It's not about value for money; that's an entirely different concept. It's about Sound-Per-Pound Value, which is something quite different, and rather easier to pigeonhole. Like Rupert says, recommendations, in that respect, could be offered at various price points.
For example, which phono stage, recommended by the AoS community, offers the biggest 'bang for buck', at under £1000, or which cables do the same for under £100, or whatever. The important criterion is that it's not simply *your* favourite whatever, but stuff that is widely used and 'endorsed' by AoS members, as delivering high SPPV
