Hey Adam, you need an SL1360 to add to the collection :)
Adam,
Any Technics is fine, yours does look rather cool I must admit, maybe you could entice Mr Price back as I miss him dearly, is he reviewing the Time Step Technics this month or is Raf doing it would you know, that would be a damn fine pic. The 309 is adored here don't you know. :)

Hi Ian,
Nice! How are you finding the Michell clamp? :)
Marco.
Good evening Marco!!!!
The clamp is ace! I'm really impressed at the overall sound even with the basic cartridge I'm using at the mo (Goldring Elektra). I'm hoping that the 103 is back soon (Been nearly 3 months now).
I've been using the clamp and achromat since Jan. I was pleased when I ready the thread you started about the clamp. I must admit, I prefer the look of yours~!! ;)
Got the cable ready to rewire the arm (which will definitely be sorted before the Denon comes back!!) After that, just the feet then i'll sit back and listen for a bit before I tackle the phono stage. Currently I've got the phono stage from the Merdian 200 series pre running stand alone with a decent PSU but I think i'll end up going valve :eyebrows:
I need to sort this blue led fetish out! I've even been messing with filters on the SB display!!!

To be honnest mate if you want a full pic of a deck they are all gonna look kinda the same, there's only so many angles you can shoot from, and most of them are gonna look like a cheap snap shot of the TT, I'm gonna try to get a really long exposure with the arm in motion over the vinyl, get more of the deck in too.

As porntastic as this thread is turning out to be, it would be really cool to see a thread of all AOS members' turntables, Technics and otherwise. Does one already exist?
Good work, looks more attractive than other MN platters l have seen
Churz, Andy. I think that the bonded copper mat helps, too. The edge that shows around the rim of the platter looks quite attractive... The other thing is that MK5 Techies, with their gloss-black tops and blue lights, look nicer than the more common and slightly prosaic looking MK IIs :)
Biff, we could quite easily rename the thread and make that happen. I'm not sure what David's idea was when he started the thread.
What do you think, David?
Marco.
Get yer TT's Out For The Lads sounds damn fine to me and adds more members contributions too although KiIng will probably win as I remember his TT's look marvellous.
Well there you have it, folks, so go for it! :)

No, not exactly ;) It's this (http://www.discogs.com/Higher-Intelligence-Agency-The--Pete-Namlook-SHADO-EP/release/74067), which is kind of what you might call a tribute to the series if you like.

Lovely pics and collection of Techies, Neil! :respect:
Is that a Clavis strapped to the SME V on the blue Techy? It's one of the few Lyras I like!
Interesting putting a Frog on a Jelco.... :eyebrows: Not sure that's a combo I'd have gone for. Have you tried the Frog on the SME V? That should work really well.

Yes its a very low hours Clavis. Nice when you get it right but its an awkward customer that really sounds best using a MM stage and a quality SUT ime.
I think you are right about the Frog (yes sounds great on my Graham and on the SME), though its not too bad on it. I have a heavy Ortofon 7500 that should work quite well on the Jelco. Yes there is a Mike New bearing in the equation ;)
Regards D S D L
The Frog works really well on the SME V - I've heard that combo, and it's rather good! Loads of detail and finesse.
The Jelco only really comes into its own with high-quality MMs (like the current Nagaokas), or ideally, low-compliance MCs, such a the DL-103, SPU, EMT, etc. You also need to hear it with a top-notch aftermarket headshell fitted, such as the Oyaide, or the high-mass Ortofons and Audio Technicas, which are available.
That makes a massive difference! The stock headshell is quite poor, IMO, and isn't representative of the superlative engineering of the rest of the arm.
So which T/T has been given the (huge) advantage of the MN bearing? ;)
Marco.

I am not sure I agree entirely re the Jelco. It has sounded pretty good with a couple of the MC's I own...not the Clavis though. The VDH Frog is a Gold :) which is very tasty indeed.
If I start messing with head shells this will never get done ;) + the cost is a tad high for the ones you mention. I do have a few Sumiko's though; not tried those yet.
The blue deck has the MN bearing.

Ok, I gotta admit to somet here, I've never heard a Dynavector arm...
I've admired them from afar over the years, especially as they appear as if they might be a lost limb from a mini T800 Terminator (I'll be baack!!!!). There's a lot going on within the design of this arm and it appears to push aside all known conventions in tonearm design. I'm guessing it is not a massy arm, but it sure as hell looks as if it could support a Rolls Royce Ghost, and what's with all the knobbly knobs and sticky out bits???
So, in your own words, tell me what the DV is all about... On your marks... Get set... GO!!!!
Think of it as two arms, one mounted on the end of the other. The massive gantry (and it sure as hell is a massy arm) deals only with horizontal motion, is magnetically damped and is counterbalanced with the big weight on the end. The small arm is very light, deals only with vertical motion, has its tracking weight set by a spring and is counterbalanced with the small weight on its end.
The result is a massy arm with huge damping to give the horizontal motion a feeling of being set in concrete - at least as far as the cartridge is concerned at groove velocities. The vertical motion is so sprightly, in comparison, that it tracks warped records with ease, in fact laughs them off. There is *nothing* in my collection that it cannot track.
That's all for now, but feel free to ask more questions.

It shouldn't be too hard to get one. Its a TD160 put in a new plinth with a new top face plate and a new arm plate. The arm is a Rega R200, totally rewired with silver plated litz, with a Denon DL304. I got everything for peanuts, apart from the DL304 which I got for cheap enough considering how much it is new.
I'll take some decent pics of the whole system when my gainclone monoblocks are finished.

Yes it's a 930. It dates from 1963 and would originally have had an Ortofon 229 arm but was changed for an EMT 929 sometime in the 70's

Nice one, Alfie - looking good! How's the SPU sounding now that it's bedded in? :)
Marco.
It's sounding very nice mate :) But to be honest the DP-6000 still needs some work & I've not found my final SUT yet!
The SPU Royal has a Replicant 100 stylus which seems quite sensitive to setup & as you know there's very little adjustment with a GM SPU! I've been experimenting with spindle to pivot dimentions. The FR64 STP is 230mm but the SPU headshell puts the stylus a couple of mm infront of my downloaded arc protractor so setting the STP at 232mm seems to make a difference, but which is better i'm not yet sure!
The DP-6000 may still yet get re-plinthed & needs new footers & the mat sorting out!
SUT's I've been playing with alot for the last month, Guy sent me up 6 or 7 different SUT's to try with the Royal, mostly vintage MIC transformers & I've also played with both A23 trannies. Ortofon recomend >100 ohms but I seem to be finding better results at about 30 to 60 ohms! The Altec Peerless 4722 at about 38 ohms seem to suit the Royal very well & I'm looking around for a pair! The Hashimoto transformers look quite interesting to if a little expensive to pick up a pair just to try. I might yet write a little up about the SUT trials.
It soon became obvious that the quality of the transformer i.e. winding, core etc make as much difference as as matching the load!
Anyway, perhaps this is not the right thread for all of this ;)

Hi Martin
Very different to each other. The Oracle is open and airy while the SME 20 with the Graham on it is more weighty with better bass than the Oracle but lacks the magical delicacy of the Delphi. Overall though I would have to say the SME is the better (as an all rounder) deck but only just.

Hi Marco,
Oh….sexy pics? I love a very different kind of them which can provoke me with a sense of excitements, no wet dreams though. Hehe!
The mat is the Funk Firm Acromat on the Denon. It offers a more natural sound than the original, with darker background and better transparency. The SDS mat is more dynamic and lively in comparisons, a vivid kind of presentation
Here is a potential giant killer but badly needs a better arm and plinth. I am going to install a Hadcock GH228 on it, with which the mounting distance is 212.8mm and the L75 arm is 210.8mm.

Hi David,
I think what you need is a switch box but it will definitely compromise the sound to some extend. It is your call, convenience or sound quality?

Thanks for asking that Marco! I did suspect it was a achromat with the centre label removed. The DP-80 was a generation later than my DP-6000 & built on the strengths of the 6000. One of the main differences was the platter though! The DP-80 had a split platter to help cancel external vibrations & is infact flat & not stepped like my DP-6000 platter.
The Achromat does look favourite though! I just need to talk to Arthur at Funk & find out how they cut/turn them down, then I'll get the centre cut out of mine!

A PROPER WORKING Legend ain't no fruitbox guv'nor. Quite the opposite in fact, very lively yet with refinement almost in the best PT class. Some of these later AR decks had poor bearings though, and I believe the model-name was changed when the bearing was re-worked. the early decks looking like this had severely wobbly bearings and the sonics were extremely poor, much worse than any rega or pro-ject IMO. A later one was in a different league entirely I thought and an EB101 is an extremely good value used deck I think - prices were around a ton for ages on these latter decks - far better than a knackered old Ariston IMO.

It's a TTWeights Classic (aluminum) record weight. I love it; but, if your cart is especially wide, this is not the one for you. They probably have other options in that case and/or another company entirely would be a good choice.

Thanks for the compliments you guys. The 2M is the best MM I've ever heard (and that's quite a few I can tell you). The bass is rock solid and tuneful (something not heard by me from any other combination that I've had). The mids sound just right and the treble is, on the right recording, good. Compared to the Lyra it's not as brightly lit but detail is just as good. I love it. Before I had the Tecchie/SME V some recordings never sounded 'right', if you get my drift. With this combination most, and I mean most recordings sound bloody marvellous. You know the saying 'knocks CD into a cocked hat' well it does, and then some.

Yeah, I would say it does, it's not 'in yer face' like the Lyra. And is it musical?I think so; but I think it's the whole sum of my system which makes it so. The trouble with us audiothingies is we are never quite satisfied with what we have, are we! So we keep looking for something that we think is there but we don't know where it is; if you get my drift. If you like the sound of your system then you are doing well. :lolsign:

Funnily enough l love the sound of my lightly tweaked Techie, as the sound is so musical, l would like to transfer this musicality to my second Techie/ SME V, so l will post nearer the date of purchase for new cartridges:)

Hi Chris,
It certainly is no slouch. It has that MC quality of transparency (well almost) and it would be difficult to say it was either a MM or MC in a blind listening test, IMHO. It compares very well with much more expensive carts IMLE.

Well yes, around 60 smackeroos. Of course you could always paint it yourself, after removing it. Or ask your local, friendly paint shop, if you have one, to paint if for you.

Hey, that's some trick of the light  I've seen those face plate covers but what I like is the white look with the printing as well - the industrial look. Why didn't they do a white vesion  I need a negative Technics to fit in my slowly developing, missus approved, grey/white room

Hi Simon,
Nice pics (and room) - you need to put those in The Gallery (if you haven't already done so) :)
Also nice to see a decent record collection, as well as a good hi-fi system! ;)

My 1210 with a Jelco and my go to cartridge Technics MC 310 with 1/2"adapter.
This p-mount Moving Coil cartridge was originally designed for the Technics SL-10. It was recently given the Ruby Tip Sound Smith treatment.

Everyone talks about getting the synergy right with a 1200 , i never thought until recently about using one of the old vintage Technics cartridges , I'm thinking the 310mc will be very good indeed in the stock techy arm .

<snip> Right then, up until the end of the month (and maybe beyond), I am running a photography competition for all turntable owners, simply post the best picture you have or can take of your T/T in action
So when is it ending then? It's been a while :lolsign:

This is the shortened answer:-
New website done by Hamish (http://www.f8creates.com/) and associates, ready to launch, problem, I have over 700 products to put on, not ready as take ages to do, I also have another business venture starting 01.06.11 which I need to get ready, I also build power cords for a living as well as umpteen other things, result is I am letting the comp. go on for a bit longer as I like photos of TT's anyway as I am a sad twat.
OK..........:ner:

LAST DAY FOR POSTING OF PHOTOS IS 31.05.11 and the winners will be notified 01.06.11, the first winner will get a pm from me telling him of his good fortune, once he has replied with his choice of prize from the list originally posted I will knock it off the list on the thread and pm 2nd prize winner etc, etc, hope that is fair, rather than give somebdy a prize they may not want they can choose their own from the list.
Is there the slightest chance David Price would send pictures of his vinyl spinners for us mere mortals to peep at? The Marantz would be nice to see. Would you give him a nudge Adam?

Can I put my vote in for continuing the pic posting indefinitely, even after the comp is over? No doubt, there will be new (and old) members who can contribute greatly to our need to shamelessly salivate over these objects of desire.

Before the retip job by Soundsmith it was a little to laid back for my taste. Now it is clean and smooth without being bright, a perfect match for my system.

good idea, when we change TT's as we often do then new pics can be added as well as new members pics also

Hi Dave,
As promised, a few more pictures of the Onkyo PX-100M - I've decided that a career in photography would not be a good idea - I certainly think they are better than my original efforts, however, and I have tried some arty 'on the angle' close-up shots! ()
Hope they fit the bill, anyway:

Hi Martin,
'It's great to see another Dynavector arm in action, Paul. Is that a DV-501?'
It's a 505, but both the 5 and 1 are of a similar vintage and finish. Interestingly, I have tracked down 8 other owners of the Onkyo PX-100M, and several use or have used Dynavector arms. Indeed, when I got hold of my unit, the original armboard was set up for a 501.
Paul , that's disturbingly attractive , be honest now , do you kiss it goodnight
Chris/Marco - I haven't started kissing my beloved...errm...I mean turntable, but a loving pat at the end of an evening sesh ( ) is often given :lolsign: There we are, tone suitably lowered!
Cheers,
