Maybe that's why I don't use Craigslist .... :mental: there are some for 3 grand on Ebay but at least they appear to be genuine 15" Gold's ..

All you need now is a pair of Leak 12.1's to match for another 3+ grand, crazy prices

Utter madness... But it's probably because they've got the very rare orange dust caps.

Blame the loony-tunes Japs! :mental:

Yeah, that's also what I was thinking.... It should've said in the ad whether they were Golds, Reds, Silvers or Blacks - that, erm, 'small detail' makes all the difference!!

Cheap you mean? :)

They do fetch a lot the early reds, silvers etc from buyers in the east - or at least people always ask a lot.

Some listings on ebay:

Is it for us to question the sanity of people who pay this much? No, but I suppose we can laugh to ourselves at them..

TBH, those prices aren't too scary - I've seen much worse!

And when you hear how magnificent they sound when housed inside suitable cabinets, which needn't cost a fortune, one may well be tempted to call it a bargain... ;)

I'd sooner buy those Reds before I would about 90% of the speakers made these days, purporting to be 'hi-end'!!

P.S.

Just looking at other London craiglist listings - they look very suspiciously fake to me, trying to entice a large bank transfer only for the seller to then disappear.

Every highly sought-after hifi item is listed there for mega £££s, Levinson 6as, rare Urei monitors, these Tannoy Reds, Nagras.. Coincidence if they're from different sellers [that all these rare items are for sale], odd that backgrounds in photos are never the same if from the same seller.

I suggest to stay clear of craigslist and gumtree for hifi unless they welcome you to view and decide later i.e. not take the cash with you on the first view.

Try not to link too much to them should some poor innocent fall for it.

True perhaps when comparing the two in terms of performance/price but the new speaker still hasn't had the materials, r&d, man-hours, 50 - 70% dealer mark-ups etc paid for whereas the secondhand item had that paid for yonks ago. Unwise to compare used versus new prices even though it is that very comparison that can drive high prices in some vintage kit.

One is only paying the high price for a used item because of an abstract sense of value based on rarity, personal desire for the item and competition with others. And then those factors of 'Rarity' and 'Competition with Others' are easily manipulated by sellers to raise prices, whilst high prices in turn raise 'desirability' in some people's eyes...

As any house clearance/industry clearance specialist will tell you, many folks will pay YOU to take these away.

The crazyness comes when you compare one end of the scale to the other - someone will pay to get rid of them/others will pay £3000 to own them.

Place yourself in the right company and situations and with patience perhaps something like these reds will come your way for peanuts.

Then again, if you've got the money and you want something then maybe life's too short to wait....
