There's a tradition here of thanking the bus driver (or buzz driver as they say in these parts) when you get off. I adopted it too, but never encountered it anywhere else I've been or lived. Not absolutely everyone doing it, anyway.
It seems to be a recent phenomenon - but a "thank you" costs nothing and the bus driver replies in kind. I do it now.

Very common here. Everyone thanks the bus driver. Been that way since I was a lad and probably before. The older generation did it and we learned it from them.

Thankfully I've not been on any form of UK public transport for about 15 years, and from what I'm reading here, I won't be starting again anytime soon!

I avoid mixing with the 'great unwashed' as much as possible, simply because when travelling somewhere, I enjoy having my own personal space [and bus routes going in and out of depressing looking housing estates, taking a long-cut for a shortcut and adding unnecessary miles onto the journey, frustrates me beyond belief], as well as being in control of the times that I travel, which is why for me the car is king!

Freedom to do what I want, when I want, is very important to me. However, I realise that for others, particularly those working in towns and city centres, there is little option but to use public transport. They have my sympathies.

Interesting to know it happens elsewhere. It isn't recent here, they were already doing it when I arrived in '87. But I rarely saw it in Liverpool or Nottingham.

Don't catch the bus much anymore. It is so expensive now a taxi is not much more. Less if you share. It can be entertaining though, you see some funny carry-ons sometimes.

Not that I'm on busses much and not been for long time now as I doubt I could get on one now, but it was customary to say thanks to driver. and the occasional reprimand if he was a shit driver

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Public transport is horrendous, so I don't use it. Must be 25 years since I had to. I dare say bus drivers say little to passengers, for fear of getting a clump. London is a lovely place (not).

    My pet hate is liars....

I can't understand why people lie...

I think most liars are sad people that have done nothing with their lives so they just make it up instead to 'fit in'...

I agree. Life is a lot less complicated for people who speak the truth. You don't have to keep rehashing stories. If in doubt say nothing, don't bullshit or cover up!!

I've actually taken to catching the bus more often as a cheap and convenient means of getting into town if I'm having a night out. It comes from the end of my street and drops me right in the town centre. Peak hours would be awful though but on a Friday or Saturday evening it's quite handy and reasonably cheap which of course means more beer and record money.
