Saturday is record store day. Does any of the AOS members bother with it?
Last year i bought Stone Roses vinyl with a special gold embossed sleeve.
This year im looking for two speacials, a mono version of the Doors first album and a 10" Frank Arkwright pressing of the Smiths the queen is dead.
Probably head down to Rough Trade. Great store but can feel like the oldest swinger in town there

I always console myself with the fact that I have more musical knowledge than the rest of the little darlings put together ;)

For the last couple of years I've been lying about my age at festivals, I tell them 50, rather than my real 49...it confuses the hell out of them :)

"Good music is wasted on the young"...Earl Brutus, probably the only decent thing they wrote :lolsign:

a mono version of the Doors first album

You can buy the mono version on CD You don't wanna be paying £200 for a 1st press mono ;)

£200 instead of £13 or whatever a CD costs is one whole heap of pain though Colin :eyebrows:

Taking the piss out of my self. Hanging out in hostile record shops, spending lots of money on warped scratchy formats when all i have to do is buy a trouble free cd from the comfort of my own home. I miss being a record obsessive and having to go through hell to get that record :mental:

Oh i draw the line on prices like that. I wanted Neil Youngs recent le noise on vinyl but refuse to pay £35 for the old buggers pension. Bought it on cd £5.

Christ i thought you were being serious first time around :lolsign:

Although if you do want the Mono Doors cheap , the catalogue was re issued not that long ago on vinyl included was both the Mono & Stereo of the debut album..

Ta Andre. It must have been the same reissue series i bought LA Woman from.
Most re issues are utter shite but this sounds really good. No noise. I think it was Rhino and pressed in Germany.

Those last Doors reissues were excellent - I thought they sound as good as first pressings.

So it wasnt just me. I think when they come with those strange pink plastic inners they have been pressed in some famous factory in Germany. After i heard that ive been watching to see what theyre working on next.

Iv'e seen the list of things for sale on record store day and there aint much takes my fancy.

The one thing that does (the queen single) will no doubt sell real quick and be bought by people that will queue for hours. Not my style these days i'm afraid.

So for those reasons I will be giving it a miss.

There was mention of the Doors album being £200 - is that right? Where are prices listed?

I haven't seen any prices listed, only what's going to be available. This list is the UK offering: http://www.recordstoreday.co.uk/exclusive-product.aspx

I called a couple of dealers today re this and they won't all be stocking everything. They were given the list ahead of time and made selections they wanted, so if there is something you need it may be best to phone ahead to save a wasted journey

Yes, I saw the list & my favoured record shop have ordered loads of stuff, but they've said they won't know the actual numbers of each item that they've been sent 'til tomorrow morning & they are not answering phones 'til after mid-day!

Sounds like it could be a bit of a mad scramble then

It usually is. I know Phonica in soho is stocking the doors and Smiths record but its a dance music shop so im hoping im the only old git there and grab copies.

Ooh Phonica. Thanks for the heads up...!

Its Sister ray in London that has all the prices listed in their window. They claim to have everything for sale but there is no Bob Dilly album listed?

Rough trade has a list as well. Last year people were buying of the internet instead of in the shop. I hope that isnt happening again.

What did everyone get then?

I went a bit wild to be honest and spent a little more than I wanted to.

I got:

Foo Fighters - Medium Rare 12"
Deftones - Covers 12"
Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers - s/t 12" white vinyl
Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers - You're Gonna Get It 12" blue vinyl
Radiohead - Supercollider/The Butcher 12"
Roxy Music - Virginia Plain/Pyjamarama 7"
Regina Spektor - Four From Far 7"

I went, stood in a line for an hour with about 30 people in front of me. When the shop opened, I got to the counter after another hour.

I was mighty disappointed not to get a copy of the (2,000 worldwide) Big Star - 'Third'
(every 1 in 300 copies of this has a genuine vintage 1st issue test pressing copy of the album)

What I did come away with though was:
The Foo Fighters
John Hammond
Country Joe & the Fish
The Doors

Where was this event held? Colin didn't say in his opening post, and everyone else just seems to be 'in the know'....

Thanks for that - interesting. How does one hear about these things, though? Until it was mentioned here, I never knew of the existence of "Record Store Day".

I found out about it last year because the Flaming Lips sent me an email about their limited edition recording of Dark Side Of The Moon with Henry Rollins and a few others on green vinyl. I failed miserably to get a copy, but never mind, I still picked up some interesting stuff.

They have plugged this years one quite a lot on radio and the internet, I think you can go on the mailing list via that website, which also has a list of all the participating stores and releases.

Thanks, Dan. I'll register on the mailing list. That seems like a much more reliable way of doing things, rather than simply relying on luck and being fortunate enough to see it featured somewhere on the Internet or hear it mentioned on the radio :)

Which independent record store are you going to, Tim?

Square Records in Wimborne, around 3, they have live acts in there today as well, I want to see Nerina Pallot at 4. Not so much to buy Record Store day albums, as I spoke to the owner yesterday and it's pretty much all vinyl he requested, so not much for me unfortunately. But I pretty much always buy something when I go in :)

I was at Action Records in Preston. A guy behind me in the queue was on the phone to mates in other queues in Manchester & (I think) Liverpool. None of them got the Big Star album either!
At quarter past nine, someone in front of me was looking at Ebay on his phone and there were items already listed.

I went to Polar Bear records in Kings Heath, Birmingham by the way.... not a bad place, but a bit too small. It specialises in prog, krautrock and black metal, but has other stuff too.

I miss Tempest records in the centre of Birmingham, I used to love that place, but it was forced to close last year.

Anyway, back to watching Aston Villa lose....

Went into Sister Ray this evening and they still had the Bob Dillyon box set. I'm not surprised though they wanted £250 for it...!

They won't sell it for that price.

They have a lot of records in their store that are quite tasty but they always want the earth for them. Of course no one buys them. Some of them have been their for years...lol. Will they ever learn?

Record Store Day 2011
Square Records - Wimborne Minster

What a great afternoon, spent far too much money and bought 10 albums, but what the heck. Six of those were all Nerina Pallot (her entire catalogue!), who performed a solo acoustic/piano set for around 45 minutes. A fantastic lady who came across really well, with a very warm personality and wonderful voice. She was telling a story that she performed in the very same place 9 years ago and that she started her music career, as a direct result of hanging around in record stores on Saturday afternoons. A very talented and entertaining lady, now I just have to see if her recorded music is as good as her live performance, or I may have bought 6 duds!

I didn't bag any 'day' albums, as they were 95% vinyl and the one CD I wanted had sold out ....... I think owning a record deck again is just around the corner for me. The artist before Nerina, who was a very young lad, was a great advocate for vinyl. He was saying "You know records are very special and we need to keep them alive, I mean what are you going to give to your son when he gets to 15, 'here you are son, here's a hard drive'....... vinyl is real" I thought that was quite poignant coming from someone so young.

I thought I would add a few pictures and a short video of Nerina performing - I will be seeing her again for sure.

Yes, that's the one Marco and the best in Dorset I reckon, but I'm biased (picture below) and before anyone says it, no that's not mine by the door ;)

Nerina Pallot

And finally, I thought this was great, there were quite a few kids in the store who seemed to be having a great day and Nerina stopped to chat and sigh autographs - great stuff and a very successful day in Square Records :)

Glad you had a good day Tim. But, drat! - Nerina Pallot was one up my sleeve, a secret weapon I thought you'd go for but it seems the lady herself beat me at my own game! ;)

And now... I thought I had all her albums, but I'm sure I don't have six... (Ah, I think you got 3 albums, and 3 EP's? I don't have the EPs... New album out next month, though :))

Yep, 3 albums and 3 EP's (all signed :)), the 'Acoustic Session' is great, my top pick at the moment. Really nice lady and it was a fun time, I didn't realise she has written sings for Kylie.

And yep, the lady herself hooked me......... but then I am a soft touch ;)

Sorry, posted late. Where did the week go.
I managed to get The Smiths Queen is dead 10" from Sister Ray. Supposed to be pressed by Frank Arkwright. I thought he was dead
Havent had the chance to play it because i have to get of my fat arse and solder some rca plugs to fire the TT up.
