You are forgiven and happy to be corrected except there is nothing in your post that actually explains what the problem is with the 'pay or f**k off' ultimatum. Unless you are saying that UK tax law is so complex no-one really knows what they 'should' be paying? I can appreciate that is an issue.

What I am suggesting is the UK closes these loopholes unilaterally by physically stopping business who exploit them from trading in the UK. I'm suggesting this as a principle btw, in practice I accept it would not be simple.

Company I work for does this. I asked one of the senior accountants about it since it seemed to me that they were being mugs, as well as potentially breaking the law that requires the company pursue the best outcome for its shareholders. His response was that the negative publicity resulting from being 'spotlit' as a tax avoiding multinational was considered to have more of an adverse impact on profits than just paying the full tax.

Sorry to 'offend' you. However, No-one's saying that the world isn't much more complicated than that. I was simply outlining what I'd do, were it possible.

It's just a light-hearted discussion, where some of us have 'vented spleen' about that which (or whom) annoys us in life, and not meant to be taken seriously

You're welcome to ask. Nope, since I left home at 25, and have been responsible for looking after myself, I've asked my parents for very little and largely supported myself. My wife was the same, and she left home in Wrexham (and went to work in London) long before I left home. Mind you, that was in the late 80s (we moved into our first house together in 1990), and property prices were very different then from now.

We were also fortunate that both of us had very caring and supportive parents, and fortunately ones who were in a position financially to help us out if we needed it (both of us were also only children), so I guess we drew some comfort from knowing that help was always there if we needed it, but we're both fiercely independent and driven people (what in some circles are referred to as 'achievers'), and so we were determined to stand on our own two feet!.
Thanks for that Marco. Sounds similar to us (well, apart from the 'fiercely independent and driven' bit). Buying property at the right time had a great deal to do with enabling us to make our way at about the same age, though I'd left home at 19 and moved down south. Both my sisters got some help from one of our aunts with the deposit on their first houses (and both of them still live in them), but by the time we got round to buying, my aunt had run out of money. (Itself a very thorny issue between my mother and her siblings, which led to an irreconcilable family split).

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

No worries, Joe. I think it always helps understand people better and gauge 'what they're about', as it were, when you know something of their background
