This is good news, although due to current production laws brand new valves will never be the same as proper NOS.

Why's that?

It's something to do with poisonous materials that were used once in the production process of valves in the 40s, 50s, 60s, etc, now being banned, which apparently had a significant effect on how they sounded. I also believe that the anode construction quality of vintage NOS valves is superior, together with the process from the ground up as a whole.

Listening tests, to my ears, bear this out. In my system I can quite easily tell the difference between different vintages of NOS valves, and brand new stock valves, for that reason. One thing, though, the new Mullards should have is improved consistency, reliability, and (it appears) longevity, due to new developments in materials and modern production methods. Getting good vintage NOS valves can sometimes be a bit of a lottery.

For a proper explanation on the subject Anthony TD is your man :)

I thought this thread was about something completely different.

The movie in the history section is one of the most fascinating and, in the end, poignant, things I've seen in a long time.

Some more info here

I will be looking with interest to see how these valves perform and also their prices. They look completely different to any ecc series valves I have seen before.

Anyone know if these things are available yet?

Every time I've been on the site, they've put release dates back and back. Something to do with microphony. Apparently, they WANT a bit of deliberate microphony as it can aid perceived sound quality - sort of says it all, in a way..

There's no way that these valves would compare in construction to the Mullard originals, as these will be using CRT technology which was developed from the older valve designs, so apparently things will come full circle.

I've read elsewhere that these new valves will carry a £30 each kind of price tag, so I don't think the far eastern and Russian brands will need to worry overmuch.

Once they get going, I'd love to see what they can do with a KT66 style replacement. I NEED some character with that one

They've got prices (for the 83 equivalent) on the site... but it seems there's no way of actually buying any as yet!

I think I might give up waiting and go for the TJ jobs.

Cheers...

Give Ian Large at Allium Audio a ring/E-Mail they do TJ and TJ mesh. I've heard the TJ Mesh plate 300 Bs and I thought they were very good.

Does anyone know what happened to this company?
Their website seems to have disappeared: www.techtubevalves.com (http://www.techtubevalves.com)
I know they kept pushing back the release date but now it looks like they've gone bust or something. :(

The whole Blackburn site closed late last Audtumn I believe, and the valve offshoot looks to be one of the casualties of this. What a shame...

There were rumours of a management buy-out but I don't know if it's come to anything.

The story so far:-

I wouldn't think we will be seeing anymore valves from Blackburn, sad really.

Darn, I was really hoping we'd finally get some well made decent sounding new British valves again. Vintage valve prices are getting stupid. Oh well, maybe they'll get up and running one day.

Cheers.
