Hi,
I have been meaning to introduce myself for sometime, however as usual 'life got in the way'!
I became interested in 'music reproduction' equipment in my teens because of my interset in listening to 'jazz'.
Unfortunately I could not actually afford to buy anything remotely resembling 'high fidelity' equipment until the mid 70's when I purchased my first Quad system, which I connected to a pair of unused but s/h B & W DM 70's. I remember the first time I switched that system on, it was nothing short of magical. I still have the s/h Thorens TD124 that I purchased at the same time which was complete with an SME 3009 arm for £60:00.
Today I listen via a an 'old' Linn system - Kremlin, Kairn, Klouts & Keilidhs however sometimes I experience that same 'magic' when I play a particularly well recorded album.

Hi Mike, welcome to AoS :) I think i detect a bit of brand loyalty there :eyebrows: Nothing wrong with that though, well just as long as you don't get in a slanging match with a Naim owner :lolsign: Seriously though there are allsorts on here including those that do like Naim, me, i like what goes together to make a system i'm happy with...

No 'slanging' matches from me, for me it's about the music, not the kit, I would much prefer to spend what little I have these days buying the thyings I could not afford when I was younger.

Thorens 124/SME into some B&W DM70s via Quad electronics! Sigh - that's good in my book.

Though I usually use my Garrard 301 I do at special occasions start my TD 124 - some of my Classical records simply just sound better with the TD 124 and my Ortofon SPU gold - and the TD 124 is such a great looking deck - its like the looks of it ads a little extra to the pleasure of music listening

I don't know much about Linn but I like the names you listed - sounds like political party organs within the Kremlin - cool

I did have some sweet sounding Quad 303/33/fm3 but it did not have the power reserve that I needed so later I got the mono 510 from QUAD - great power amps with transformers at the speaker out - so you could use 2-65 ohms speakers and get the same powerfull 135 Watts - Promised my selv I would never sell them but when I got my tube power amps I finally sold them to my best friend and we made a deal that if he was ever going to sell them it would be back to me

British gear certainly have something special - what music do you listen to?

Nowt wrong with ACTIVE Keilidh's in my book, as long as they have the Ku-Stone bases and possibly some better speaker cables than the heavily disguised "79 strand style" Linn sell for huge prices ;)

As and when you can afford to do this, the Kairn could be very usefully upgraded to something more open and genuinely transparent to the source signal - the Keilidh's will easily reproduce this, either by a 5103? set to stereo, or by something away from Linn IMO. If you're using the old "black" interconnects too, the Mark Grants we all rate here will be a sonic improvement too.

Forgive the unwanted "advice" above, but I do have extensive experience of keilidh's and even owned a late set in passive form for a while (little to no midrange used this way, sadly). Enjoy the forum in any case :lolsign:
