I’m always on the listen-out for new music. Despite tuning into various net radio stations, reading what I can find about music on the net and trying to get to listen to what my friends are listening to some stuff just seems to slip under the radar. So, I thought I would start this thread. The idea is to post a bit about a lesser known band you’ve discovered that you think are worth a mention.

The New Pornographers.

I don’t know what I was expecting but it certainly wasn’t what I got. I’ve recently bought 5 of their albums, 4 second hand and one new and haven’t been disappointed with one.

If music must be catagorised then I suppose what they do will get described as pop but its intelligent pop. Overall I think their standard of musicianship is excellent with some clever song writing and male and female harmonies.
What I find special about this band is they have that same effortless feel to them that I think Ozric Tentacles have while making a completely different type of music. I get the feeling that they enjoy what they do and would just carry on turning out interesting and varied tracks just for the fun of making music.

Apparently they are quite popular in the USA but don’t seem to have made much of an impact over here. If you like The Cardigans then I think you’ll probably enjoy this lot.

I have three of their albums now. There's something very compelling about their apparently simple tunes that are so well executed.

Ok here's one for you...Grizzly Bear

They've been around for a few years, very hard to categorise (hurrah!), and even when you think you've got them pigeonholed the next track is entirely different. A bit like an american radiohead crossed with the beach boys with some psychedelia and close harmony...no I give up they're quite unique IMHO.

I saw them last year and they are superb live...

Thanks Will, checking out Grizzly Bear as I type. As you say they’re a bit different. I may have to get a CD or two.

I have a couple of Turin Brakes albums Martin. They are an interesting band but they’re in bad need of a decent producer and recording engineer. The band is great but I find the mix a bit hard on the ears. I still listen to Ether Song from time to time.
