View Full Version : It's a sin!

I thought it was about time i made my thoughts known on the general forum of the performance improvement implemented by the inclusion of a PS Audio P600 Power Plant ;) As i say, it's a sin :eyebrows:

The most obvious thing is that there is no & i mean none, zero, zip, nada mains interference on anything i listen to nowadays. Before even with a dedicated mains spur i was still getting pops & bangs when things such as the refridgerator or even lights where switched on or off  Now not a damn thing, all there is is an inky black background of pure silence :)

I'm sure the noise floor has dropped but i have no way of proving this  What i can add though is that you really don't need to fuss too much about the quality of mains that any power amps are receiving, it's the front end that is the important bit! All 3 of my power amps are fed directly off of the 27Amp spur, but all the front end kit (check my signature) is fed via the P600.

It looks as though it's more important to keep the crappy mains out of the front end which is obviously at a lower signal level, IE line level :)

This is good as it means that you can connect up a power amp directly to the mains & still get amazing performance simply because the front end isn't suffering ;)

I guess that's about me done on what i'd describe as one of the biggest upgrades i have ever experienced, i'm still listening to find that first pop or click but it hasn't happened. Something tells me i'll be waiting a bloody long time :lolsign:

In the mean time i just find it hard to describe what clean mains power does for a system apart from remove those annoying pops & clicks. Well things just get more believable & there is more of a 3D image.

Stuff it, i'm getting back to doing what i do best - chilling :eyebrows: If you aren't prepared to take my word for it then try out a Power Plant & see if you are going to yack away or listen to the music :)

70W & getting warm to say the least...

This model may run hot & use some juice but consider how much it costs to put on a few tracks in a pub on a jukebox & all of a sudden you won't worry :eyebrows:

Bests to all & have a good weekend :)

Wow it looks impressive/expensive!

To be honest I have never experienced pops and crackels on my system. I suspect the hicap has something to do with it?

Something to be grateful for I suppose.

I just found one on fleabay that went for £450. That doesn't seem too bad?

Definately not bad, i payed more for mine & i'm quite happy about it :eyebrows:

I just listen to music these days :lolsign: It's not just the fact that it gets rid of annoying stuff, it actually appears to lower the whole noise floor of the front end, IE CD players/transports, pre amps etc - everything that is powered by the thing at the end of the day ;)

Yesh, but you do realise that it's because the Power Plant is sitting on your 'fridge' (resplendent in cool 'Malenfant aquamarine'), and the mystical audio properties it imparts on all it touches, that it works so well? ;)

This might sound strnge but also stick a decent mains cable on this and it take it up another few steps I know idea why this happens but really worth a try.
The P600 is a bit of a beast to lift and as you found out bloody hot
I remember a few years back when I had the P500 my friend came round whos a sceptic and it was so easy to clearly demostrate its effect, yet when I went up to his home it made no difference at all to his system. He lives next to a small sub station and he house is quite new so think that is why.
The other thing worth looking at is a dedicated earth But as you know needs to be done right as can be lethal

Hi John, it's being fed by Mark Grant DSP 2.5 & everything that is connected to it is also connected by the same cable or MGs 1mm^2 version if using figure of 8 plugs. Therefore we have balanced clean mains fed via totally screened cable, not only that but the Belkin PF40s prevent certain equipment with SMPS from interfering with other stuff using linear supplies ;)

wow I have never seen anything like that before, I wonder what is inside it, it looks huge!

The P1200 is huge (twice the size of the P600)

Well there is what looks like a 1.4KW mains input transformer (maybe a tad more), a 600 - 800W output transformer & two amplifiers in a bridge configuration with 12 x 200W transistors for each amplifier  Each amplifier is only specified for about 350W RMS which is where the mains output of 600 - 700W comes from.

Yes it is pretty big & it weighs a ton, okay, maybe not a ton but at 110lbs or 50Kg it took me & a friend to lift it onto the top of "the fridge" :eyebrows:

It might generate very clean mains, in fact it should be cleaner than from the power plant premier due to the different mode of operation but it is very inefficient & puts out a load of heat that is frankly going to make it a pita to live with in the summer :(

I'll put up with it for as long as i can, but come 35C temps i'll be cursing the thing as it raises the temperature in here by a good 7 or 8C

On the other hand the only thing i want to upgrade now is my speakers ;) I'll be building those as soon as possible..

John, the P2000 (can you even attempt to imagine it ) is the same size as the P1200 externally, what it weighs i just don't want to know
