I think I have to face facts, my Numerik is dead. :doh:

So I was wondering if anyone had a reasonably priced DAC they were willing to pass on.

I am, of course, considering one of stan's caimans. But I was wondering before I made the plunge if anyone had anything second hand out there that might also be worth a shot.

I noticed the new Heed model is for sale on this forum, but the lack of reviews out there makes me nervous.

Yes I missed out on one of these the other day, it was going in a local auction for €280, plus interconnects. I was gutted I missed it. I've read a couple of reviews and it sounds like some good kit.

Yes, I am more than convinced that buying a Caiman would be well worth it. Still gotta wait a few days to get paid, and then I'll make my mind up. But I think the Caiman+Gator will be top of the list.

You'd be struggling to build something for 70 quid so the 7510 is a great offer, the Caiman really is few steps up though and be worth the extra if your budget allows. The 7520 is ideal for the diyer into fiddling.

Not heard the MF M1 yet so don't know how it compares sonically to the 7510 or Caiman

Yea the Caiman is winning the battle at the moment. Thought somebody on here might have something interesting that they wanted to trade up from... For instance, no idea what it sounds like mind you, but I saw a conrad johnson DA-2b dac (valve jobbie) go on fleabay for 250 the other day. I'd say that would be an interesting piece of kit.

Tell me did you order the DAC off of Stan's site or off of ebay? Suppose its immaterial, apart from what seems to be a few quid in the difference.

I'm sure I'll feel like a fully fettled member of AOS (been reading religiously for two years now) once I get the DAC; as to be really in with the AOS-in-crowd you have to own either a stanDAC or a Techie!! :lolsign:

Anyway, I'd agree, that the Caiman is a great product, and punches above its weight because there are no large-manufacturer marketing or distribution costs associated with it. The money is spent on the components not fancy casework, and Stan of course knows what he is doing design-wise.

I only found the forum when Stan pointed me in this direction to read what people were saying about it when I first ordered one, but of course many people do as you might, and become owners after joining. I don't personally think that its a problem that AoS is the "home" of the Beresford DACs or Techie or MG cables (etc.) - it represents the Sound Per Pound Value approach that Marco extols, and many of us tight-wads hanker after! :eyebrows:

I got mine direct from Stan, in fact I got it before it went on sale if I remember correctly. I have the 7520 which has a USB input and it's a cracker. As it's the pre-upgrade power supply version I added a cranked-up Maplin XM-20 which has transformed it (to coin a phrase) from being excellent to very excellent.

They are simply superb DACs for the money, and as you've probably noticed on here, they are upgradeable and tweakable. Plenty of things to do to them and as we have the man himself on here, plus dozens of very intelligent modifiers, you'll not go wrong.

Its far from a negative thing to find a group of people who take the time to extol the quality and value of products they use and enjoy. Its one of the main merits of this forum. ;)

Now this "tight-wad" just has to wait till pay day till I can dust off my wallet and invest in some new kit.

I have a Perpetual Technologies P-3A Modwright Signature DAC in fab condition with original box and instructions for £200 posted if this is of any interest to you. Lots of reviews and details on the web.

By the way, from what i have heard & read the Perpetual Technologies kit is very good indeed, in fact i was after some until the dCS kit i use was brought onto the market ;)
