Amazing how you can't get a job these days even with the trade you have

Cabinet Maker/Joiner by trade cannot get a job at all. I moved into the steel industry after Joinery on lubrication, no chance again, broadened my horizons even further into personal care which i detest & have been trying to get out of for near on a year now! I really don't have the time or money to re-train for anything else, they say it's easier to get a job once your in one! :scratch:

I've noticed though these days that people insist on only working part time, no more than 30 hours it seems! does anyone know the reason why!

The government want skilled people out of work to set up business's Andre ... Ever thought of doing that?
There are certain incentives available to those setting up business, including I think a £2000 grant ... Be worth asking at the CAB!
Maybe as a cabinet maker you could look at somthing in the hifi trade? Speaker cabs?
If you can find a way to do it in spare time to start with it might take off??

A lot of employers only take on part time workers as they don't have the same rights as full time from what i gather? :scratch:

Secondly, anyone with a family (children) is guaranteed a minimum income per week from the government & any shortfall is made up by the government in this family credit thing... I guess a good few people think that there isn't much point in working more to have the family credit (or whatever it's called) taken away.

Of course if you don't have kids then tough, you have to put up with whatever you can make in a job :rolleyes:

I may be wrong about some of the above, but it's the impression i get ;)

Hamish tried that i used to make Turntable plinths but was great until i started selling a good few not having a proper place to make them , renting a place i could set up workshop ended up more expensive than my home rent :( the cash incentive looks intresting tho.. Speaker cabs are too much trouble to post out & are restricted to pick up, no shipping. Turntable plinths & surrounds no probs but i'm in two minds weither turntables are actually viable choice anymore!

It costs the employer less to do this. Less for their contributions + they don't have to give the same holiday rights etc to the part time employee.

Getting a full time job is pretty tough at the moment. I work three days a week in a bookshop and love it. I spend the rest of the time writing, my online mag and I have recently taken up writing fiction again and have been getting very favorable feedback on it, so maybe I might be able to get something published. Sadly though, unless you are a famous/very popular writer there is very little money in writing. A friend is about to have a book published and all she is getting is £900 upfront and the rest in sales royalties. All that for nearly 4 years work.....

I could always sell advertising space on my online mag (I get asked regularly if I will) but a very recent experience has reminded me that being clear of ad revenue allows me a certain degree of editorial independence that carrying ads might rob me off, or at the least might force me to compromise what I can say or at the worst gag me.

I hope Andre that you find something soon, which pays you well and that you enjoy.

Hi chaps, I am an Approved Electrician and I can.t get a job either. I have been out of work for weeks now and can't find anything other than shelf stacking rates for a skilled trade, which I just won't take no matter how tight things are. Of course with the Conservatives back in I didn't expect anything that hasn't already happened. NO INVESTMENT / HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT. I am old enough to remember Maggies innings so no change there then. I am still kicking myself for voting Liberal. Doh! Won't do that again. At least I've still got my sounds and a nice bike.
I will sit things out and hope for the best or maybe come up with some dodgy masterplan.

Current mess is an inherited one from the mess new labour made of running the country when in power.

What can the current government do but try to deal with a massive hole labour left in the boat that is the UK.....a boat that is rapidly sinking.

Lets cast are minds back a wee bit to the note a certain labour politician left in his cabinet office "opppps theres no money left" (i paraphrase)

Country is in a mess, world is in a mess and its going to take time to sort...if it can be sorted. Meanwhile though broke countries go to war when they have no money to wage it, no proper facilities to prosecute it and no idea how to finish it.....will we ever learn? ....nope !!!!!

We have a local hardware business with what look like garages/storehouses out back which are now rented to small businesses. I don't know whether you have anywhere similar Andr'e, somewhere small where you can set up securely in a bespoke cabinet business - knowing you the little that I do I KNOW your work would be amazing :)

When we lived within spitting distance of Kettering (:eyebrows:) I remember there being a business-venture place - a large old building made up into small-business units. Anything like that in your area?

Hi Andre, I hope you get sorted out soon. I have 10 years experience in my field of IT and I am having trouble too, though I have an interview on Wednesday in Antrim, so finers crossed! Seems it is getting increasingly difficult to find meaningful work, and even then it seems they are offering minimum wage only. :rolleyes:

Job hunting these days is down to pure luck, perseverance and sometimes being in the right place at the right time.

The moral of this story can be summed up thus:

Firstly, "Man who go to river bank with just one worm, he may catch one fish or no fish. Man who put thousands of worms in river make fish not hungry any more" In other words, push your CV out anywhere and everywhere, not just the jobs you fancy doing.

Secondly, embellish your CV to death. Did I say lie? No I didn't, but cast your mind back to the last time an employer was 100% honest with you and I don't see why I should be as pure as the driven snow when employers have crapped all over me so often. If any of you have received the Dear....... Thank you for your interest in this vacancy, but we have other candidates who more closely match the ideal candidate profile". No they haven't, they have found a better liar than you are who can formulate a better CV than you can :eyebrows:

Finally, play the bastards at their own pathetic game in the recruitment caper. The recruitment process is now mostly carried out online with electronic data, so they use scanners to "read" your CV, looking for certain words and phrases. I have a long list of keywords at the bottom of my resume in a tiny font, coloured white so it is invisible. Since I have done that and whacked it out to very specific websites, I now get a lot of speculative emails from headhunters looking to fill specific vacancies. I would be interested if they were closer to home, so I will just wait and see now which fish jumps into my net :eyebrows:

I think i'll join th club, i've got a BEng Hon in Electronic engineering from Durham Uni, and at the moment i'm flogging BT broadband ffsake, the problem is i've got loads of experience so employers are put off cos they will have to pay me more than a lad or lass straight out of college, my girlfriend who's a yank keeps telling me that i should move out to the USA and i'd get a job that i wanted easily, i'm not so sure.

As far as the government is concerned, maggie sold all our services, gas, water, electric etc. and labour sold our gold reserves, as bad as each other in my books.

Andre, I really wish you a lot of luck in finding a meaningful job.
Here in California the market is so bad,the real unemployment numbers far exceed 20%,so many peoples benefits have run out and they are not counted,people who took jobs making nothing or working 4 hours a day are counted as employed.
The same news media who discounted Mc 'Donalds fry cook jobs as meaningless non-employment under Bush are now under Obama raving how wonderful Mc Donalds is hiring a lot of part time jobs.Another one that gets me is Democrat lead congress but Republican controlled congress. Donald Trump has more experience in just about anything than Obama but the media is trying to make one of Americas most successful men look like a kook,and Obama who's own grandmother says he was born in Kenya,his family can't remember what hospital in Hawaii he was born in. And he can't produce a valid U.S. birth certificate. A certificate of live birth is not the same thing and you don't have to be born here to have one.His School records are sealed too because rumor is he got a foreign student grant. He has spent over 2 million alone just fighting to produce one something he should have done before taking office.
The media helped get him elected and they are fighting now with someone on the financial level of Gorge Sorrose and other backers of the DNC.
I believe Donald Trump will be our next president,if there is a U.S.A. left to fix.
What I'm saying is corruption is killing the western world.

The last job i had in the electronics industry i was testing, repairing & modifying SMPS for less than the minimum wage of today! £5.72 i was on about 6 or so years ago... I knew more about electronics than my damn supervisor who just happened to have an HND in electronics & yet i have no qualification in electronics what so ever...

The first week in that job i fixed a PSU that no-one had been able to, the reason was because it could never work due to it being a pre production unit & one op amp was wired arse about face. No-one spotted it except me, simply because with a circuit diagram in front of me i could see how the thing should have worked! :rolleyes:

I was exploited to buggary, but there was nothing i could do about it :steam:

Just to let you guys know I was given my redundacy notice a few months ago I actually enjoy working in the care field The last few months gas been very hard and at times I felt pretty depressed. But I kept plugging away and finally got a job ofer today
Andre perhaps a good idea is to create some kind of buisness plan, work out what you wish to do; then break it into small steps. When you do this sometimes it makes it look real instead of a dream

I was looking into some machinery the other day oo it aint cheap but not excessive.

I fell into the care work while i was working at the steel works, i knew the guy, as my other half looked after him anyway.Some staff left & he was in the lurch, i was asked to help out with some shift while on holiday, to cut a long story short my old job i was in wasnt to be much longer me thinks so left, ended up looking after him, we became good friends till i discovered he & i wasnt getting on, hence i grew to hate my job & still do even though were getting on a bit better.The money's not brilliant & being stuck in there 8-16 hours working for a standard rate is not my idea of getting anywhere in life, i need something where i can earn money through working hard, no matter how hard or slow you work in an hour, you still get your hourly rate...Both of us work full time, after we paid all our dues & demands every month we having to ration ourselves to spending money like a child, you know theirs something wrong in that situation..I aint getting any younger & i really need to get moving..

I think its great Andre you wish to work not everyone is like this.
I would imagine the quality of your work to be excellent as your standards are so high.
I think looking after someone the hours you are doing is really hard I always tried to balance it out by having plenty of variety in what I did, it really helped, but there been a few times I been quite burned out due to how much I took on.

Andrea, there's an American bod who makes real beaut plinths for Linn Sondeks which he charges big bucks for knowing that the well healed LP12 owner (not me) can drop a bundle on their TTs and not blink!
