Oh and I still have a pair of Kef R105.4 which I have still to finish rebuilding, plus various Mana Sounbases to utilise.

The bedroom system has now had the Classe CA-100 replaced with a CA-101, and a pair of Mana Soundbases reside under the Rogers.

Nice setups! I've been hankering after some Rogers Studio 1 speakers for a while .... what do you think of them?

I have had them for some time, pretty much agree with the old HiFi Choice reviews and awards they got. They cost a reasonable amount back then, I guess, wonder what today's eqiuivalent price and comparison would be?

My models are pretty late ones (still have boxes), the later 300w power handling model with binding posts, never been inside them, but don't believe they use the transformer based crossovers of earlier designs, nor do they have the Alnico magnet. I think your earlier Export Models are voiced more like the old Spendor BC1.

With suitable amplification they suffer less of the bass bloom problem, and are pretty similar in some respects to your old Monitors, except slightly more punch and I think a little more incisive. Pretty flat responce as well like yu have found your own to be, I still find them better voiced than many newer speakers.

I have mine a bit too close to the rear wall, so at high outputs there is a bit of resonance/boom. But I don't blast them so to speak, and the Classe and ana stages do a lot to tighten and control the bottom end.

Not for everyone I guess, I think they are pretty neutral, bigger sounding and rounder than many would like, due I think to people being accustomed to smaller speakers with peaky mid bass, and not everyone is impressed with a reasonable flat and extended responce with no treble enphasise or increased mid bass.

I do think amplifier choice is important though.

So yes, I like them, think they are just like newer more powerful versions of the older Export models with a similar voicing and more power handling.

Don't buy the later '1a' there not the same, more like 'Ls7'...Some say the '1a' sounds better but nay to my ears..probably the later Celestion metal dome they like...Never like the 'Ls7' either the Celestion 1000 tweeter never sounded right. The 'Ls7t' sounded even worse 't' being titanium tweeter...

If i was buying Roger the dodger's it would be 'Ls5/8'or '9' at push..

'Ls3/6' are the nearest to the Spendor 'BC-1'...Export & Studio 1' being designs worked from 'LS3/6'..I think thats right..

Nik why you get rid of em? I spy the Sumo pre/pwr ontop of that Vox AC30 (what looks like but may be a later tranny vox)...You carzy man

Yep, Sumo Athena & Polaris. Not bad amps.
There is also the arse end of a Cyrus 3 in there, not my favourite amp, the Accuphase preamp on the floor, two pairs of Rogers LS4a2 and a pair of LS7t :)

The VOX is an AC125 "Climax", made roughly '78-'82. Pair of Celestion G12Ms, 4xEL34, 2xECC83, 1xECC82, 1xECC81 and about 125watts of yeehaaaaa.

Sold the LS5/8s as they are just too damn big and ugly. ie. SWMBO told me to get rid :D Harbeth Compact 7s came next and in many ways are the better speaker albeit without the weight and scale. Such is life.

Quads. Well, they're not exactly beautiful are they?! :D
I could have happily lived with them but sometimes you have to lose the odd battle in order to win the war ;)

The Harbs were genuinely better speakers, if smaller. Would love a pair of M40s one day.

Sorry Sastus for hijacking your thread!

That's OK,

I remember you offering those smaller Rogers for sale, but as you see I ended up with two pairs of Cerwin Vega V-152 for that application.

Hello Sastus, what a heap of junk ;):)

I'd be embarrassed to have my friends round.

Throw it all away and get a MacBook Pro with Airport Express and Optical ADM9's, it's all you need and you'll be much happier. :smoking::dance::guitar:

Looking at all those Rogers speakers reminds me that I have a pair of (I believe) LS6 in the loft. Used to use them in the garden driven from my main kit with very long leads.

Can't see a mention of them; I thought they were very neutral and imaged beautifully in the open space, but does anybody know of these? Maybe they were crap (by Rogers' standards). No idea.

Hello JC,

Nice of you to comment. Though clearly you do not know the age of the equipment. Its not quite a 70's museum.

I myself don't think of it all as a heap of junk, I know there is better out there, but the stuff works and lets me enjoy my music. With the above I can hear differences in CD remasters, MP3 formats and lossless, PMP players, computer audio, CD transports etc etc. The system still has sufficient resolution and life in it to do me another number of years, and serve my music and me well.

I guess we have different types of "friends", though I feel that term is wrong if they judge you by such matters. Most of my "friends" are quite taken by my system, and many of them also have reasonable systems and a life, a lot are also involved in music, bands and recording etc. Many also use computers for music in the home, and have done for years.

I would rather not throw my equipment away, as I have said in other places MAC and PC are not the be all and end all of digital replay and DO NOT compete at all with many CD players when it comes to enjoying music (at least not to my ears, and many others I work with). The budget Sony CD player at work outperforms the IMac which is also used there, as did an old Dual 5150 which is currently the main performer in a system which also utilises a laptop, these two also outperform shuffles Ipods and various other PMP's. (Apple computers are pretty prolific at my work, as are MacBooks and such)

I am not at all convinced regarding the ADM9's, and did try and forget about the tit for tat, and delete a lot of posts which I felt were useless. What I read in the SOS and HiFi Choice review put them across as no better than any others in that price bracket. They are compromised, constructed from shelf components and overhyped. If they were any good I would be quite capable of selling one of my Classe powers and say an EAR phono to fund the purchase, and stick in either one of my PC's or MACs. But as neither of my PC's or MACs does music that well to my ears, and the ADM9 is so hyped and compromised.

I would definitely be much better off keeping the Classe, and the EAR phono, and putting a Technics 1210 into the EAR phono, and that into the Classe, and wiring this to a pair of Linn Kans. This would provide a much more fun and musical set up than a Macbook into ADM9's.

Besides I would rather buy Genelec S30-D speakers or similar active JBL's if I needed something active for use with the Macbook. And similar results CAN be had with cheaper pro active speakers and a cheaper laptop, Apple and ADM9 are not the only options for such a bedroom/bedsit system.

Anyway, instead of taking the piss out of others and their equipment, why not post a pic of you own system in your own system thread?

Good call, Steve. Let's see your set-up then, jc! Come to think of it, I'd like to see Ashley's, too... :)

I bet he's got a Garrard 401, a classic CDP, and some BC1s or something, instead of that ADM9 bollocks he promotes

;)

Marco.

Ho Ho Ho!

J.C., you are a bit of a stirrer, I feel, and obviously successful judging by the copious response!

Would this be the same 'airport express' that I took from Norwich to Heathrow last year? Certainly didn't make music for me!!!

As Marco says, how about showing us your wares. I'd love to post piccies but will have to wait until 'er indoors works out how to do it. Ideally I'd use the 21mm lens on my Olympus (to get the room in one shot) but haven't got a scanner. Thus I'm forced to use her (remarkably good) little Fuji digital to take piecemeal shots.

There are problems being an 'anachrophile' (as coined, I believe, by Ken Kessler). The seemingly outdated CDP is still a novely that I'm not entirely au fait with from a musical standpoint.

ROB. are you revisiting your roots in the near future?
