don't people have any respect for equipment?
I get this responce a hell of a lot, so here goes from seller:
Q: Is there any scratches or mark on items facia please?,
A: Are you an idiot? if you want new go buy something new, it's over 30 years old man, i can't honestly believe you asked that!
I totally & utterly do not understand that attitude one bit, regardless of how old a piece of equipment is if it looked after it should stay as good as new imoh!!

Accidents happen Andr'e, but i know where you are coming from ;) I treat all my equipment with respect & can honestly say i have only ever accidentally caused a single mark on one bit of kit. If i buy something secondhand it will not get in a worse condition than when i receive it :cool:
Heck, my speakers are spray painted & laquered, over 6 years old (maybe more :scratch:) & there isn't a single chip on them :D

I always ask similar questions too, when buying a S/H item of a forum or Ebay. The answers quite often leave a lot to be desired (more so Ebay than anywhere else)....vague or imprecise comments are the stock-n-trade of many slack sellers :doh: I get frustrated by this too but such is life and by saying that I am not saying its ok. Sellers who don't describe right get the sort of feedback they deserve ;)
I look after my equipment carefully and as an example my Marantz CD94 mk2 looks still like the day I bought it from new.

Lol, I do that too but it's getting harder living in a flat :scratch: All my stuff is in as new condition . . . . everything!

Agreed, dude, and I respect and admire your desire for perfection. Thing is though, much depends on how many owners a 30 year old piece of kit has had in its lifetime.....
Chances are that most sellers you enter into dialogue with have will not have been the sole owner from new of the item concerned, and thus cannot be responsible for any damage caused by dweebs who had it before them - which may be the reason why you often get the response you've described.... ;)
I guess that realistically you can only expect vintage gear to be mint if it's only had one (very careful) owner.

Non-enthusiast's expectations are often somewhat lower than ours, I find.
I bought a box of thirty-odd LPs cheaply off ebay. I only paid £10 and wasn't expecting too much - there were a dozen or so albums in there that I wanted and maybe 6 or 7 more that I wouldn't mind owning, the rest I was going to take down to the charity shop.
They we described as "condition is fine - all in good working order". When they arrived almost every LP was completely unplayable. There was a Jean Michel Jarre album with a 4 inch scratch on one side that was so deep that you could actually see it from the other side of the LP :lol: :doh:
Wasn't too bothered as I'd payed so little, but dropped the seller an email anyway. Got the reply "Duh, there (sic) old LPs - of course they're scratched!"

You might have what I want and the more people you can encourage to want what you have the more you will get of what you want - money. By being rude to potential customers means you will likely get less money! I am mearly trying to find out if what you have is up to my standards! Having high standards does not make me an idiot, quite the oposite in fact! A well looked after item of hifi will likely have more life left in it and give me more enjoyment! In summary, it is definately you who is the idiot and me, mearly no longer a potential purchaser ... Feel free to discus! P.s I can back up my argument with more than a few items of hifi 30 years or older with no scratches to the facia that I have bought of less idiotic eBay sellers!"

And you just let it go at that, Keith? Despite the low price, the seller really does need educating - and rather 'robustly', too, at that!
Yes, non-audio enthusiasts will definitely have lower standards than us, in terms of the condition of second-hand items, but software is a very different ball game from hardware!!
How would the f*ckwit feel, I wonder, if he were a fan of films, and you'd sold him a load of old DVDs, under the premise that they were "all in good working order", but in fact when he got them, were all scratched to hell and unplayable??
I doubt he'd be too chuffed (and would likely want a refund)!! So for some reason audio software is different??? No it f*cking isn't! :rolleyes:
It's the principle which is important here, Keith, so if I were you, I'd neg him and demand a refund (and if he gets stroppy, complain to eBay), because if you let him get away with it, he'll keep doing the same thing to others..........
In this instance, an example must be set!

Fair enough, but did you get a refund in the end?
If not, I'm afraid all you've done is reward his stupidity, and made him not think twice about exercising it again on some other poor sod, perhaps next time for rather more money....

I'm afraid that would sum up my 25 yr old Castle Howards. They even have festival stickers on them from when I returned home from an 80's festival in a state of "frivolity".
My 30 yr old JBL's I am afraid have been stabbed by many speaker stands and bear the marks of countless candlelight listening sessions .. as well as having started life in the Middle East and been shipped all over the place with me through the years ..
However the internals of both are impeccable .. having been professionally reconed and rewired ... I will give them a polish when I get home .. this thread is making me feel negligent ... :( ... I must admit to not being bothered by the odd scratch .... except on my vinyl of course .. :) ...
