Wanted: Audiolab 8000a

I'm looking for an Audiolab 8000a - I have never owned one of these and would like one for a new project. Needs to be in good working order as I cannot mod or upgrade it myself.

Also, are there any good places I should be looking, apart from eBay and the Wigwam?

I have never had one and looking forward to trying it out - it's going in my study driving a pair of B&W 601's via a DAC. Just to give me Spotify etc whilst working in the study :)

I will also try it against my MF A3 amp just to see what the difference is.

The 8000A in its early grey cased days could easily sound dead, tonally uninteresting and "grainy" if you got it wrong. It was particularly inappropriate for a flat-earth style of system with boomy source and screamy speakers. As the market sorted itself out in the early nineties, the 8000A's of all ages seemed to come into their own and even old ones (by then) sounded better than ever I found.

Great old amp this is, and ripe for component updating I reckon, tone controls and all. You'll find it will have out-lived many of the Creek, Arcam, Marantz, Mission and Pioneer trend-boxes that came up against it during its long life.

Phew! I lucked into the right sort of system then! In 1985 I bought (with my first few paycheques!) a Pink Triangle/Helius Scorpio, Audiolab 8000A and Rogers LS7 speakers. Not flat earth, and very much my cup of tea. Lasted me up until a couple of years ago when upgradeitis struck again, but the components are still all in the family and going strong after 25 years...

Those LS7's seem to get better with the decades, especially the "T" version, which bit ones head off when new...
