What I would give to have just one of those machines, let alone the idea and time to come up with a sound as fab as that!

That is fab! Sounds like Akufen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7nNF0FJ3-I). What a labour of love!

My first reaction was "What a waste of technology, what a dreadful way to treat Studer tape machines and it doesn't do anything that a modern digital sampler can't do - anyway I hate 'scratching'!"

It then occured to me that the machines weren't Studers anyway (all Studers are designed to be used horizontally, it is the Revox range that can be used vertically), they are Pioneers, either the RT-1011, RT-1020L or the RT-1050. I felt only slightly better with that thought. ;)

Anybody know about Stellavox? (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320668426341&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT) Looks like an absolute beauty.

One of our members, 'Thermionic' has one (I think it's an SP9). I know something about them.

Briefly, Stellavox was started by a group of ex-Nagra engineers lead by George Quillett. They based their design on the Nagra but were able to add important improvements so making the machine more flexible, for example: the use of interchangable head blocks and interchangeable plug-in circuit modules. Some would say they are better built than the Nagra; they are certainly more elegant in appearance. Both are examples of Swiss engineering at its best. I suspect Stellavox's have better ergonomics, but I have never laid my hands on one, so cannot be certain.

Curiously for all their advantages, Stellavox never achieved anything like the market penetration achieved by Nagra; which had rapidly established itself as the de facto standard location recorder in the film industry. Stellavox are no longer in business whereas Nagra are, though they no longer make analogue recorders.

Andy

I was incorrect when I stated Stellavox are no longer in business. André has reminded me that Stellavox are still going but have moved into the amplification and D/A market: http://www.stellavox.com/index.html

I didn't know that. It looks like they've moved from the mechanical to the electronic though; I can understand that. I've always thought that mechanical design was far more problematic than electronic design.

Not to worry. I dont forsee myself laying out the necessary at the current time. :)

Lovely looking machine isn't it? But the SNST was deigned for 2-track, as in 2-person surveillance recording, not Hi-Fi, so while it might have the fabbiest thing for Jim Phelps to brief his team on, it isn't so fab for portable Hi-Fi!

Mind you I've got my eye on that auction; exceedingly interested to see how much it goes for :)
