I'm pretty sure you won't find a Universal Wi-Fi driver. Have you tried the laptop manufacturer website? I am assuming you can still access the net, as you posted the question.

Re finding out what it is, try this tool, which should identify your adaptor.

A few things:

If it's W7, go to Device Manager (right-click on Computer then Manage), identify the network or unknown device with an exclamation mark, right-click and update, then ask for Internet/Automatic update (with an ethernet cable connection, of course). If it can find the driver, it will.

Go to the manufacturer's website and find drivers for the laptop. If they have Vista drivers, they will likely work with W7. Even if they don't, the listed (say) XP driver will say what the wi-fi hardware is, for instance Realtek. Now go to the manufacturer's website and try to find generic drivers.

Lastly, and least satisfactorily, find the original (say) XP drivers CD and copy the wi-fi driver folder to a temporary folder on the hard disk. Find the setup/install program, right-click and set compatibility for XP SP3. Then try and run it.

It's a very rare laptop that's younger than about six years old that cannot somehow be mangled into working fully, it takes a little detective work so don't give up.
