The Art of Sound Spotify Playlists & Facebook Page

To assist with sharing Spotify playlists amongst the forum, a new Art of Sound Spotify Page has been created.

You can find it by clicking this link:

http://open.spotify.com/user/theartofsound

Once opened, you can (should you wish) add The Art of Sound to your People list, which will enable you to easily follow any updates.

A few of the AoS contributed playlists have already been included, but more will be added soon - and all suggestions gratefully received.

As part of the process in enabling AoS to have a Spotify account that people can link to, it is necessary to link the Spotify page to a Facebook account.

Therefore, The Art of Sound also now has its own Facebook page.

I appreciate that some people will have no interest in Facebook at all, however those of you who are Facebook users, may want to "Like" the AoS page, which will then link you in to being a "fan" of The Art of Sound, and keep you updated of any changes that are made.

At the moment, content is very limited, but my intention is that we will add some photographs and a brief write-up of the Scalford show, and also use the page for any interesting announcements which may be of interest to the outside world.

It might be that a few new members will find their way here from the Facebook page, but I expect the major spin-off will be that existing members will be able to connect to each other and become "Facebook Friends" and add to the greater sense of community that AoS strives to achieve.

I hope you will all find these tools useful, but please let me know if you have any problems, or suggestions.

I rarely use facebook myself, but loads of people do, anyway people have the choice in how deeply they want to use this

An invite allows you to hear as quest its not quite as good as membership as you get adverts but allows you to use it for free and have fun with it, you can then decide if you wish to hear in better quality and without adds

What does an invite give you over just signing up for the free option?
As far as I am aware (and someone correct me if I'm wrong?) signing up for the open free account, only gets you 'limited' access of 20 hours a month with adverts. A free 'invited' account gets you unlimited access with adverts.

An Unlimited account (4.99 per month) is unlimited access, no adverts and 160kbps .ogg files.

A Premium account (9.99 per month) is unlimited access, no adverts and 360kbps .ogg files and access to some artists albums before they go on general release.

Premium accounts also allow off-line access if using compatible devices, such as iPhones, as your playlists are stored on your device.

Yes please do Alex. I'm a total ignoramus when it comes to downloading and computer audio. (Come to think of it computer anything!)

By the way, congratulations are in order on your elevation to pantheon of the immortals. I still catching up on a backlog of posts, so apologies for the tardy congratulations.

I think this is a really wonderful initiative. At last we can actually share the music we listen to.

I've more or less sorted out my Spotify streaming woes and have been downloading others' playlists to my smartphone to listen to on my daily commute (what better way to discover new music?).

Can any of us submit playlists?

This is to help people with using Spotify for the first time.
With this system music files are not downloaded onto your computer, you only stream the music from a secure source (libary). So you do not get ownership of the files. That said you can access the music on another computer as long as you can remember your password.
There are different ways you can become a member
The first is get an invite, both Alex and myself are willing to send invites to regular members. This is free a good way to get used to the features and decide if you want to improve the service. It does has adds and is limited to tthe amount of access you can have.
The second method is to pay, you have a choice of Unlimited and Premium, the main difference is in sound quality Premium has a higher bit rate so quality is better. Tim's above post explains the cost well

How to get sound from Spotify onto your system. There are many ways of doing this and your options will depend on the gear you use
I have quite a simple approach Mark also uses this approach and like me is very happy with the sound quality
I use a USB converter http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HA-INFO-NG-COAX-USB-SPDIF-COAX-Converter-New-/120671904371?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c189b2273 and just connect via usb from computer to converter to digital cable and then DAC (you could also use a digital input on a CD player if it has this option) But lots of other ways you can do this

Thanks John - another point worth mentioning is that Premium members can use mobile devices and "keep" up to 3,333 tracks offline - (either on a mobile/connected portable or on the local computer) so another benefit if you wanted to listen to a personal on the train, for instance.

I noticed that too, but I'm already subscribed :) That's me sorted for tonight - HiFi News came through the post today and I've stocked up on the single malt :glug:
