I've just recently returned from the alps on a snowboarding trip in serre chavalier with a mate and we both had a fantastic time, although my mate did injure his wrist in the first hour and may have cracked a rib

My brother and his missus own a chalet/apartment out there which was empty for a week or so and we decided to take advantage. Now i've been boarding a long time now (im an instructor) but this was my mates first time in the mountains and slopes (hence the injurys) and was excited about the whole trip.

It was a last minute descision to go,so we booked with ryanair and got a rental car at turin to drive to the chalet about 1 1/2hrs away. The journey there was great lots of sunshine fantastic views.

Now the journey back was a different matter,as i said my mate had injured his wrist and had to have a wrist guard to be able to drive. We had to be at check in by 9:15a.m. at the latest so left at 7:00,plenty of time,if you don't factor in crazy italian driving

We were making good time driving through france and made up 1/2 hour then we hit italy and no sooner as we did we got stuck in traffic due to an accident. It must have been bad as there were at least 3 ambulances we had seen go past and the 1 car we saw involved was a complete mess,we could only think of the poor people invovled maybe themselves coming back from the alps.

We had lost about 20mins but we were in one piece and on time. Now the next 40mins we experience the most insane crazy driving i've ever seen, cars travelling over 100mph with another about 3ft behind seemed to be the norm and why they bother to put indicaters on cars in italy is beyond me.At one point we were overtaking an artic in the fast lane with the concrete barrier on the drivers left hand side and out of nowhere a motor bike trys to force his way past us on the drivers left, absolute idiot and bearing in mind we had seen 1 accident all ready we quickly figured out what probaly had happened with that one.

Anyway needless to say we came to another jam due to a accident this was about 10miles outside turin. We still had plenty of time,or so we thought we had about 20mins to checkin,we were in the jam for about 1 1/2 hours. This was a very bad accident involving at least 4 cars and no doubt involved some selfish prick thinking he is a f1 driver.

So of course we missed our flight and there are no more ryanair flights unless we got to rome and see what they have, which was out the question.
We ended up paying £185 each one way on BA.We were told the flight was fully booked and that they only a few seats for these types of situations. When we got on the flight it was half empty, cheers BA :steam:

So a little warning if your planning to do any driving on italian motorways update your will, tell family and friends you love them and develope the ability to not shit yourself when someone is 3ft behind you when driving at 90mph.
(and if you have a plane to catch add 3hrs to your journey or an extra £200)

Nightmare, Darren. I've been to Italy several times, but I'm not sure I've ever noticed them being that bad, but then I'm always doing 100, 3 feet off the bumper in front anyway, so I probably thought it was normal! ;)

Hope you enjoyed the boarding, though. Been a few times, but not for several years.

cheers alex, yeah really enjoyed my boarding, not the best conditions but had not been for awhile so made the most of it.

I suppose i'd better get used to the driving over there as it looks like i could be travelling that way quite regulary
