Hello everyone! It's a pleasure to join a site of such knowledgeable and good-spirited audiophiles. I may be a noob on this site, but I've been into audio for quite some time. I'm 22 and finishing up my bachelor's in marketing, so I'm sure some of you have been putting systems together for longer than I've been alive ;). I certainly have a lot to learn.
I suppose I'll start with music preferences, then talk about gear and such. My musical tastes are a bit eclectic and nonsensical, but here we go.
Jazz: 1955-1965 or so and some modern minimalist stuff like ECM's catalog
Electronic: My preferences lie towards chill, ambient, tribal, psybient and psytrance. I really enjoy Shpongle, Steve Roach, and Flooting Grooves, and I'm working on my own ambient album!
Classic Rock/Psychedelic Rock: Beatles, Cream, The Doors, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, CCR, etc.
Classical: Baroque anything and Romantic piano works
Reggae: Only love and ganja for me, no rise up/call to action type stuff
Cheeseball New Age: I have some old Shadowfax, and some Pure Moods mix CDs. It's ridiculous music, but I love it :lol:
Nature Recordings: Not really music, but where I live it's freezing and depressing six months out of the year, so I listen to a lot of nature sounds.
“World”: I like the stuff on Water Lily, Gaelic Storm, and plenty of other works.
Of course, I listen to things that aren't captured by the above list, but to stop this post from becoming a novel I'll leave it at that. On to the gear!
Stuff I have (mostly old/non-glamorous stuff)
Sources: HRT Music Streamer I, Apple iPod Touch 3rd Gen., Sony Vaio P Series (current production), Sony TC-W2 (cassette deck), Sony PS2, PS1 (my original from elementary school), Sony PCM-M10 (only used for recording purposes)
Amps: Sony STR-7055a (wood paneled 70s solid state monstrosity), Muse M15 EX (eBay TA2024 integrated)
Speakers: JBL L166 (3 ways from the 70s with egg-crate grills. I replaced the foam surrounds on the woofers a few summers ago), ALO Pandas (mini-monitor widebanders)
Headphones: AKG K272HD, Apple iBuds (they really put the “can” in cans).
Cables: I haven't tried anything fancy but I have an open mind :).
I realize that isn't too impressive, but my JBL system sounds warm and wonderful, with booty-licious bass that just won't quit, and the Pandas image like a champ. However, one of my wealthier friends has a Rega P2, a Benchmark DAC1 Pre, Sennheiser HD800s, a Decware Taboo, and Zu Soul Superflys. He feeds them with a boatload of XRCDs, SACDs, and 45 RPM vinyl. I've also heard B & W 800Ds and some excellent Dynaudio towers.
So...that's me in a nutshell! Glad to be on what looks like a wonderful board! I'll try to post a pic or two of my system in the next couple days when I have more time.
