One of my favourite things in the world is sunsets. I just love watching the sun go down on a warm evening, glass of red in hand, preferably with some chilled tunes to accompany the visuals.

This is a crap picture, but one of my favourite places I've ever been to for sunsets - Key West in Florida. (Come to think of it, one of my favourite places regardless of sunsets.) Because it holds such lovely memories from 5 years ago, before I was married, before I was a dad, despite the crap quality of the photo, I just love this picture.

I'm sure I'm not alone in loving sunsets - so, got any good pictures and stories to share?

(I have a reasonable view of the sunset from my back garden, which is what prompted this thread - but I was enjoying it too much this evening to get off my backside and find the camera!)

Well you have hooked me again Alex!

I have two of my favourite sunsets here, which are not particularly spectacular in themselves, it's more the story behind them - both were taken in the Cayman Islands.
Through a series on remarakble conincidences I ended up on holiday in the Caymans and learnt to dive there. I was captivated by the islands and wanted to return, but could never afford it. A year after this I won first prize at The London Dive show, which was a 2 week dive holiday in the Caymans! The first picture was taken on 7 Mile Beach, Grand Cayman towards the end of the holiday and I was totally pissed I had to leave.

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/greatgig/P9050031.jpg

Then another strange set of circumstances led to me getting a job offer there and this next picture was taken outside my apartment shortly after arriving on the smaller sister island, Cayman Brac. I was drinking a bottle of red wine and thinking back towards the day on 7 Mile Beach when the first picture was taken and saying to myself "Damn, I did it"..... happy days :)

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/greatgig/PC090092.jpg

I have plenty of other sunsets from there, but none as meaningful as these two.

We live near a hill that looks over Worcester and over to Malvern with the hills in the background... Been up there with the dogs during sunsets a lot just recently ... It's a good way to chill after work ... Here some photies from the other day

Thanks Tim & Hamish - superb posts and pictures - I want to go to the Caymans, and the Malverns - NOW! (well not actually now, the sun has well and truly taken his hat off, but you know what I mean!) Thanks chaps, I feel all warm & fuzzy after those (and hope Hannah and bump (prawn) are doing well, Hamish.)

Well if you get on over there right now Alex (you might need a transporter!), it's only 1823 in the Caymans and the sun will be going down soon :)

It's my thread, so I can drift it as I please! ;) - I'm actually really excited for you both too, as although we don't "know" each other, I just get the feeling that you are going to be blown away by the whole experience - trust me, whatever you think you will feel now, multiply by about 10 and you will be closer! (I'll remind you of this a couple of weeks after the birth!) And on that point (the birth) - trust me on this - all the antenatal classes and books/websites etc. will concentrate very much on the birth, but trust me (again!) - the actual birth will be the "least" of your worries - (maybe not Hannah's though!) - but in all seriousness, don't dwell on the actual delivery too much, because that is only the beginning of the most amazing journey of your lives...

Anyway, back to sunsets... :)

Well I am a sucker for sunsets (and sunrises when I'm around for them :)) so I hope you don't mind me sharing these with you ... They were taken on a tour of Peru last summer which was a 6 week journey with just me and my 18 yr old son .. our last big venture together before he moves away to college and into his own life ..

Obviously this doesn't need a lot of explaining  We were married on the beach in St Lucia last May. It was supposed to be two weeks earlier but there was a little unexpected dust in the air and everything was cancelled on the day we were flying. Try arranging a wedding abroad in two weeks - no pressure!

to be honest, im not so worried about anything much now ... we are half way through, we have had a few worries, but everything seems to be going well! because of hannahs health we have had a consultant lead pregnancy which has meant they have been looking after us very well! 24 weeks gone we have already had 3 scans and have 2 more booked to we are getting plenty of reassurance ... that said as the date gets closer im sure i will get more nervous! its the little things, and the practical implications i cant get my head round ... and the money worries ... but im sure we will be fine! Camera lenses made by traditional lens designers and manufacturers (typically German of the 1960s), such as Zeiss, Voigtländer, Steinheil and Leitz.

"Coochy coochy coo" (Don't look this up in the 'Urban Dictionary'!)

Nikon too ... Nikon of been a company since 1881 although back then they were "Nippon Kogaku K.K" ... they even used to make lenses for canon ... or Kwannon as they were back then ...
I often use older lenes that have a "feel" to the images they produce!
nikon haven't changed their mounting system since 1959 and my DSLR is completely functional with lenses dating back to 1977 ... 1959 with minor modification http://www.realphotographersforum.com/content/133-Modification-of-pre-ai-Nikon-lenses-for-use-on-some-DSLR-s ... that lens being one of my favourite for producing a softer lower contrast image!

the lens i used for the photos i posted is a 50mm 1.2 ais ... perhaps considered slightly less "vintage" being designed in 1981 and in fact mine was made in 2002 so really i suppose its not vintage at all...

more info here
http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/nikkoresources/50mmnikkor/index6.htm

http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/nikkoresources/50mmnikkor/KWeinman_50mmf12AIS.jpg

... but even though they still make them to this day it is still the same 1981 design and being as it is a 1.2 lens from that era, it does "suffer" from some of what are widely considered disadvantages of such designs. for eg, it is not the sharpest lens out there, even many much cheaper 50mm 1.8 lenses will top it in terms of sharpness! It also can be very low in contrast, especially when used "wide open" at 1.2!
so combine low contrast and sharpness with wide open shooting and you get a very recognisable "feel" to the image that when used in certain circumstances produces what i suppose you could describe as "dreamy" images like the ones i have taken!

my most vintage lens is one of these from 1936 ...

The location isn't so exotic, but some of the best sunsets I have ever witnessed have been from the North Norfolk coastline.

I was sitting in my caravan one evening 3 years ago in Snettisham watching the news and happened to glance out of the window to see the sky absolutely ablaze with colour. I marched up to the beach to find at least 100 people sitting or standing, watching the spectacle. As time wore on, the sky filled with reds, oranges, yellows, greens and purples as the sun slipped through a thin veil of cirrus and on into the sea. As it finished the crowd spontaneously broke out into a round of applause. It was a very special moment to share with like minded people.

Here is a view from Wells-Next-Sea looking out over the quay towards another gorgeous sunset. I can't be certain whether this is one of mine or not, but it was in one of my albums so it probably is.

Hamish, please be aware that you'll NEVER be "number one" again, EVER!!!!! Some fellas get on with this fine, but I didn't and it took months to get used to this pink, crapping, screaming blob taking up all my wife's attention. It was a HUGE growing experience for me but I'd be far less of a man had I personally not followed this path. My son has taught me to be a dad of sorts and this experience is helping no end at school now. I still don't know much about teenage girls though (does anyone :lolsign:?)

This is one from Key West the other year, we were stopping at the Hyatt around the corner from Mallory Square Dock.

it was still 30c when the sun went down, we had a luvly if not to hot time down there.

I highly recommend the Hyatt, it cost me a 60hrs overtime for 3 nights !

When my son was born, my wife had a caesarian that went slightly wrong (nothing serious, and all OK afterwards). The result was that I was handed this very small pink thing and left to my own devices for about 20 minutes whilst Jane was sorted out.

We looked at each other. "Hello", I thought, "Who are you?". I guess he was thinking the same. 25 years later it's still the most amazing thing that ever happened to me (although I found when his sister arrived two years later that the novelty doesn't wear off!), and we're both still finding out. He's now 6' 1" and making a stab at running his own business. I'm immensely proud.

It's funny how peoples little anecdotes make it seem so much more real ...
I feel oddly detached from it all at the moment, with work being busy and with the puppies and it beingjust gone half way through I have been a bot distracted from the reality of it all ... All my concerns have just been for Hannahs health and well being ... Just recently we have started to see it wriggling around which is very reassuring ... But this half way through bit just seems to be taking ages! I just want to meet him/her now :)
Every one keeps telling me about the "first moment when you meet for the first time" ... I want that to hurry up and come ... But then I remember ... Shit, we have so much to do before then ... And when then come I have this massive learning curve! .... Not to mention the fear of breaking it! I've never held a baby! since Hannah got pregnant her brother has had a little girl, very cute! But I declined to hold it, meaning the first baby I hold will be my own ... Which is amazing I think ... But I've not held one before, never mind, change a nappy, fed one, clothed one, stopped one from crying... Then there's all the accompanying bits like sanitising bottles working out how the pram/car seat/bed thing works ... I was saying to Hannah the other day ... What do you do with a baby? On a day to day basis ... What does it do, and what do we do with it? I've been reading books and stuff, but they just seem to makeit more confusing! I'm just hoping everyone is right when they say "don't worry, it will come naturally" ... It bloody better I can tell ya!
One thing I do know... This baby is going to be the subject of a lot of photos! ... That about the only thing I'm sure of at the mo! :)

Hamish - all I can guarantee you, is that whatever you do, you won't be prepared for it - ever! My advice is to enjoy the rest of the time you have left as a couple, and not get too stressed about it - it WILL come naturally, I can assure you, and if not then the support you will hopefully get from Health Visitors etc. will be great if ours were anything to go by.

I'm a bit of a sucker for sunsets. Does your camera have a 'panoramic' mode option or did you crop a larger shot?

What was the beer? Or will the identity of that appear in the 'Recommended Wine and Real Ale' thread?

Yes, my camera can stitch 3 shots together to make a panoramic image Barry. It can be tricky in some situations to get them to match properly - you get a faded version of a strip of the right hand side of the previous shot which shows in the left hand side of the viewfinder (or screen), allowing you to overlay the two to make it seamless. This is great if you have an obvious point of reference, but you often get odd looking results if you're not careful. There are other strange effects too - as you can see on the first panorama where the horizon dips in three places! It's like a lot of gadgets - useful, but not perfect. However the camera is nothing special as far as cost is concerned.

The beer was:

Not sure if you have seen it but Microsoft do a free  program that does an excellent job of stitching images together.

It is called Microsoft Ice (image composite editor), watch the video and have a go with a few photos:

I started a thread about this here:

Nice picture Mark - that does look like a great place to go and unwind. Actually, unwinding is probably the wrong turn of phrase for a cable manufacturer, but you know what I mean! :)

We live near a hill that looks over Worcester and over to Malvern with the hills in the background... Been up there with the dogs during sunsets a lot just recently ... It's a good way to chill after work ... Here some photies from the other day

Wow...! Look at the flare on the lens on that shot of the woman. One good reason not to include the sun in your shots.

Jeez, dude, *that* is 'proper': the stuff of commerial quality posters and calendars (and probably better, in my view)!

What a shame that your unfortnuate illness has deprived the world of the excellence of your photography, professionally... :(

But, it looks like you're still enjoying yourself, privately, regardless - nice wan, ma man!

All I did was press the shutter.

Is that right? ;) . I have a camera and on a good day I can point it at things and press the shutter so why aren't my pics anything like yours?  .
I suspect talent, skill and a good eye might have played a small part and none of which I've got in any measurable amount :)
Beautiful pics IMHO,
Dave.

Aye, the shutter on what kind of lens and camera, though? ;)

Also, the the type of software picture processing, and how it's used, makes a huge difference... Oh, and perhaps also because you're a professional photographer :eyebrows:

Honestly, mate, joking aside, I've not seen one of your images (especially the stuff you used to take for the newspapers) which wasn't less than excellent!

Where were you staying in Greece, Andrew?

Andrew B
23-07-2013, 20:55
These pics are from Kos. The sunset was on Kohilari beach, just outside Kefalos. The sunrise was literally about half a mile away in Kamari bay, Kefalos.

Lovely. Was the island nice and quiet? It looks it ...

Sadly I won't be doing the annual pilgramage to see the in-laws in Greece this year - going to really miss the sea and sunsets!

Andrew B
23-07-2013, 22:54
Some parts are quiet. I've been so many times, I guess I've gravitated towards the less touristy parts. Kefalos has so much coastline and great beaches, it's easy to find a bit of seclusion.

I've been spending extended periods in Cyprus (and sometimes Kos) for some time now. "Holidays" right now are when I nip back to "Blighty" for the odd bit to escape the heat and have a bit of fun with my hifi bits. I'm back for 3 weeks tomorrow but I might be unlucky with escaping the high temperatures, if the posts on here about the hot weather are correct. At least I will be leaving the mozzies behind.

Greece and Cyprus are so nice to spend time in. I can understand you missing the experience, especially with Greek in-laws. I'm missing the fab food this time because I've been on a diet for what seems like forever. Temptation is everywhere!
